Yesterday I did a wedding for a couple of good friends of mine. It was the first time that I have been a guest and DJ at a wedding and I think it went really well.

I just wanted to report on something that I thought was a really good idea. The bride and groom got married at the actual venue and it was really nice. When we returned to the room where the wedding breakfast was going to be served (a BBQ) for champagne etc, the bride and groom went off to have their photos taken and I was given the job of running a quiz. The quiz was based around the bride and groom and was on music, geography, general knowledge and sport. It was devised by the groom and went down really well and loads of people commented on what a good idea it was.

It got everybody interracting with eachother on the tables as some people didn't know eachother and the whole atmosphere was excellent. It's something that I may suggest in my pre function meetings now as it killed time in the afternoon and got everyone interested.

The evening reception went really well with a great mix of Indie, Motown, 70s Disco and Ska but it all seemed to go far too quickly. There was also a couple of friends of ours who did some acoustic guitar songs and the groom also got everyone into the piano room where he played a couple of songs on the piano.

It was a long and tiring day but very enjoyable.

When my daughter got married, it was all done in the same venue, and it can be a big help. Glad to hear it was a good day, some useful ideas there.

There seems to be more hotels offering marriage ceromanies nowadays,so i can see your point of view it will all be over and done with quite quickly.

Do you have any regrets about perhaps not being able to relax and enjoy it more, as a regular guest? I often feel that way when I DJ for friends and family.

Conversely, I can't have as good a time if I'm NOT working, I keep trying to do the Disco from my seat. ;) :D :D

I actually really enjoyed the day mate and I also got a good idea as to how things work. What I mean by that is...Generally, when we turn up to do the evening reception, most of the people that have been there have been there all day and it takes a lot out of you. Personally speaking, I got in from my residency work at 3.30am on saturday morning and was up and at the wedding venue setting up for the evening at 10.00am. I put in a really nice set up and was away just before Midday and then home, showered and suited up and back at the venue with my missus for 1.00pm.

Most people, family and friends have a long day like that on the wedding day and when you aren't used to drinking wine, beer etc in the daytime, by 5.00pm you start feeling it. I had a couple of glasses of champagne and some traditional Irish Mead (lovely stuff...made from honey) and one beer. The bride and groom told me to enjoy myself and I had every intention of doing so but once I had eaten some of the BBQ food, I was stuffed and didn't feel like drinking. By 6.00pm in all honesty I was ready for my bed. I drank Diet Coke for the rest of the night as I felt dehydrated.

I think a lot of people feel like that when they are there all day and sometimes people leave early and I can see why. The quiz idea was an excellent idea because it got people playing in teams who maybe hadn't met before. I will definitely recommend it but I am not sure if I would offer to do it myself as it is would be a long day for me again but I suppose it depends on when they wanted it to start etc etc. My idea was to just mention it in the meetings and see what they think. I would suggest it and if they wanted to use the idea then fair enough, if they didn't like the idea then again, fair enough. If they thought it was a good idea and wanted me to do something for them then I would price it accordingly. If they wanted me to be there aswell and start early or something then same again.

I hope that makes sense.

Indeed Gary, some people don't realise how long the day is at some weddings, they may involve long travel for some, an early start, and then they are expected to boogie till 1am! :eek: I recently had a 1am finish booked, a flying start to the dancinfg at 7.30pm, and packing up at
11.30pm :eek: :D :D
It's always useful to get another perspective, such as that of a guest.

Too right! I have a 01.00am wedding coming up next weekend and I guess it could be like that. I do explain this in my meetings with the bride and groom.

When Jan and I get married in January it is a one venue job and we are looking forward to it immensely. I even intend to do some of the entertainment myself.

Yes of course. I shall put my own rig in and do some of the work myself and get some others to do some too. We also intend to have a line dancing session and a close friend is a barn/scottish dance caller and he has promised to do a couple of numbers.

I get married in september and the missus has banned me from the stage, lol
should be a good night though, i'm setting the kit up and having "open decks" as there will possibly be 11 DJ's there.
so who knows what will be playing next, i'm just going to let them get on with it
(all the DJ's i know and trust, and they have used my kit before when they help me out)

You should go one better next time...instead of being a wedding guest and the DJ, try being the best man & DJ.

That's what I did at my brother's wedding 8 years ago, although it turned out to be a complete waste of time...as he's been divorced for nearly 5 years!
