hiya members
what steps would i need to take to enable me to include music tracks on my website legally. i know copywrights will be needed, plus any added info would be helpful. look forward to your tips, comments etc. regards dave.

Dave as a rule of thumb I personally dont like music on websites , many clients surf at work and if a track starts blaring out ....... theyre in deep water

I f you feel you must put music on your site have a button so the client can start it if they wish to listen , not just an automatic play when the page opens. just something to think about

copyright wise alot of sites seem to have these aweful ringtone type sounding ones maybe the copyright is different I dont know?

Also many companies, like ourselves, operate "thin client" desktop terminals as opposed to PCs, where in simple terms, a centralised applications server sends keyboard, mouse and screen refreshes to the terminal session, which do not support audio. Personally I find websites with audio and embedded youtube presentations annoying, as my lipreading skills aren't particularly good. Just my 2p.

I couldn't agree more.

I read somewhere that the most annoying thing about disco websites is music playing automatically.

The minute this happens, people will click on the small cross on the top right of their screen in their masses.

My advice is to NOT have any music on your website.

That way, you'll put less people off, get more bookings & not need to worry about the copyright situation you mentioned.

If you want to include any popular/copyrighted music on your site, you will find the licence to do so prohibitively expensive, so I wouldn't bother if I was you.

Music on websites is tremendously annoying, and as Rob says, will make most people close the page without even considering anything else. I often listen to music and watch DVDs etc on my computer too, and I find I have to up the volume a bit for that. The trouble is though, that I forget I've turned the volume up, so if something in my browser starts playing sound, it tends to give me a bit of a fright - so rather than being annoyed, I am now angry!

...And finally, there is no such thing as a song that 100% of people love so you are immediately limiting the audience and appeal of your website with a gimmick that doesn't actually have anything to do with your offering (unless the song is by you, in which case it should be on your 'I'm a singer let me out of here' website).

I agree with everyone else. Music on websites is annoying and tacky.
