Equipment arrangement in flight cases

Judging from the pics in the gallery, it appears that most people have their hard drive controller or CD controller at the front of their flight case and the mixer behind it.

Is this just personal preference, or is it because if the controller was behind the mixer there wouldn't be enough room to get the various plugs into the back of the mixer?

I'm just curious, because I've always had the controller BEHIND the mixer, as I couldn't imagine having things the other way round...but I seem to be a bit of a rare breed in this.

I used to use a combi case with the CD controller at the top, then mixer and CD draws at the bottom.

I now use a 11u x 2u case, with from top to bottom, HC4500, mixer and then Denon HD2500.

You do get used to it Rob after a few weeks, if you decide to change what you are used to.

But as far as I know there's no need to change what I'm used to...unless of course there's a valid reason which had not occurred to me.

I know it might just be down to personal preference, but if there's a practical reason which I'd not considered, then of course I'll consider changing.

Hya Rob, for some reason with the D2 it just felt right like that, although I dont really have any choice as I also have the CD head unit in so dont have enough space to get the wires in as I use a flat top mixer case.

I suppose with most of the work done digital with more people now, having the main unit closer and near the keyboard seems to be a more comfortable combination.

Like I have said it wasn't really a choice as thats the only way it would fit as both my head units are 3u each so more luck than judgment, but for me personaly seems to be a comfortable way of working.

The only downside I have found though is you tend to watch the crowed lass as your not naturally looking forward the same and more concentrating on finding tracks i.e. tend to be looking at the mp3 mixer more than anything ells.
For the above reason I have been considering getting a new case, one that has the 3u head unit slant at the top but are roughly £140-£160 to buy so quite pricey for that benefit.

Its all down to whether I decide fully to sell the D2 and just stick to CD due to this licensing situation.
My own show isn't actually fully functional yet so although the licence isn't a huge amount, on the top of other things I still have to pay for like PLI, PAT, and now need a van or trailer, plus the few bits I still need to get, its going to be quite a task to cover all at this moment in time.

I could have no doubt done things a lot cheaper initially to get up and running sooner, but trying to be as professional as possible comes at a higher price than simply making do with the cheaper option, plus the fact I am a Virgo doesn't help as everything has to be just so and I would only end up beating me self up if the wrong choices were made (I'm my own worst critic).

IMHO it is much easier to operate a twin CD remote placed in front of the mixer, ideally with a 1U or 2U blanking panel to the very front to rest one's wrist on.

When a controller is placed behind the mixer, greater care is needed when operating the jog wheel and pitch bend buttons, so as not to accidentally move channel faders on the mixer, also quite simply, it's further to reach!

I would say about 80% of our DJs have the controller to the front, and to be honest, when I'm assembling a new twin CD & mixer into a rack for a DJ, I will always rack the CD remote to the front by default.

One of the reasons why I went for the MDF option was in in case I wanted a radical rearrangement after embarking on my learning curve. Ever impetouous, I'm considering a second control unit,and the big question is one box or two? Decisions, decisions!:confused:

Used to have my mixer above my d2 but found myself fiddling with the mixer far more than with the d2, and sleeves were forever catching the wheels on the d2 either inserting a bit of scratch or messing up my cue points :bang:

Took the case apart a few weeks back for PAT'ing and jiggled them around. Much better now!

So top to bottom I have a DMX master at the very top, then d2, then mixer.

Edit: The only time I use the D2 controls is when I press the play button to start each track, as I use the keyboard for all other functions.

Therefore, it makes sense to have the mixer at the bottom, as it is nearest to me, which seems like the right place for the piece of kit I'm using the most (faders, gain controls, eq etc).

I have me controller at the bottom of the rack as it's easier to see the screen, plus its easier to press the buttons and do any beat matching if needed.

I found I had problems the other way round. When I tried my HD 2500 above the mixer, my cufflinks or suit sleeves would catch on the faders and alter sound levels. I prefer to be more hands on the HD2500, so have that at the bottom.

i always had my cd controller at the back but then i had to put it at the front when got my bheringer mixing desk beacuse of plug in the top.

imo i it better at back, you don't cache buttons and so.

Surely a sloping case arrangement would lessen the accidental catching of buttons/wheels /faders, compared to some of the flatbeds shown? :confused:
