Question regarding when a DJ sells his equipment

Good morning ladies and gents of the dj fraternity today I have a 2 pronged question for you to consider.


1. If a DJ works from a digital playout system If he sells all of his CDs can he also sell the hard drives that he has ripped them to??

2. Would the buying DJ need a produb licence as technically he has not ripped the music himself he has bought the music in that format??

I think you can sell your hard drive with the ripped music and also your cds to go with them,
Sorry that it has come to you giving up Dave, When you decide to sell your equipment let me know what is going and I will definatley be interested.

Pretty sure Produb is only for changing format. If it is already in the format you use then see no reason to need it.
Produb as the name implies is a liscence to cover changing a song either in editing or by format. If you need neither service then the licencewould not apply.

1. I would say yes as long as it's to the same person.

2. I would think yes. Even though hey haven't copied the files themselves, they are still copies & without ProDub, they would be illegal to use. (I don't think MCPS would care about the fact that the original owner had a ProDub when he ripped them, as long as the new owner had one. It would be hard to tell where they came from, so being in posession of them would require the licence

But the licence is issued to an individual person, not a hard drive or a named list of tracks. I don't think they'd be happy with this suggestion.

Oh cripes, here we go again!
I guess I should read the Produb details again.
What I had in mind was the Produb is a license to convert an amount of music and that said music is then done and paid for end of story.
So in effect it is purley a license to "hold" an amount of converted music until such time as you no longer intend to use it in any professional capacity. Which i guess in lies the opportunity to sell it to a person that understands if they need to use it for professional discos they require the produb.

Thanks again ....... next question how the heck does one go about valueing such a comodity that has taken years to grow and months to rip lol??? it's my one main sticking point I don't want to be emotional about it ie. It's taken me ten years to build up the library I have etc.

i'm guessing it's one of the most valuable things i own and don't want to give it all away .

i'm guessing on the produb score a licence would be needed to use the ripped tracks for financial gain. Just sat in the living room boxing them all up and cleaning .... promo only and pro discs from 1999 to about prodisc 87 ...... no idea i had that many ......

Do you need to sell your music collection? What if in the future you need it or want to listen to something again. It must be the most valuable part of your set up and the hardest to value and to sell at the best price. Not to mention the time it takes to build it up.
I would monitor ebay for a while and see what things are going for with what you want for them in mind. There is someone selling 140+ vinyl 7" & 12"s for £99.

yep all needs to be sold .... as i need to pay off my loan if i give up .... thanks for the advice .... ive googled complete dj cd collection and to my horror found at least 5 saying "i've gone fully digital now so don't need my cds anymore so i'm selling them all" :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek:

I would assume that if Dave wished to make a copy of his HD to keep for PERSONAL use that would be OK, wouldn't it? :confused: Obviously he couldn't use it to gig with at a later date.

Wont they be misguided and misinformed DJs who dont realise unless they have originals they cant prove they are not using illegal copies?

Particularly important if they work in areas frequently policed by the regulators:eek: :eek: :eek:
