Back to School on monday! (as I'm a bit thick)

Hi All,

Well, for me it's back to school on monday but not you're normal school....I'm off to Dj Academy for a week down in Worcester :eek:

As some of you know I'm coming to the end of my time in the Army (joined in 1985) so as part of a reintergration to civy street I get a massive budget of wait for it...... £534 :eek: to spend on a course or training.

When I saw the resettlement officer he said so you're going to be a plumber, Nope, plasterer, Nope , truck driver, Nope. Well what then? I want to go to Dj academy. After I'd convinced him that the place actually exsited it was all agreed and I chatted with Andy at Dj Academy and the deal was done for a 5 day intensive one on one course at Bushwackers in Worcester (note for Tone it's not like Hooters :D )

The reason I'm doing it is because i've only ever been self taught or got info from this great forum ;)

After speaking to Andy on friday my tutor is Dj Tant and the week will revolve around what I want to learn and I'll also go out a gig or 2 with Dj Tant.

Sounds like a good week to me I'll keep you posted on how it goes ;)

Sounds great Paul. That's something I'd like to do but work and finances always seem to get in the way. Hope you thoroughly enjoy it! I guess most of us are self-taught. I've often thought of getting out to see how other people do it, but again, time, work, etc.,

Enjoy it and give us loads of feedback afterwards.

That's right opposite the Vue cinema.. not stayed in the hotel, but the pub/restuarant is good!

Andy's a sound guy, Not sure who DJ Tant is by the name, but I'm sure I know him by face. If it is, he usually brings some of the intensive course guys into HTFR to show them round if they've never been to a decent DJ shop, or had the chance to play with a lot of high end DJ gear.

End of day 2 at Dj school and it's going well. Am working on cdj1000's which are v nice. Can now beat mix! Learnt a lot even on the basics, set up kit etc.


Off to visit htfr in the morning and then will be "in the mix" for the afternoon. Will try not to spend too much.

Have got my exam on friday where I have to do a 30 min set perfectly beat matched and in key. It gets recorded and burnt to disc as my demo!

I'm sure saturdays wedding will aprieciate it.

Do you think beat mixing and perfect key mixing is as important as (a) choosing the right music at the right time and (b) interacting/entertaining - ie: microphone use, announcing, etc.,

I do some beat mixing and occasionally go as far as key mixing but when playing sets from the decades, unless mixing dance tracks, is the bpm and key that important to the type of gigs we do?

Not saying it's wrong - just asking the question.

Test day then today, should be fine. Been areal good week learning things that I didn't know.

Martin, I'm not saying beat matching is the be all and end all but adds another string to the bow. All good experience and part of the overall package.

Knowledge is power apparently!

Well, it's all over I passed my exam and can now officially beat mix :D

It was a really worthwhile week learning how the club dj's do it and it all helps to better myself.

One of the strangest things was having tracks that last 6/7 minutes and not just the radio edits.

Tanz, the tutor for the week was very onside and was prepared to listen to how the mobiles do things as afterall we all play for the same team just at at different grounds ;)

So all in all a good week turned out a little pricey with the visit to see Adam but hey ho nevermind.

They also do an 8 week nightschool course I think the locations are Worcester ,Birmingham and Woking. So if you can't give up a whole week then maybe worth trying that one.

They guys are going to BPM so go and have a chat with them.
