View Full Version : Frontage Advertising.

Advertising was raised in another topic.
Personally. I wouldn't advertise the disco on the front of the show.
I always have done. I think it is a very good idea.
What's everyone else's opinions on advertising at events?

We used to (a 14 x 8 inch detachable banner on the frontage), now it's just plain. I don't think it's made that much of a difference in all honesty as it was quite small & discrete.
I think big full frontage banners are OTT & would not really appeal to our client base. The same applies to signage on light screens etc.

My argument is that if it was good enough for the Beatles and Joe Loss then it's good enough for me. The right to do so is also enshrined in the SEDA contract.

I used a sign written front for years and people seemed to remember the logo.
I much prefer the star cloth booth now though.
Name of Disco (Like we do) or Logo Yes
Name, Number, Slogan, No.

At the end of the inspiring thread Rob asked me to explain why. Basically it creates public awareness of the disco's name so that if they want to book me at some stage in the future they will know who I am. This is different to someone who has an immediate need who will come up on the night and ask for a card.

Surely if someone likes what you do but has no immediate need, they will STILL come up on the night & ask for a card. I would.
I sometimes get bookings from people who took a card several YEARS earlier, but haven't needed a disco until now.
When I first joined this forum, I'd been considering some kind of sign or banner, but couldn't decide whether it was a good idea, so I started a thread asking for advice.
The majority of replies convinced me they are not a good idea, as they're too in your face, and a plain black surround (or even a starcloth) with no signs or banners looks much more classy & professional.
Also, if a business was successful, surely they wouldn't NEED to plaster their details all over the front of their kit.

Names on the front, no probs chaps and chapesses. Contact numbers, no.

Nothing wrong with a subtle logo or company name IMHO but emblazoning the front of a rig with contact details and marketing guff - nope. Not for me.
All I have advertising the company is a series of short video sequences showing our logo in various slow-moving animated forms. These are shown on a loop during guest arrivals, occasionally during the buffet etc. and then for a few minutes during any smoochies near the end of the night. They are extremely subtle and many people have asked me where I had them done.

I can think of nothing more tacky than having some form of advertising across the front of my set up.
But then I can think of nothing worse than handing out request cards, leaving cards/branded pens on tables, projecting a company logo etc. etc.
Why not go the whole hog and send the audience some junk mail and get an automated dialling system to ring them at home at a ridiculous time of the night telling them they will win a holiday to Florida if they book your services?
Basically all these types of advertising are pointless and tacky in my opinion. If you are good enough you will be remembered and asked for, end of.
Save your money and focus on the little details and the quality of your performance. That will bring you more business than a branded frontage or pen will ever do.

Sorry Rob but that is absolute piffle. Does every punter in the room at every gig you do come and ask for a card? Mine dont. Not everyone when they are at a function knows that they are going to need a disco in 6 months time say.
I agree with others about not putting up phone numbers or website addresses. Just the name will do. As I said most bands will have the name on music stands or bass drum etc.
On the subject of why a succeful business would need to "plaster their name all over their kit" I think nearly all shops have their name above the front window, most companies have their name on their vans, many other companies have their name on equipment. Why not us. Of course if the dj wishes to remain anonymous then that is a business choice. There have been some gigs I have done in the past where because it is a themed evening or because I am working for another company etc I have asked to remove name boards etc. I have had no problem doing that either.

Can you honestly not think of ANYTHING worse? Surely farting down the Microphone would be a touch worse? :p
There's nothing wrong with Marketing....in an idealistic world, every gig would be a queue of punters demanding business cards and each gig would lead to 7 others, but it doesn't happen.
Like I said earlier...I don't think there is anything wrong or unclassy about a professionally made/professional looking name sign or logo, for people to remember you by...an all black front, though classier, doesn't exacly stick in the memory...

tricky one this!
for getting noticed, getting your name remembered and more bookings etc its an obvious great idea - its there in everybodys view etc and cant really be missed.
however, its a fine line between advertising and advertising at an event.
i think if you were resident at a pub or venue, then it could (within reason) be ok as you are not doing a night for someone in particular, and therefore can use the night for a bit of self promotion.
it becomes a matter of taste for advertising at peoples events - birthdays / weddings etc. undoubted benefits for advertising etc, but the plain or starcloth looks much more classy.
we have our band name on the bass drum in the band, as most bands do, but thats more for 'we are ... come and watch us again next time we're here' than to get bookings...
ive been toying with the idea for months now of getting a banner done, so will be interesting to get the general consensus.
in this modern day what about a small tidy logo and just an email address? rather than phone numbers etc?
im in two minds myself on this one!

The only sign written material I use is polo T-shirts with the company name on the back and then the Dj's name on the front so at least when you go to the venue reception the staff know who you are and it keeps it professional, On the back of the van I just have the wesite address underneath the number plate and that's it. I don't see the point in over the top advertising as it will only drive custom away rather than attract it.

No it isnt. All towns and villages have signs to let you know where you are. Others have advertising signs inviting people to come and live, work, invest, holiday etc. When you buy a chocolate bar it has its name on the wrapper. That is not advertising - it is branding. A Billboard poster for the same chocolate bar is advertising.
Anyway I have had a name board or illuminated name on my disco for over 40 years now; so whether you think it is cheesy, tacky, bad taste or not good business practice I feel I am unlikely to change.

Your talking about a different issue...dressing appropriately for the occasion wasn't my point, it was how you choose to advertise your business...if a name on the front of a disco is stupid and tacky...whats so different about having the same thing on the t-shirt you are wearing...If your catering for a black tie event, surely your company TShirts are MORE inappropriate than my company name being on the front of my disco....

I personaly like the free advertising that my frontage would give, and is about standing out when people walk in the room.

i have an electronic scrolling message board - and at almost every gig people are impressed with it - ideal for that personal touch 'happy birthday mrs x all the best for the future etc' people really enjoy that. plus you can change messages left right and centre - and it immediately breaks the ice between dj and crowd 'any requests please come and ask' (saves saying it repeatedly over the mic) and yes, you can discreetly advertise every now and again on it, whether it be name, number or email address - no harm done there - definitely keep it in my opinion, certainly works for me. and if the occasion is more upmarket you just dont advertise on it, rather than have to swap starcloth etc.
i do like karl-d's banner/cover though. thats probably the ideal comprise between advertising and discretion.

Having read back over seven pages of posts, I really can't believe just how heated such a trivial debate could get!
Personally, I don't have name boards or logos on my rigs (I have just about everywhere else!) but I certainly wouldn't think anything less of a fellow DJ for doing that let alone post any derogatory comments such as "tacky" or "cheap". This is showing great disrespect of others just for doing things a different way.
I can't help but feel that part of this thread (not all - there's been some constructive comments) has just been a clash of some diva-esque egos as opposed to really helpful comments and opinions. It's becoming more like a Jerry Springer show than a helpful forum. I'm just glad this isn't being debated in the flesh - I don't think the ambulance service could cope with the casualties! :D :D

completely horses for courses ..... i have used message boards , banners and front boards and now use nothing .......... which works best .............
none of the above , no bad comments about any of them from punters ever?? and yes quite a few good on each ????
If people are impressed with what you do they will find a way to contact you , i still get calls from promo pens and keyrings i put out 3 or so years ago and the day after my last "unbranded " gig i got an enquiry from a guest who had asked the organiser for my details.
one mans tacky is another mans cool one mans chooon is another mans cheese and so on and so forth
if guys like theo have been around for decades (sorry theo) with boards light boxes or whatever else someone wants to slate then it is obviously not the despicable crime against ones business accumin and humanity in general that it is often made out to be and if i started a business and someone said buy this bit of plastic and you'll still be here in 30 odd years being successful ............. i'd buy 2 !!!
as i said ive noticed no difference in any of my approaches , if you are good people find a way to contact you.

I agree too.
Especially where private parties are concerned, if any members of the audience are looking for a disco and they like yours, they will know the host anyhow so contact details are easy to come by.
I don't advertise at gigs in any way - all I have are a few business cards available should anyone want one. Personally I think having the disco's name at the front a bit tacky these days, but I don't really know what the public think about it.

I think it's a bit tacky these days, but to be honest I had the front of my stand sign written for nearly 20 years and it got me plenty of work as people knew the name of the company and the logo.
I changed the logo recently, but pre-internet, had quite a few people tell me they found me by seeing the logo on my ad in the Yellow Pages. Of course that was quite a while ago....
So, it had to happen eventually, but I'm on the fence with this one. :D

Debating, however heated, is itself helpful...Differences of opinion are what push things forward...Threads on here would be mighty dull if everybody just agreed with the first post. What matters is that either one side of the debate wins and changes his or her opponents opinion or each party agrees to disagree. :)
Anyway...as I said waaaaay back...
Name or Logo on Front - Yes
Name, Website, Phone Number - No.

I totally agree with your comments and I wasn't suggesting that debating a subject is wrong. I've been part of several debates - some very heated - on here. It's when comments start to get personal and derogatory (ie "cheap" and "tacky") that I feel we should take a step back and think about what we're saying.
I just think some comments are borderline on being personal and that is against Rule 12 of the Forum Rules.
Just my opinion, mind! ;)

If your catering for a black tie event, surely your company TShirts are MORE inappropriate than my company name being on the front of my disco....
Not if they're only worn while setting up & taking down.
Back to Theo's illuminated box sign & the band name comparison. I don't ever recall seeing a band with a light screen with their name on.
