Have i made a big mistake?

Hi all,

Having been on the forum a little while now i'm starting to think i've made a mistake in my choice of active speakers. I have read lots of posts and looked at lots of pictures in the gallery and the way forward definitely seems Mackie srm 450's. I,however, bought the JBL EON 15 G2's and although they produce a good sound and i'm happy with them, I cant help but think I should have got the Mackie's. Even the guy in djkit suggested them as an alternative and slightly cheaper, but I had eyes only for the JBL's.
So what do you think? Have i made a huge mistake? Your advice would be appreciated, cheers :beer1:

I have Mackie 450's and i love them and they do the Job for me..I also had Mackie Sa1532's and love them even more but Im sure there is something always better...

Iwas thinking of adding some subs (active) to my eon's for some more bass, do you know much about the JBL JRX 118 SP range? If not any suggestions are more than welcome!:D

Many active sub users on here favour the Db range. As a passive kind of guy, I personally have no idea. :D

I wasn't going to, until Beerfunk started praising them to the hilt! ;) Like I said, if it works for you, then it's fine. I might point out that in my
( admittedly very humble) opinion, I'd choose Cortex1000 over Denon2500 every time, simply because of the ease of use. I think I'm in a minority of two, but so far, my punters have been impressed beyond belief by it. It works for me, so end of story.

The Mackies are exceptional, but they are not the best. I doubt you'll get a better sound for the same money, and I've yet to hear a Class D setup to fully convince me.

I agree, but that's easily solved by using the eq to pull down the high frequencies & boost the lower ones...that's what I do.

Played 3 hours of Prodigy, Leftfield, Banco da Gaia mixes, Orbital, Underworld, Chemical Brothers etc. etc. between 1 and 4am at a wedding on Saturday.

Its the first time I have been specifically complimented on the quality of my sound system by customers and it suddenly reminded me why I chose my Mackie system in the first place -> 450's over 1501's

Not a sign of 'tinniness' anywhere. :p

Reminisce, please take this in the spirit it is posted - learn to setup/eq your speakers properly and it will ensure your sound quality is at peak for each venue you visit. I'm sure you will then be reassured of the sound of your JBLs.

I only eq through my mixer in order to get the balance right.
Nothing artificial about setting your speakers up according to the type/layout of the venue.

Have added the tongue in cheek icon - wasn't trying to make a point, honest.

Most times for my Class-D's the EQ is set dead flat. I rarely need to boost or cut anything.

Interstingly at the NADJ show, the vast majority agreed that the Shermann speakers sound by far the best during demonstration.

Now apart from the fact that the components and build are very high quality indeed, theirs was the only system in the 'loud' hall that was properly equalised.

Should the opinion on the sound of the Shermanns be downgraded because they were EQ'd or did it just help to show the full capability of the speaker system?

(I am personally in favour of EQ'ing to get the best sound as when evaluating I work on the basis of an old northern saying - you can't polish a terd) (spelling intentional)

If you use Shermanns flat, they are all bass, distinct lack of top in my experience, which has been live in a disco situation, not in competition with several other systems - but it is only MY opinion. You can go on about bleeding Mackies from here to eternity, they still make my fillings hurt!.

It's your cross fade Dave, If not you want to try using the rotary faders :D

So, do you not notice a difference in sound from venue to venue?

eg. marquee, high ceiling polished floors with no curtains, low ceiling with carpets and curtains etc.

I feel like I have lack of bass in my sub but I run this flat.Anyway, there are two ways I was thinking of going around this. 1) Get a 31 band EQ and use a test tone CD and do this at every gig to get the best sound for the room you are working in but this can take quite a while to get this all setup correctly - http://www.studiospares.com/Test-Gear/CD2-AnalysCheck/invt/4045302) This was is the more expensive way but I think It could be better. I know this is way to for a DJ but hey. lolYou could get a rackmount analyzer and use a measurement mic to setup up the speakers at every gig. The behringer one for example has an EQ and Analyzer built in one so you just need to play some test tones to get it setup (i think).

Can I stick my oar in here, ive run both. I got rid of my jbl's because i found them very harsh and thought the mackies had a much warmer sound. but sound is very much a personal thing, you should stick with whatever you are happiest with.

Ive had Mackie SRM450s and tbh. I didnt like them. The speakers getting hot!! and the sound quality i didnt like that much either.

I sold the mackies for some good active speakers..... RCF ART Series!!!

The RCF ARTs i run now run extremely cool all night long without breaking into a sweat. Not only that... they sound smoother than mackie too.

Well its gonna be expensive if you have made a mistake to trade them in for the others.
I would stick with them and take more care next time when buying. A good shop will allow you to hear different speakers before buying them.

I did look at the eon speakers myself but thought the sound was very similar and the mackie's looked nicer. Mind you the carpet covered peaveys still look the best out of all of them :)

It's quite a long story involving 7-8 Mackie subs, great Mackie service, lots of bad luck, lots of patience by me, then crap service and a very wrong assumption from Mackie service and eventually Mackie really :Censored: things up and costing me a lot of money by their incorrect assumption and finger pointing.
