I'm having to transfer a lot of money about at the weekend and my bank is going to have to charge me for doing it - £20 for a bank draft....
What a con..... ....I've got to pay my bank for the privilege of moving 'my money' about......
I've spoke to them...but it like talking to a brick wall......:bang: :bang:
Even though we have 3 accounts with them and have been banking with them for 10yrs plus.........i'm so :Censored: mad......
Well that's just not cricket.....I feel a stroppy letter brewing.....
Any tips Rob. :)

My advice would be to change bank/Building society... I listen to Martin Lewis alot these days and he says that staying loyal with your bank means nothing these days.
I closed down my Abbey account after 20 years of banking with them as they were rubbish and were quick enough to charge loyal customers for everything. I now bank with the Natwest and have had no problems so far.
Im guessing you bank with the Abbey????

Tony,
I'd need a bit more information to be able to offer any advice.
Why do you need a bank draft?
Presumably it's to give to someone to pay for something quite expensive, which is why I'm guessing cash is either inconvenient or not safe.
I must admit that £20 seems a bit steep for a bank draft. If I remember rightly, my bank used to charge half that...although I guess it might have gone up a bit in the four years since I left.
A word of warning...probably the biggest bit of mis-information about our banking system is people thinking a bank draft is as good as cash, which it's NOT. It's simply a guaranteed cheque (as it was paid for in advance), so it still has to clear through the account when paid in, just like any other cheque...so it's no different to a postal order, really...although usually for larger amounts, of course!

in your shoes i would certainly change banks and let them know why with a letter to there head office.i am thinking of changing banks myself the hsbc i belong to have just modernised(if that is the right word) and become an express bank. it is terrible in there it don't look like a bank, it don't feel like a bank just a load of cash machines standing against the wall.

I'm sure there are good points and bad points with any bank or building society. I've heard bad stories about HSBC, Barclays, TSB and Abbey (who I'm with) from my family and friends.
Are there any good honest banks around anymore - my guess is NO!

Anyway....update: The company who now have my hard earnt cash have given me back £20 in beer tokens at the pleasure park.....which I thought was really nice....so I've invited that person who made the gesture to join me for a beer or two.
I decided not to invite the bank manager......

I bank with the Nationwide and it's not a bad service. Had one or two problems but nothing that rearranging my Direct Debits couldn't sort.
Super avatar, Tone! Are you really a "stupid boy"? Shouldn't say that or you might "tell mum"! :D :D :D

The general rule is that if you need to avoid cheques and want to pay someone a large amount quickly, you'll have to paya charge...either for a bank draft (guaranteed cheque) or a CHAPS payment (bank to bank transfer).
It it's not quite so urgent, there are ways to do it free.
For example, I could use my online banking set up a standing order to someone, and then cancel it after the first payment had gone. However, it could take about 5 days from when you set up the standing order until the payment arrived the other end.

Fortunately not...although to be honest, even if my bank DID go down it would have little effect...as I only put in enough to cover my regular payments.

Not me.
When I want prudent accounting advice, I go to MYSELF!
