would you beleive it there i was sat night doing a 30th birthday party all was well music going down a treat and i had a lovley warm fuzzy feeling then i was asked to play .....sat night all of a sudden i thought that does not sound as it should and imediatly changed the track with out the party really knowing what had happend. my left hand speaker had decided to spit its dummy out
i have since listend to it at home and its now time to enter the minefield of the speaker world and having read all the post regarding which ones to get all i can say is it is a minefield. i have set a budget of £900 for which i would like some all singing all dancing speakers consisting of 2 subs and 2 15" top speakers.
now this is all my fault as i used false econemy by buying cheep in the first place i originally bought some very good sounding class d sp15's problem was they was to big to carry round so i bought some basic speakers that i could easily travel with
that was my downfall so now is the time to put things right and sort this out sorry to go on i guess i am just mad at my self.
any recomendations would be very much aprecieated i know this has been done to death
i do karaoke and disco and never play to more than 150 with 80ish max on the dance floor i have had a good look round but you cant beat real advice from those who really know.

I don't want to start the Class D debate again, but Class D are budget speakers. What on earth did you buy that were cheaper than that?

With one amp £720, with two, just over £1000. I'd prefer the Class-D, but I'd use this happily. If anything else comes to mind, I'll post it.

Links, explanations and costing please. :bang: :bang:
Edit: I'd recommend 15" subs. I'd prefer18" personally, but for the original request, I'd say15"

No I've just heard them a couple of times and read a lot about them , I am convinced pound for pound they are the best buy.
I need to get rid of 4 pairs of other speakers before I buy some though :D
If they go together (need to check on that)I will get a pair of 12" Sin bins to go with them.

Ok I assume you want powered I would recomend:
2 opera 415 bi amped tops. These are 15inch tops with 450 watt sub amp and 75 watt high band amp. I say 2 of these for £550 . I had a listen and they are very nice rounded sound and only weigh 20kilos each which is very good.
Match that with a DB sub 15 and you would have a system for most venue's and occasions. I use the single sub setup with 2 tops and have never been found wanting for bass or top end. I have used this setup in rooms with up to 400 people in without even taking them to maximum power.
You can pick one up for £479 each and you do only need one.
Whole package is just over your budget but I would be very surprised if you couldnt get a deal on the lot for £900 if you ask.
Oh worth mentioning the DB range is well covered by the DB technical staff. I broke my sub once (user error) and they had it fixed same day!

I have no knowledge of these, and am not disagreeing much with your suggestion, but would make two points.
It is often felt that for Karaoke, 12" tops are preferable. While I rarely do karaoke, I also hold this view.
An active system like this does not allow as much control over crossover points. ( If it does, then I withdraw that point. )

Yes well in budget with enough left over for subs, do you really think I would have suggested them if they were not
I may be wrong but I am presuming after reading the post the chap has at least one amp already.
I think it's good for people to ask advice, could stop them making a costly mistake, but I think they should do their own research on prices & supplier and if it is really what you are looking for etc, anyway that's part of the fun, doesn't hurt to ask if anyone has found it cheaper though, once you have made your choice :)

The sub and tops both have active crossovers so you can have a choice of crossover frequency. The sub has a low pass filter for tops or straight through signal. You can choose either 80, 100 or 120hz for crossover. Or the tops have and adjustable input filter with eq for adjustment.
As they were designed to work together as a set I think we can assume the preset crossover points are recomended by them.

see i said it was a minefield but i have to say a massive thanks to you all for your replys.
i like the class -d as i have experience with them and the sound was awesome SP15( just a pity about the size) but i have them on ebay now
its just a metter of making the right choice now as my experience in this is limited only been doing this for 18 months. also the amp i have at the moment is a Kam kxr 1500 so if i was to get a cross over then i would only need another smaller amp which means i can spend more on the speakers.
but i need to do this soon as i have this weekend off then its non stop untill after christmas.

Not sure about the sub mentioned, but the crossover in my sub has a switch for 80, 100 and 120 hz, as well as running high pass or just balanced out. I would have thought that would be enough for most users?

I too have the Kam. I'd recommend C-Mark as better. I'd get the same size amp, as you can lower the output from the crossover to lower the volume. The price difference on amp size is usually too small for big savings. Ask away mate, you'll get plenty of advice. :D

Thanks for that Darren. As a passive kind of guy, I didn't know that. I reckon it probably would be fine for most. An active crossover gives continuously variable points, which I like.

I'm kind of worried it hasn't yet been mentioned but JBL is another option.
Started using them a few years back and have never looked back. Great sound, really good build quality and made to last. Not yet had one problem with them and i plan to buy more.

Excalibur I'm not sure what you are trying to do by keeping on trying to prove you are right, I think you are dropping yourself more in the doo doo.
£575 a pair www.dolphinmusic.co.uk
Chap already said he made a big mistake originally buying some big old heavy class D speakers and it was a waste of money.
I think it's far better to have a lighter more compact set up if you can it's easier to handle and less chance of doing your back in.
These 12" passive speakers will out perform many 15"
and it was just a suggestion not an order, considering his previous mistake.
I don't think my original post deserved 2 or 3 replies from you trying to justify yourself, I think you should drop it now, I've made my recommendation it's up to Daz what he buys :)

Darren it's not me getting prices confused I don't think actives were ever in the equation, Excalibur twice dissected my posting adding sniping comments I dislike this, postings should be read as a whole, not in little bits with sniping comments in between, also I hate the head banging against the wall when commenting on other posters opinions, I find it so condescending.

Why do I get into so many fights on here?
Right, let's make some things clear. Diamond, I never snipe at people. If you thought that, then I totally, unreservedly and publicly apologise to you, no probs. All I asked for was that you gave costings for your advice, so that we could see if it met the criteria specified by Daz. I was using prices I'd found for passives, at £7-800! That's why I didn't reckon it was in budget. At £575 for passives, £200-£250 for subs yes it's in budget, but only one amp, so no backup at all. Workable, but not ideal.
For the record, Daz liked his Class-D's, they were just too big. I have the same ones, and I lose count of how many times I've warned folk just how big they are!
I am happy to give anyone advice when I have knowledge to share, and I always try to make sure that the advice I give meets the requirements of the OP.
Diamond, I have no axe to grind with you, I simply wanted you to show how your suggestions met Daz's requirements, as I would have asked anyone to do. There's no point in telling someone that a Rolls Royce is a great car if he can only afford a Skoda! ;) :D
Let's see what Daz ends up with eh? Anyone want a bet that he's driving round the East Midlands tomorrow morning? ;) ;) :D :D
