Close to disaster!

Tonight's disco was a wedding at a local Hilton hotel where I often work.

When they were ready for the first dance, I dumped my pre-made playlist containing all their requests into the crate, and loaded the first dance to the player.

About one minute before the first dance was due, I happened to glance at their request sheet on the table behind me, and noticed the first dance was Shania Twain's "You're still the one" BUT the song I'd put into the playlist & loaded to the player was "From this moment on"

Being digital, it only took 10 seconds to find & load the correct song, but if I hadn't looked at their request sheet when I did, I'd have played the wrong song for their first dance...something I've NEVER done before.

Have any of you come close to making a serious mistake at a gig, but luckily noticed it just in time?

Last year I played the wrong Louis Armstrong track off a CD given to me by the B and G for the first dance--however within seconds the floor was crammed with appreciative relatives and frIends who thought it was a brilliant choice:D :D :D --- ending with a round of applause.

I played the correct track straight afterwards to even more applause--and a smile from the B and G;)

Good way to start a Wedding:)

i lined up the 'timewarp' once when 4 or 5 women in their 50s and 60s were dancing, only it wasnt filed as 'timewarp' it was filed as 'the rocky horror picture show', anywho at the last minute i checked it out and id loaded 'sweet transvestite from transylvania' from the rocky horror picture show, not the timewarp!

luckily managed to whip it off and replace with something more suitable, thus avoiding calling the dancefloor a bunch of transvestites!

its always good when you make a mistake to have that 'theres nothing wrong here, i know what im doing' look on your face, when really deep down youre thinking 'aaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggg!!!!'. :)

Well, without re-starting another debate, I always listen to the next track in the headphones. Fortunately, the few times that I've been rushed, and have been forced to slam it on without listening first, I've got lucky :)

And then comes the decision whether to cut it short and let everyone know it was a genuine mistake, or let it run it's course - or even mention it as a special request for... 'Gary' (or whoever) over the mic :D

It doesn't have to be about playing the wrong track...this thread is about ANY near disasters people have had at gigs, but noticed & corrected at the last minute.

However, as you mentioned it, and this will probably make you cringe, but I've now done 11 digital gigs...and haven't used my headphones once!

No I didn't, apart from on a few tracks with a quiet beginning which needed chopping off...none of which I've played since going digital.

I noticed on a Website that the expression " New Country Music" is being suggested as an alternative genre to " Country and Western"

I think thats where Shania Twain probably fits in---as Steve says not true "Country and Western" ---playing cross over music like--

Man I feel like a woman--From this moment etc.

I consider people like Garth Brooks to be similar--its music that would have been American Mainstream pop but for the Cowboy Hats and steel guitars:D :D :D

New Country is the tag applied to all the C&W tunes it's not hip to admit to liking. ;) :D New Country can encompass Rock & Roll, Pop, C&W, and Rock. ;) :D

Not totally as I see it---but certainly an excuse for live musicians who say they are Country and then end up playing Rock n Roll and Pop because the audience get tired of the Country genre --which a live Country duo assure me happens frequently

Just because an artist is a Country artist, doesn't mean everything they record is Country, it's like saying Tom Jones is an Indie artist because he recorded some tracks with the Cardigans, Space & Cerys Matthews.

No, I was merely making the point that it doesn't matter what WE think of a track.

If the client asks for it it, we play it (assuming we're professional)...even if it happens to be our most hated track of all time.

I've made numerous mistakes over the years and got round or over them and had even more near misses. It's what makes life exciting. Most of the time I dont use my headphones because I know the tracks. On ones which need starting not at the beginning I generally make a note on the sleeve of the timing. I really only use the headphones for tracks that I am not familiar with.
As for New Country it is my favourite music. It is pop/rock music with proper lyrics and a tune played by musicians who can actually perform it in live on real instruments. Favouties are Keith Urban and Sara Evans.

My all time classic was lining up Grease mega mix to play at a kids party, which was track 2, but somehow mnaged to knock the cd player and the track that played was track 1 - Gary Glitter, Leader of the gang - Here's one for all the kids indeed!!
