Not only do I have the option to play CDs, but I carry 4 players to play them on!

I carry my old CD console containing a dual player (and all my CDs) for back up, but also carry a table top player which can be plugged into the spare channel on my digital console, and my digital console also has a single CD player built in.

It's not quite as good as the Vectis Vibe back up system, but it's good enough for me!

Edit: I'm not surprised by the survey results so far, which show that around 95% of digital DJs either already have or plan to have the option to play CDs...which makes complete sense to me.

Tony,

Why not just get one of those walkman CD players & stick in a couple of Duracells? You wouldn't even have to connect it to your mixer unless it was needed & it would take up virtually no space in a bag or box.

Surely it's worth it when you can pick up a brand new one on a certain auction site for less than £15 including postage?

I'm arguing the point because I don't believe it's feasible to use a ghetto blaster in the event of a power cut.

Everyone dancing in the pitch black to a CD played at sufficient volume on a ghetto blaster which you've placed on the floor in front of the disco?

However, I'm willing to be proved wrong, so I'm happy to hear from people who take ghetto blasters to gigs, have used them in the event of a power cut & have found them to be adequate.

You are not going to create the same sort of atmosphere but it at least gives you some background whilst you are waiting/hoping for the power to come back on and in the case of most venues it will not be pitch black because they have emergency lighting and/or candles.

A battery-powered ghetto blaster + AUX input + UPS covering d2, mixer and an ImpossibLED should give you at least an hour which will cover most power cuts.

About 90 minutes

Not sure the UPS was fully charged either... it's not been used for about 3 weeks so could be slightly depleted.

So, ImpossibLED + Mixer + d2 ought to get at least 30-40 minutes out of it. Minor wiring change. Sorted

probably 5 or more times- 2 elvis impersonators, 1 bollywood dance group and several brides and grooms who have brought a "special" cd on spec.

for the performers who I did not know I was performing with/they would be using my equipment that would be a lot of inconvenience and expense for the bride and groom that i avoided by having a cd player.

these clients all expected me to have a cd player and therefore i pre-empted this by having one.
one even expected me to have a radio mic, which i didnt.
i just had very long dmx leads.

I just can't see it.

However, I'm willing to be proved wrong, so I'm happy to hear from people who take ghetto blasters to gigs, have used them in the event of a power cut & have found them to be adequate.Having experienced a power cut during my very first wedding Rob, I must say that anything is better than no music.

Fortunately for me, the hotel had an emergency backup, which allowed my CD decks and amp to power up, but not my mixer. Some of the lighting was on around the room too, so the power cut really didn't ruin the night at all - luckily.

Now, in the event of a complete power cut, a ghetto blaster and a stock of candles (which hopefully the venue would have, you'd imagine so) would work wonders in any case. Remember, people will appreciate the situation, and will accept that the volume is limited, and that there are no flashing lights. You'll also find that a large number of people will go outside to look around the rest of the street, and to talk and have a laugh about it. So that means your volume requirement will drop a fair bit too.

I haven't invested in a battery operated ghetto blaster as a consequence of that night, although it is something I really should have done by now :o

Backup equipment crops up in discussion regularly here, with some DJs having backups for the backups for the backups :D In my experience, a power cut during a disco is probably just as likely as one of the essential components failing - yet (as far as I know) Theo is the only one to have a backup for the most essential component of them all - power! :)

In my experience, it's far more likely for an essential component to fail.

Unless I'm losing my memory, I've never had a power cut at any of my gigs, although I've had a number of occasions when a piece of equipment failed.

Not quite true (see below)

The music is still playing, but no-one can hear it!

True, but (especially in the case of power temporarily cut off by poorly set sound limiters) when the power returns, the music will instantly be heard without you having to do anything as soon as the amp comes back.

In other words, no waiting for any re-booting or re-cuing...and no need to physically do anything.

I have a simple policy. "The show must go on...unless there's a power cut or a flood where I have to carry the gear over picnic tables like Darren did"

In reality, I've never had a power cut in 25 years, so it's unlikely there will be one in the remaining few years before I retire. Also, my terms & conditions have something about this stating that we are not liable for any loss of performance if anything like this happens.

At the end of the day, it's a bit like deciding how much back up equipment to carry. You have to draw the line somewhere & I'm sure most people do NOT carry two full sets of gear to all gigs. Your decision is based on common sense, what has happened in the past and the probability of what you think is likely to happen in the future.

If other people DO think the show must always go on, surely they all carry a generator with them...as this IS adqequate for using in power cuts, whereas as ghetto blaster (in my opinion) is NOT.

After all, with a generator you can play at normal volumes through your normal gear & all your lighting will still be going.

Corabar Steve
23-09-2008, 08:16 AM
It all depends on the ghetto blaster. Mine held up well in the open air to a (as mentioned in the post above that you ignored). Plenty of them are of sufficient volume to cover the dance floor area at most small to medium functions.

Fair enough, Steve...so we have one person on the forum who's found a ghetto blaster to be MORE than adequate on ONE occasion.

Anyone else?

(I won't hold my breath!)

Edit: Steve, I'd be very interested to know the output power of the ghetto blaster you used.

I have no idea (it's old & I don't know where the spec sheet is), but the sound is crystal clear & if you stand infront of it when it's going full throttle you get an effect similar to the old Maxell ads with Pete Murphy.

In other words it's :Censored: loud & more than adequate to cover most small to medium dancefloors.

If mine is, then there must be others (unless I own the loudest ghetto blaster in the world) so it is wrong to dismiss them all out of hand.

Nobody else thought of doing it, because they all shared your blinkered opinions as to the performance capabilities of a ghetto blaster?

Or possibly because they have the common sense to know that 99.99% of the time a ghetto blaster is NOT adequate to use as back up.

Even Beerfunk agreed with me on that one...and he's hardly my biggest fan!

Well, in Steve's case, by his own admission it was MORE than adequate for around 100 people.

I do plenty of gigs with no more than 100 people, so maybe I should consider replacing my console, amp & speakers with a ghetto blaster for those gigs.

It would make loading the van & carrying in the gear an absolute doddle, and would also reduce my set-up time from an hour to around ten or fifteen minutes!

:DI agreed that they are not adequate under normal circumstances, I can't say I've heard one loud enough - although I'm sure it's possible. The point I was making is that you would choose to have no music, and a complete disaster of a night, and I would (ideally) choose to have some form of battery operated backup to get through the rest of the night.

And who said I'm not your biggest fan, Rob? I put you right up there with Charlie Chaplin :D

I agreed that they are not adequate under normal circumstances.

Are you sure about that?

Here is the main part of your post:

OK, a ghetto blaster is not ideal, or adequate, I think we'd all agree on that.

Nothing there about under normal circumstances, unless my newly lasered eyes are failing again already!

As for us all agreeing on that, Steve clearly doesn't!

The point I was making is that you would choose to have no music, and a complete disaster of a night

Correct...along with about 99% of all other DJs!

However, in reality the chances of this happening are probably lower than the chances of me winning the lottery!

I've never had a power cut since I started running mobile discos...which was when you were one year old!

and I would (ideally) choose to have some form of battery operated backup to get through the rest of the night.

So ideally you WOULD choose to have some battery operated, but in reality you DON'T. Is that the case?

And who said I'm not your biggest fan, Rob?

I said you're not my biggest fan...because as far as I'm aware it's true!

There you go again, pulling percentages out of thin air when you have no facts to back them up.

How did you arrive at that number?

How did you arrive at that number?

You don't NEED facts to make a guess at something, which is what I was doing...otherwise it wouldn't be a guess!

My guess was based partly on my experience of the DJs I've seen (none of who were standing up) and partly on common sense. (ie I've seen plenty of people who COULD sit down for their various jobs, but DON'T).

Although it's a guess, I believe it's not a million miles from the ACTUAL figure, but if you can quote any facts which suggest otherwise, I'll be more than happy to admit that my guess was wrong by however much.

:)

Corabar Steve
25-09-2008, 11:34 AM
You didn't say anything about it being a guess in the post I quoted & it's not the first time that you've quoted a figure as if it's a fact & then backtracked to say it was a guess ot an estimate.

rob1963

You didn't say anything about it being a guess in the post I quoted

I didn't think I had to, as I'd have thought that was fairly obvious...unless of course you know of anywhere where someone can find official figures for the percentage of DJs who stand up!

It's not the first time that you've quoted a figure as if it's a fact & then backtracked to say it was a guess or an estimate.

That's because if I say something unclear which is then queried or pointed out to me, I'm more than happy to either clarify when I meant or admit it if what I've said is shown to be wrong.

As a rough guide for future reference though, if I say "99% of DJs stand up" it's likely to be a guess, but if I say "According to a survey on xxx website 99% of DJs stand up" then it's NOT!

Rob, you never admit it when you're wrong

If that's really what you think, then you clearly don't read all my posts.

There have been a number of occasions when I either got the wrong end of the stick about something or said something which I believed to be correct but was shown to be wrong...and in those cases I have apologised to the persons concerned publicly on the forum.

I can't remember all the details, but I know it's happened several times with Darren (I'm sure he'll remember) and with several other members too.

you simply twist and warp your wording, change direction and avoid direct questions put to you

I don't twist or warp any wording, change direction or avoid direct questions, although I can think of a few people who DO.

If you want to complain about people who warp wording & change direction & avoid direct questions, maybe you should look a little closer to home.

I seem to remember a post from you a day or two back saying that ghetto blasters are inadequete as back up (post #75 in this very thread). Later you did another post (#89) saying that you'd said ghetto blasters were inadequate as back up IN NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES...which you hadn't...and the previous post is still there to prove that!

I even pointed out & asked you about this discrepency in the first half of my post #90, but you avoided my direct question...just like you've accused ME of doing!

Also, having seen the way YOU sometimes respond when your posts are questioned by people, all I can say is that the words pot kettle & black really do come to mind!

If you DO want to see someone who's an expert at avoiding answering direct questions or admitting when they're wrong, try looking in the direction of Barnet.

What I meant originally, which I thought was implied anyway, was that in my opinion a ghetto blaster is not an adequate sound system to supply a mobile disco. I did not say it was inadequate as an emergency backup, however, where expectations are obviously lower.

I'm fairly confident everyone else understood my posts, and I suspect even you did - but you decided to twist my words in order to fuel your pointless argument, which everyone else could see was futile.

Steve would disagree with you on that one, as he posted to say he used one for an outside gig for 100 people which was MORE than adequate! My opinion is based on my own experience, and as I have never encountered a ghetto blaster with that level of power, then I don't base my opinion on it.

Why did you just post that anyway? Steve's already stated his opinion at least once, which I've read, so there's no need for you to tell me what he posted.

In that instance (who paid for something) I answered clearly & concisely.

I bought some kit for the company. I physically bought it, I handed over the card, tapped in the PIN, received the goods & it is my name on the card. The payment came from the company account & therefore it was actually paid for by the company. Darren's issue was with the phrase "I bought too much kit" as in it looked like I paid for it out of my own money (which I never stated or intentionally implied) All of which was stated in the thread concerned (NADJ AGM thread or CRS open day / show thread as I recall)

Any others? I'd hate to think that you'd got the wrong end of the stick from any conversations that I'd had with any other forum members.
