Suggestions Please....Just starting out - Lighting Options/ New purchases?!?

Hi Guys,

Firstly, hope this is in the right sub-forum. If not, mods feel free to move to where it's most appropriate.

I'm canvassing for opinions/suggestions. I'm just starting out 'Gigging' semi-seriously, doing things like family parties etc just to get some experience, and try to start to 'hone' my skills.

Audio/Playout wise i think i'm not too bad: Numark Dimension 4 Amp, Behringher 1520 Eurolive Speakers, Gemini CDX-602 CD Decks and a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop (and PCDJ).

It's lighting wise that i'm having a bit of a dilemma. Currently have: 3m goalpost, 'T' bar, 2x Soundlab Soundscan scanners, 2x Acme Stormbirds, 2x Prolight Dicromoons and 3 x 3ft by 3 ft lightboxes, run from a NCD chaser. Do you think that's enough for starters? Was thinking about having the 2 colourscans and the 2 stormbirds on the goalpost, with the 3 lightboxes set out front of the 'booth'.

Would a ImpossibLED work as a centrepiece, or is that not worth it? Am definately getting another 2 colourscans once i have the dosh together. Any other ideas or suggestions on either using what i've got or buying a new addition would be appriecated!

Will try and post a couple of piccies of setup once i get the chance; with a full-time job and 2 young children, free time is something i have little of at present LOL!

as you are just starting i would say that the lighting is adequate,the impossiled would make a nice centrepiece if you want to add to what you got.

Hi Dave

I have occasionally used a 3m Goalpost with just 2 Colourscans, 2 12" mirrorballs, 2 LED PAR56's, and the Impossibled as a centrepiece. Because of the versatility of all of these lights, especially when DMX'd, the effect is more than adequate for many venues.

A lot depends on the size of the venues.

I tend to carry as much as I can and leave in the motor what I cant fit in.

It would be a lot easier and safer to find out how big the venue is beforehand.

You wouldn't have to leave anything on display in the car then either.

I must admit it does worry me leaving gear in the car.
Having said that it is only 3 rope lights which I only use when there is a stage. The rope lights tend to get trampled if there is no stage.
The last gig I did had a tiny stage so I couldnt use them and so they got left in the car. The client said there was a stage so I expected a stage not something the size of table tennis table !

You might want to have the lazer eye surgery checked, there are a few on here that have posted photos of their rigs with ropelights on.

I would say you've got your lighting pretty much sorted (maybe a good idea to look at the impossiabLED;) ). Just make sure you are totally happy with your P.A equipment. sound quality is much more important than the light show.

I have 3 ropelights, blue one, purple one and a multi coloured one.

I dont always use them tho unless I am on stage as they tend to get trampled on when on the floor.

When I had turntables I used to hang them across one speaker, over the decks then over the next speaker.

My CD deck is too small to hang the rope lights on.

I supose I could hang them off my lighting T bar.

wrap it round the feet and body of it, just keep it from wires, also dont let it go near your levels on your mixer, i did once and they cut out on me, leveless for half a gig lol

Does any one still use UV lights ?

I used to light up the front board of my disco using a 4 foot strip UV light.

I managed to get hold of a 400 watt UV cannon on ebay.
That puts out some serious UV light.
The bulb is huge.

uv lights of course we do, scanners, uvs, lasers, strobing scanners, its what 18ths and 21st parties are all about.
