How many people look at the venue or 'wing it'?

How many people check the www. for the internet?

Just interested as I have a gig...last minute...but I am trying to work around it, as I'm unable too get a visit in.....:o

Look at the website and then ring them or email them asking for details of access etc. I have an uplighting job in a couple of weeks in a hall and emailed the lady in charge asking for a plan of the hall with access, electric points, stage and sizes and she faxed it over within 10 minutes!

Most people are very helpful if you approach them in the right way.

I emailed the lady in question to thank her and to tell her how efficient she was and she couldn't do enough for me after that!

If the venue is local (within 15 miles) then I will visit but if the venue is past this then I will look online or ask the client.

As I have started to do risk assements I think I should really go out on site more often.

Not so difficult for me to visit; there's very few places I'd need to go to anyway on my patch as I've already been to the majority.

Usually make a visit in conjunction with customer meeting - nothing better than a 3-way meet to make everything go smoothly at the event. Less chance of "misunderstandings".

I've always lived in the same area & rarely have to travel for more than 30 minutes to a gig, so I've worked at most venues a number of times in the past, making site visits unnecessary.

If I DO get a booking at a venue I dont know or one which is out of my area, I'll either visit it beforehand, speak to the venue on the phone or ask on this forum.

I'd be VERY worried if I just turned up without knowing about access, especially as I never have a roadie to assist me.

If I can I do visit new venues or more usually talk to the agent/client/other dj's/venue owner or manager about the place but sometimes I just have to turn up and use my experience and versatility to cope.

I have had a couple of gigs where they had pictures of the venue on the internet. Saved me a couple of trips.

I'll visit the venue if there's any doubt about access.
Previously visited venues don't come into this category of course, neither do venues with good informative web sites.

So long as yo uare allowing for the costs of this in your price.
A venue 30 miles away is two gallons of petrol and over an hours drive and work.

My main concern is about a gig being upstairs without a lift.
I always ask upfront and if it is I refuse it.
I am here to enjoy DJing not kill myself !

Very true. People are, generally, always happy to be helpful - makes them feel important and they are! Without the help of such people we would be going in blind.

That would apply to me too. There are not many venues within a few miles of here that I've worked but if it was local, I'd pop by for a look see.

you can actually get floor plans from the web for a lot of venues these days- printing one of these out and taking to client meetings is useful, as is looking at them when quoting on the phone so you can judge no. of people etc.

Funnily enough, it was a council hall and she must have emailed me back within 10 mins, so I then emailed her back saying how impressed I was at her efficiency in replying and helping and after that she couldn't do enough for me.

If possible i try and visit the venue.I have found that most hotel staff are very helpful when you explain to them the reason why you want to see the function hall.

And this has put you a great position before you even go to the venue, Darren. I bet they're every bit as helpful when you get there.

I can't vote on this one because I always phone the venue if I've never been there before. I confirm the booking details as well as get any other information I need to make my job easier. And, like Darren says, staff have always been happy to help. After all, I often get clients asking about venues and my opinion seems to go a long way in the client booking or not booking the venue! ;)

It's not me doing it, but I'm sure they will be.

Normally, I email the venue for any info about access, stages, noise limiters, changing facilities, parking facilities etc and also to confirm the ETA. I do this for myself and any DJs out working for me as it gives me peace of mind and I know that they have all the info they need and won't get any nasty surprises.
