i never used to have complete faith in mine but now i've got a denon screensaver i feel strangely bullet proof :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Only once since the day I got it (about 2 days after they were launched) has my d2 crapped out and that's when the HDD I was attempting to read from was corrupted having not been 'safely removed' from my laptop :bang:

Otherwise it's been totally dependable.

Always have a laptop connected and running with backup tunes loaded just-in-case and I have an iphone in my pocket with a directory full of 'bankers' as a last resort.

Then there's the spare HDDs, spare laptop etc. etc. but that's too much info!

For some of us it's the same thing!

I've done 11 digital gigs now, and I probably already have more faith in my D2 than I did in any of my CD players.

I carry a couple of spare ipods, and If the D2 itself DID throw a wobbly, It would probably be fine after a reboot, unlike a CD player. If THAT goes wrong, it won't work regardless of how many times you turn it off & on again.

Despite my faith in my player, I'd NEVER go out without back up...even though I DO have two spare ipods, as I think that would be incredibly stupid, which I'm not!

I have never found a problem with my USB controller ( only when I used a slightly dodgy phono lead) for over 18 months now.

Back up you MUST have-- I always leave mine packed away next to me for an emergency ( USB reader plus Hard drive) and as always I have the Mini Disc running as an immediate back up.

As Rob says USB readers are extremely reliable.

Hard Drives probably not so reliable because they have mechanical working parts.

That's a darn good question :cool:

I guess everything we use has to prove its self to a point before we are 100%.
Take the CD as an example; other than checking for finger prints we just load them up and think no more of it unless we get an issue with a track skipping.
Basically they have proven themselves to be very reliable if kept clean and as long as you buy a half decent player and clean the lens regular then you don't tend to have any problems.

I don't think hard drive players are any different, can be more of an issue when using a laptop as other factors come in to it like how reliable the other software being run is, but for the dedicated players they are only doing basic functions as the CD players have done for years although a couple of more jobs as we also have search etc.
But basically it's doing no more and as long as you don't knock the hard drive about too much I don't think youl get any issues, that's assuming the firmware of the actual machine is functioning fully with no bugs which is a totally different situation again, but as a rule we do tend to find out very quickly if there are any firmware issues present and the companies do tend to sort them relatively quick..

But basically to not have a backup plan is suicide, so I also have the CD decks

I think you'll find that CD DJs going digital tend to keep their CDs as backup because they're a) comfortable with the format and b) have the assets already.

Laptop DJs going to USB readers more than likely don't choose CDs as their backup medium.

Exceptions, obviously, but I think that's how it goes in general.

I've not bought CDs on a regular basis for about 8 or 9 years - just the occasional one where I can't get a download - usually something wacky. So when I bought my d2 I was coming from laptop already, so my CD stash stays nicely boxed up in the loft where it's been since we moved here 3 years ago :o

I have a HC4500 which controls VDJ and an HD2500 media player.

I have a back-up laptop which is quite high spec (it's my work one, so needs to be). I generally don't take it to my (ex?) residency. I do take it to private functions such as birthdays & weddings but (touch wood) haven't had to get it out yet. :D

I still have 1 portable CD player and 1 mix CD in case of emergencies.

Only thing I could really do with is a spare controller but money is a bit tight at the mo :(

Sorry Martin, I wasnt meaning back up at base--I meant back up at the gig--which I think is what Penmare was talking about originally.

I do indeed, but they usually stay in the van, so not really hard work.

However, I'm thinking of just taking a wallet with a few dozen of my most-used CDs once I've done a few more digital gigs with no problems.

Rob, as you've got several iPods, you could in theory yank them from the d2 (or use spares) and just hotwire them straight into the mixer with a 3.5mm jack -> phono cable?

I've done this with my iPhone a couple of times now when I've pulled down requests from itunes whilst on-site and played them out there & then. OK so you lose a little on the audio quality but it's still pretty darn good :)

Now that I have stopped doing the firmware updates I've got every faith in the Dennon ;)

Still have the CD trays fitted incase anyone brings along a cd to play or in the case of like at the weekend the Fashion house that I was PA'ing for brought their music on CD.

However the laptop is always ready to go should things go a bit pear shaped :p

Come on lads, all the Controllers will operate CD/DVD caddys. When I get the second Controller, it's going to be connected to one for just that reason. I shall then retire the Minidiscs from active service. I shall then shed a tear or two. :( :(

Yes I know but it's never plugged in or fired up......I must admit to just having the Denon switched on...that's it...complete faith in it.

I have loads of confidence in my Denon. I have had the power go off before due to someone unplugging the extension lead that it was connected to and it has powered up with no loss of data or anything. Due to laziness the other day I left it in it's case in my lock up on a very cold night. First thing the next morning I started it up to check it and again, no problems whatsoever.

I do have back up in the form of CD players but that's generally because I do not have everything on the Denon at the moment. When I do then I will either have another Denon which is a duplicate as a back up or just one case of emergency CD's and the players and that will be it.

This is exactly what I'm planning on doing as part of my back-up, Vectis.

I'm currently waiting for my brother to knock up a lead, and I'll then be able to plug any of my ipods into the spare (third) channel on my mixer.

Although my 'controller' is my laptop with very stable software so not really answering about 'controllers' but thought I'd drop in tupence worth - or actually, call that thrupence! Inflation!
