View Full Version : Would you help?

On another recent thread mention has been made of the possibility of getting sued if you give someone first aid. Also recently a man was murdered in Norwich when he intervened in a fight.

If you saw someone in trouble would you help?

I'm no chicken but if it were a gang of lads (or ladies these days) I would definately not help, I'd call the police but there's no way I would approach them, you just don't know what weapons they might have.

Luckily in Beverley, we don't see too much aggressive fighting.

In my day if you were in a fight, you got punched - if you went down, that was that. These days (it seems) they're a lot more fired up and kicks / stomps to the head are not uncommon. I doubt the drug culture helps either!

If it was in an accident, however, Yes I would definately help.

I agree with you about the change in culture in fighting. When I was young too there were weapons (Teddy boys and bicycle chains spring to mind) but you never kicked a man when he was down.

Despite the dangers, I'd probably try to stop the fight. If it were me or a family member being attacked I would hope a good samaritan would try to help too.

It all depends on the circumstances, if a bunch of youths outside a pub then no unless I had my length of hosepipe with me.
Reason being your not just contending with a skin full of beer theses days were its quite easy to make them see sense sometimes, these days its the norm for them to get as hammered as possible before even going out and sometimes includes a few snorts of the white stuff so no matter how much you try to get the situation in hand or how many times you hit them back, they are so fired up and out of it, it makes no difference.

Although I have been warned on a couple of occasions by the plod for diving in heavy handed to break a fight up, they say its ok as long as you use minimum force, sorry officer but it required a bit more than minimal force to get the situation in hand so nobody was dead as one of the blokes was kicking the other up and down the pavement :(

On the other side of the coin, were driving through a local village the other week and I spotted an elderly chap heading for a fall due to a slant on the pavement.
He had just come out of the Spar shop with his paper in hand.
As I pulled over he hit the floor face first almost so was pretty shook up and his mouth was bleeding.
So I helped him up and walked him home, although the fella wasn't so much hurt but more embarrassed as he was an ex rugby player, O yeh he also had a lemon and it was rolling down the middle of the road and he was more bothered about it getting squashed, there pricey them lemons you know.

I called back a couple of days later to see how he was doing but other than needing a new pair of false teeth as he had damaged them he was in good shape.

If there was a risk to my own safety then I wouldn't. I'm not a big guy and wouldn't stand a chance against a group of thugs.

A few years ago, I did stop at the scene of a hit and run. I was driving a minibus bus at the time and I got wave down and asked if I had a first aid kit.

The guy that had been hit had a severe head wound and there was a stream of blood running down the road from it.

One of the guys standing there asked if I had a bandage and direct me how to apply it.

Turns out he was an off duty paramedic but didn't want to touch the injured person.

When the Police arrived I went to stand up and said to one of the officers that he could take over now but he said no you're alright, you're doing fine. He didn't want to touch him either. It wasn't until the ambulance arrived that someone else took over.

Depends on the situation at the time I guess.
If a guy is getting beaten by a gang then yes I would. If a guy is beating or getting heavy handed with a woman, then yes I would. If it's 2 gangs of blokes fighting eachother than no.

I've done Shotokan Karate in my youth. Also done a little bit of Judo and have lots of mates who are doormen who have taught me various moves. I used to like confontration when I was younger but have grown up and to be honest, I hate it now. I get the adrenalin when I see something happening but rather than wade in, I would walk off and get away from the situation. These days it's all weapons and safety in numbers so it is best to steer clear if possible but I like to think that there are decent people around who would jump in and help me out if I were in the same situation so that's why I would.

I don't have any kids or anything so I can understand some of the family guys on here not doing it....Lastly, an incident happened outside one of the nightclubs in town about 2 years ago where a bloke intervened as his mate was getting beaten up by 3 blokes. The guy got punched and when he fell to the floor he knocked his head on the pavement and was killed. He had 3 little kids and was 29. Sometimes it can be the easiest thing that ends up nasty.

I know I'll get shot down for my opinion on this, but I'm always honest about my views, so here goes.

Assuming we're talking about strangers, if I saw one or more people in some kind of dispute or fight in the street, then I'd generally NOT get involved.

Firstly, you're unlikely to know how the scrap started or who was responsible. In other words, if you see someone being set upon, it could be that the person who's being set upon was the person who started the scrap in the first place.

Secondly, we've all seen many stories on the news about good samaritans who end up dead. In some cases, they merely asked someone to pick up a sweet wrapper, stop throwing chips, stop swearing, not be so noisy etc.

We all know there are plenty of young people who carry knives these days, so if we DO get involved, it's very likely they'll end up being used on US.

Life is very sort anyway, and mine is way too valuable to risk losing it by getting involved in other peoples disputes. As for those who WOULD get involved, that's their own decision, as long as they're aware it might be the last thing they ever do.

The other problem is that you could end up getting sued for assault by the person you were trying to stop attacking the other person. Sad but true.

As for helping someone who was in trouble either because their car had broken down, they'd fallen over or had some other accident, were ill or something similar, then I'd always do anything I could to help them.

I didn't realise that we were also talking about helping people out who may have had a fall or broken down etc... Yes, of course I would help out. Not enough people do unfortunately. I saw a drunk tramp in the centre of town fall off a bench clutching his bottle of cider with both hands a few years back. It all seemed to happen in slow motion and I saw the state of his head after he hit the pavement, it wasn't nice at all. People just walked past him as if he was a piece of dirt. Me and my missus and another bloke who ran over helped him out until the ambulance came. People were quick enough to form a circle around us all so that they could watch.

Last year I was actually talking to my mum in town when an old lady fell over flat on her face. It was a right old mess and I froze instantly. My mum ran over (she used to be a nurse) and tried to help her but the old lady was dead. This will sound horrible so apologies but she had literally smashed her face in and people were just walking past as if nothing had happened. I felt really bad.

What I am getting at is that sometimes you never know what has happened. Yes, there could be an occasion where someone may have started something and then got their comeuppance but there is no need for ganging up on people. One on one is tolerated but safety in numbers / cowards in numbers doesn't do anything for me. If the guy who started it was beaten up and laying there, no matter what he did, I would still try and help him out if I could. I would hate to think that if it were me and I was in pain, people wouldn't just walk past as if nothing had happened. These days too many people don't want to get involved for whatever reason and want an easy life and think that if they look or walk the other way then it doesn't matter as long as they are ok. That's their choice but it's not mine. Yes, I may regret it one day but I want to help people...simple as.

If you saw someone in trouble would you help?

I would and I have on several occasions. I saw a man lying in the middle of the road, so I pulled over, put hazard lights on and a warning triangle up and phoned the police. I was very careful when talking to him not to get too close in case he pulled a knife on me, but he didn't respond and I thought he was dead. I touched his hand and it was freezing, but the police had turned up by now and they dealt with him.

Another time, I intervened at a petrol station when 3 drunken youths started to beat up a taxi driver ass they were disagreeing about their fayre. I tried talking to them at first and then got my body in the way whilst persuading them to stop.. I rang the police again and it took about 5 minutes to get through (this was 999 too)). By that time they were whipping him with the radio aerial, so I ran in the garage and asked if they'd phoned for help and the South African assistant just told me it was nothing to do with him.

One more I can remember was when a young chap had been beaten up and was on the ground and couldn't move, so I talked to him to keep him awake and covered him with my jacket to keep him warm until the paramedics arrived. The guy was in absolute agony and the paramedics arrived about 30 mins later telling me they had been re-routed and come from Slough, some 20 miles away.

I like to think what goes around, comes around.

Use your brain Rob, if they ended up dead then they wouldn't think it at all would they!!?!??

I like to think that whilst I am here I will do my best and be 'nice'. When I was 21 I went out for the night with a load of mates who got me absolutely bladdered and I ended up outside the club on a grass bank vomitting big style. I was out of it and anything could have happened to me but one thing I remember was that a guy and his girlfriend turned me over on to my side and stayed with me until my mates arrived. I think it was then that made me a 'nicer' human being and not an idiot like I used to be. I would do the same for someone else.

Now Rob, you may not have had any incidents like that (maybe others haven't either but would still help?), so you may well see it from a different light but let's just say for example that one night you are doing a quiz or a disco and someone gets the hump big time with you and there's trouble. How would you feel if people just walked past and didn't take any notice and let you either take or give a beating? I was on a bus once in London in the late 80s with my girlfriend at the time. There was a young black guy sitting at the back of the bus and a guy in his 50's went and sat right next to him (the bus was nearly empty as it was the night bus from Finsbury Park to Trafalgar Square so there was no need for him to sit right next to him)...I guess the bloke was drunk and all I could hear was really racist comments towards the black guy. It didn't get violent, I didn't give it time to but things that get to me are Racism and Homophobia. Once I heard the 'N' word and a few others (my girlfriend at the time was Vietnamese), I walked down to where they were sitting and asked if everything was ok. The drunk bloke stood up and swore and me and went to push me, I dodged him and he fell over. The bus stopped and the driver got out of his seat and we got the bloke off the bus via the middle exit doors. The black guy thanked me and I will always remember what he said to me...he said "Thanks, there are some decent people around, I owe you one"...we shook hands and I never saw him again.

So, yes, I will always do whatever I can to help no matter what it is. (Sorry for the long reply but I actually feel strongly about this guys).

on the shakermaker thing ..... again laterally thinking , guy is obviously racist throws a punch .... connects shakermaker hits the floor ....... black youth gets pasted as then does vietnamese girlfriend who now seriously annoyed drunk guy know the unconscious shaker maker was with ........ ooohh how it could escelate into something really unpleasent because someone wants to be a hero ....... and another spin again , driver stops bus to save vietnamese girlfriend and also ends up with a kicking 4 casualties for the price of one .............. very mercinary outlook and god forbid im ever in the situation, but damage limitation would be foremost in my mind for the record i wouldnt want anyone taking a kicking for me especially if they had someone who would miss them as much as my family would me.

Hold on, hold on ...."....wants to be a hero..". I don't like that comment mate. The situation was easy to suss out at the time so let's give you the heads up. The guy was drunk, I wasn't. I was also back then (as I said) doing Shotokan karate. I didn't go for long but I learnt the basics. If I hadn't of been confident at the time (which I was as that's what the Karate helped with), then I MAYBE wouldn't have intervened...saying that, I probably still would have because I don't like racism.

I do sort of agree with you there Rob, but to be honest If I again spotted somebody having 10 bells kicked out of them I just couldn’t leave it regardless of who started what.
My lad is 14 now so could be that person being kicked to death in a few years, I would hope somebody would intervene if it was the case regardless of the circumstances.
If it’s somebody just having fisty cuffs or swinging handbags I would just leave them to it.
If it was a crowed having a go at somebody I wouldn’t just leave it but use my head and not just dive in but probably call the plod.

How strong or fit you are has nothing to do with it.

Am not out to be a hero or brave heart or anything like and not the hardest bloke in the land, but I just couldn't walk/drive past somebody who was being kicked to death, whether its right or wrong to try to sort the situation doesn't even compute with me as its just my character and for me a no brainer.

The society we live in is the main reason for me having the views I do.

When first posting, I said that I'd probably get shot down for having that opinion, as I was expecting that to happen big time, but it didn't.

Quite a few people even said they'd do the same as me!

One thing about this forum...it's the least predictable thing I know.

Sometimes I post my thoughts expecting to be shot down, but it doesn't happen.

Before my wee boy was born, I'd weigh up the situation but likely end up helping someone who needed it.

Now I probably wouldn't.

For example, there was a young guy on breakfast TV last week who was getting some award for lifting a woman (who had fallen) off a train track at a station 30 seconds before a train came. Before, I wouldn't have thought twice about doing the same. Now, I wouldn't risk leaving my son without a father to save some stranger.

On the story, a comment was made by someone about "all the other people standing around" as if they were all bad people, which made me pretty angry. Maybe all those people had responsibilities and a little common sense. Because their frontal lobes aren't fully developed, teenagers have little sense of danger and little thought for the consequences of their actions (see here (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/teenbrain/interviews/todd.html)). The guy wasn't a hero - just a normal teenager

The sensible thing would be to not get involved, however I think if it came down to it rational thinking would go out the window and I'd have to intervene if someone's life was in danger... luckily I've not been in any sitaution like this so its hard to tell really..

The logical and sensible answer is to weigh upy the situation, all possible consequences, the likelihood of a successful outcome versus a bad one and act accordingly.

However, since I'm a stupid old git, I'd be inclined to just get stuck in.;) :D

Those people who would not help someone else are either selfish or cowards or both in my opinion.Every action taken by a sane human is selfish. Even if you help someone, you're only doing it to make yourself feel good about it.

At the basic level, that is what's happening.

maybe not directly .... but i bet it did .... so not a selfless act , if it made her feel crappy i doubt she would have continued.

but whether its "because it makes you feel good" or "i couldnt live with myself if i did nothing" the fact remains how you feel about a situation does influence actions.

no not at all just suggests that you indeed get "something" from it if it made you feel dreadful or say you lost the first 17 games of a season and all the parents stood and berated you and swore at you you may feel differently about doing it ..... i don't know?

What you lot are forgetting, is that Theo and I are from an age where a serious fight meant a black eye and bruises. Death was very rarely an option. Younger folk on here are more savvy than us, and very aware of the worst case scenario, which can happen all too often nowadays. :(

absolutely my grandad was a copper in derby when he was with us and frequently told us storys about how he attended burglaries on his own and split up pub fights with just him and a partner ........ lots of things that these days require 7 horses a van and 15 men.

it is so sad that the world has so little respect for one another , one of the hardest things ive ever had to accept in my life is that some people are just :Censored: bags right through ......... i used to try and see the good in everyone .......... and took me alot of therapy to realise some people just arent good or nice in any way.

If that is true for you then fair enough, but you cannot possibly say that for the whole of mankind.Yes, it applies to the whole of mankind. You really have to think outside of the box, it applies at the very basic level of human behaviour, before the layers of society/law/morals are even thought about.

I'm not at all saying it's a bad thing, because if these instincts weren't there, we would not exist as a race.

How many people get a beating for walking down the road & doing nothing compared to the number who get a beating for getting involved in someone elses dispute, such as trying to break up a fight, telling some yobs to stop doing something etc?

Sorry to backtrack so much but I missed this the first time around...

Rob, how many of those so-called disputes are actually one person taking umbrage at another person for "giving them a queer look" or merely being there?

Sadly, modern youth, and even more sadly, modern youth that are new to this or any other 'Western' country, have no sense of proportion or scale. Shootings for beer money, knifings for minor slights, severe beatings for poorly chosen words.

Throw in alcohol or any other disinhibiting drugs and I think that often calling the police and remaining an alive and credible witness possibly with video or stills footage is actually more useful.
