Hi there
My name is Kevin. Myself and others within my community are organising a community fundraising event to help children living in poverty both here and in Africa. I was wondering if you would be willing to allow us the use of some equipment for one night. Ideally we are looking for a 1k rig, some basic lighting and a smoke machine, we have our own dj and mixing equipment. Anything you could contribute would be appreciated and in return you would be listed on all promotional material, including your telephone number. There will be approximately 500 flyers and 25 larger posters distributed. You would also be welcome to put up signs at the event. I have a attached a draft copy of the flyer for you to look at which includes your info. The full details of the event are also below. We would also be willing to collect and drop off any equipment and pay a deposit if required.

It doesn't sound fake but I personaly wouldn't lend my gear under any circumstances, although if local enough and not booked I would possibly offer my services for free.

I can't decide whether it's fake or not, but either way I personally wouldn't touch it with a barge pole...

...because I'm funny about people using my gear & don't do equipment hire anyway, whether free or otherwise.

You will know its fake if the number is wrong or doesn't exist. Also get the charity reg. number and check it on line to see if its real or not.

My thoughts..mmmm November...Saturday...Free...No chance..When i work for free its when iv not got paid work too.

And i would never allow a dj to run his gear thro my pa even if i was present..

So in my opinion they will struggle to get what there looking for,and to chance yer arm and quote them to do it yourself and give them a show to remember...

I don't think it is fake but I'm a gullible softy and would offer to be the DJ for the event if I wasn't already booked.

I would offer to do the disco as long as I was running my own gear.
Wouldn't do it for free though - they'd get a nice discount so would ask for £150 and see what the response is.

I help out at my Mums charity shop a couple of times a year but it's always mid-week stuff like fashion shows. If it were a Saturday night I wouldn't do it and she said she understands.

As for lights, surely there is somewhere to hire them out from?

Assuming it IS genuine, I'm assuming that "we have our own DJ" actually means "We have someone who's going to have a go at being the DJ on the night"

I reckon that sounds about right Rob, no problem with that if using their own kit but wouldn't be touching mine.
Am pretty sure they have some idea of the costs involved in the equipment, so in a small way is a bit cheeky to ask if somebody ells could use your kit.
Its a bit like phoning an electrician and saying we have a bloke that will do the work but could we borrow your tools.

Thousands I should imagine as that is what most bedroom DJs use either with headphones or small active PC speakers etc

If it is genuine, I would be inclined to help out but only if I was present with my gear. And that would involve a cost to them ;)

I think I will get back to him tonight and basically say I can do the evening but it will be using my equipment (lights, PA, mixer, etc) and only I can touch it. I may give him a small discount but I won’t be doing it for free

Sounds OK to me BUT I would want to go with the gear - I would not just let some stanger come and collect it without a very big deposit equal to the value of the gear or more.

It does not seem RIGHT to me there is just something about it, if they have a dj already why has he not got his own gear. To be honest i would leave it and not bother going down the road of opening a potential can of worms.

500 flyers and 25 larger posters seems ridiculous seen as stastically you get a 1% return on a mailshot, so that means off all the promotional material you will have 1% of 500 people there.mmm

He says he will pay a deposit, just say the deposit is £3000 done by wire transfer into your account, then see what he says. i think they are looking for a greenhorn who will just hand over equipment.

Just imagine a scenario, & I sincerely hope I'm wrong, of your equipment being used to pound out music all night by a 'DJ' who views clip lights as a mark of achievment.
When the authorities turn up to stop it, following complaints, who's name is gonna be prominently featured as responsible for the sound amplification ?

You have a point there; I was reading the flyer and one line stood out “bring your own alcohol!”

I have sent an e-mail to him basically saying I will supply all of the equipment required and only I can use the equipment.
I gave him a discount on the price and was planning to give him a good lightshow but I haven’t heard anything yet.

I also spoke to one of the charities concerned and it is a recognised function.

All I can say is any DJ accepting THAT must have a screw loose!

It's a bit like selling someone some speakers, letting them take them and agreeing to them coming back later in the day with the cash!

That isnt true at all. Lots and lots of functions are held where there is no licenced bar and people bring their own refreshments. Line Dance Socials frequently stat BYO and the same is true of lots of other events.

Possibly the charity recognises the funds generated by the event, but will they be involved in the organisation or share responsibility for it ?

I could jump off a cliff to raise funds for the RNLI for example, they'd get there cheque,......but it wouldn't make what I did sensible or legal.
(Some members may think it desirable though :eek: ) ;)

What Theo says is perfectly true, but do Barn Dances/Socials run 8 till late and be publicised by so many posters & flyers. In my experience they have a very disciplined and structured format which I find refreshingly encouraging.

Funnily enough I'm doing a kit hire for a DJ on this very same night, who doesn't have his own kit because he is a CLUB DJ. and does walk in jobs, He paid a deposit 6 months ago, and will be paying the final balance this week. On the day I will be installing the kit, and at the end of the night, de-rigging and removing it. The charge to him was £50 less than if he'd hired me to do the job, and today I've taken a birthday booking at a very good rate, with an 11.30 finish, which fits in beautifully. Sometimes I wonder if some of you lot have got a commercial bone in your body!

Well maybe no bones ;) , but my commercial sense is protected by the skull, at least sufficiently to see the difference between lucrative hire & install to a known quantity and free loan of equipment to complete strangers against a token returnable deposit.

That’s exactly what I have offered;
I have offered to supply him with all of the kit required on one condition that I and only I can use it.
I have even offered him a discount but I haven’t heard anything back yet.

I think he was hoping someone would just give him some kit for free.
