Would you pick up a hitchhiker?

Simple question, inspired by "would you help" thread. Comparable as there is a certain risk to personal safety if picking up a hitcher, especially if you're alone in the car / van.

Personally I usually pick up hitchers, and in my experience 75% of them are well dodgy - I was once stuck in my car for 6 hours with someone who had just been released from prison after doing a stretch for GBH :eek:

I guess it's because I was stranded once and had to hitch a lift, "do unto others" and all that so...I usually stop if I can. If it's a long journey then the company helps, too.

I don't know why I did, but I don't think I would now.

I picked up a hitch hiker once, he had a massive ruck sack with him, i asked him what was in it, he said 'mind your own business' so i said listen mate if you dont tell me whats in the rucksack im gonna have to ask you to get out, he said i told you earleir 'mind your own business' so i pushed him out and drove off, with the ruck sack in my car !!!well dodgy

If they were female & fairly attractive, then I would (and have) pick them up.

If it was a guy, probably not (I never have yet).

Very dodgy - obviously I didn't pick her up, also it was a company pool car and lastly - what if my wife found out - I'd be a dead man.

I think you'll find that in these cases, as soon as you stop the fit young girl then calls her 3 shall we say "older and less fit" mates (or blokes) out of the bushes and they all pile into your car :D

I think you'll find these guys have already been provided with the funds to transport themselves - be it by train or taxi or whatever - and they're just trousering it by getting a free lift. :cool:

To answer the poll, no, but only because I only have a 2-seater and if I'm going anywhere where hitchhikers are likely to be in occurrence the boot's already full with stay away bag and the passenger seat's piled up with laptop bag and any errands that need sorting (as I seem to be the family's official mainland-to-island parcel service).

I have picked up loads of hitchhikers over the years and many of them have been really nice and interesting. I must admit I do choose them on visual impressions and would not pick up someone that looked rough.

i dont think i would ever pick up a hiitch hiker......i never have......you never know who could it be standing at the side of the road.....they could look so innocent and be a serial killer of some sort......NO CHANCE!!!!!!!!!

I picked one up by accident the other month.. I'd been gigging in Birmingham and came back down the M5, popped into Worcester for the obligitary Pizza and then headed home, just past the Junction 7 roundabout there was a red card pulled over in the entrance to a field and a guy who must have been in his 70s waving to me.

So I pull over assuming he's broken down and in trouble, when infact he's been out drinking in Worcester, missed his bus home (which was 11.15, its now gone 2am) and already walked the 3 miles or so out to the motorway and wanted to get back home, which is a further 12-13 miles!

Couldn't really refuse after that and I reckoned given his age and intoxication I could probably take him :D So I went an alternative way home that goes closer to where he lived, he wouldn't let me take him right to his door, despite me offering. He was a decent enough chap, pretty worse for wear and we must have talked about music/Dj-ing etc. for the whole 20min journey, couldn't shut him up!

Was very strange though!
