It's one thing for someone to book another disco as they are cheap, but as for booking another disco because they are cheap AND not much good?

As I've said before, there's a class of punter out there who hire a disco purely because it's considered the done thing, much like putting on a buffet meal. They're not really interested themselves, they just know that it's something they're supposed to do to entertain the majority of the guests.

I had one woman recently who really wanted some of the features of the top package but at the bottom package price. We negotiated for a while, only because it was for during a quiet spell I might add, and I thought we'd settled on an amicable configuration so I quoted my very best price. She wanted it for £20 less and I wouldn't budge. That's when she told me she knows someone "who does discos" who'll do it for free, but his gear wasn't up to much. I wished her well, told her I couldn't match his price and reminded her that with room hire, food etc. that £20 really wasn't here or there but I wouldn't be doing it for less. She promised to think about it but I didn't hear back.

I think its now worth reminding people as we enter the recession which MAY make life difficult for most of us quoting medium to upper price quotes that theres a lot of unreliable cowboys out there--as quite often we get calls for last minute let downs from---

When I say--so how much were you being charged--I usually burst out laughing at the figures--and say WHaaaaaaat kind of Entertainer were you expecting for that:eek:

Doesnt matter if its a DJ, Barn Dance Caller or Band---

This is only relevant for events that absolutely rely on an appearance--Wedding, Birthday, Corporate Events etc--

Some punters still wont care--

I am getting very concerned about Fund Raising Events where the latest financial meltdown problems will make selling tickets very difficult, have had one cancelled next week where I suspect theres going to be a problem getting a cancellation fee.

Sadly, we have decided not to appear anymore at these kind of events because of the financial aggro involved.

well on the upside the £100 disco man is charging based on his skills...... and not trying to overcharge and pretend to be as good as dj's who have been around for a while and know what they are doing.

wish there was more honest dj's like this in newcastle...... up here even the newbies charge the going rate..... i think its a right shame for the punters when they turn up!

If DJs charges are largely based on how long they've been around & how much they know about what they're doing, then I think I need to double my prices!

I sort of agree with that, but when is it acceptable to be classed as a professional?

To me if you make a conscious decision to do something as a living your becoming a professional in that field.
Obviously if you didn't think you were good enough to make the money by doing a professional job you would just carry on doing as a hobby.
In any business you have to do so to an acceptable high standard for it to be a success were your earning an income from it.

Before I decided to go on my own I had done a few gigs with my mate and done all the mixing and chose most of the song choices at different events.
For some reason it worked and worked well for me, with the majority of the venues commenting on what a good night it was.

Am not saying I am the worlds best, make the right decisions all of the time or that I don't have a lot to learn as I do, a great deal.
All I can do is take every new gig as it comes and be as professional as possible by trying to make each gig enjoyable to the best of my ability and ensuring my kit is up to scratch and looks professional. :)

Not everyone wants a top level entertainer.

For some, a 'so-so' disco will do just fine, as all they want is some music and flashing lights but don't want the bother of hiring all the bits themselves.

Be happy that there is such a variation in the clients' requirements, or we'd all be at each other's necks!

I agree mostly with you, but there is the other end of the scale where you get your 'resident dj' who has played the same place for xx amount of years yet only plays the same playlist week in week out and can't adjust to customer requests.

What you pay can have little relationship to what you get.

Without naming names, one of the most expensive discos near me has a DJ who thinks it is fun to take the mickey out of the audience all night instead of just getting on and playing good music. I was eagerly waiting for him to start on me coz I would have chinned him !

We need the £60 Sid's to cover the venues that we wouldn't be seen dead in. The problem arises when Sidney gets ideas above his station, or Daddy's little Princess gets confused and opens Yellow Pages and books him, without asking any proper questions!
People still insist on asking "How much" rather than "What do you offer?" and then think when they get quoted £60 that they've got a bargain!
The problem being, when the penny drops, its too late, and the damage has been done!

Agreed - this is one problem with 'budget' discos - that some aren't making it clear what's (not?) on offer.

But if they do, and don't try to fool the client into thinking they are getting something they aren't, I don't see a problem.

Well to put things into perspective, In Leeds, The functions in social clubs don't tend to pay much at all, mainly £120 Dj's. Tomorrow evening I have a Ruby wedding in a social club for £250 7:30 - 11:30. This proves to me that some people are prepared to pay for a quality DJ.
