View Full Version : Disco is dead! Long live the disco!

I am a mobile DJ.

I sell myself as someone who offers a professional mobile DJ service.

On the Wedding forum I provide advice on only a very small number of Brides ask for assistance in booking a "disco", the majority are looking for a DJ.

When I nose around websites (as we all do) I notice that many of the companies in and around London, the Home Counties and some small pockets across the country are mobile DJ companies. In most other areas they are mobile discos.

As more and more of our clients went to bars and clubs as they grew up has the word "disco" lost its meaning in the mobile sense?

Is a "disco" now just an old phrase that needs to be consigned to a genre or is their plenty of life in the "old dog" yet?

Discuss.

When I saw the title, I thought, Oh God, the medication has worn off. But, yes it is an interesting observation. I wonder how many "DJs" automatically type "Mobile Disco" out of habit.

There's plenty of life in the old dog yet.

Some people might see themselves as mobile DJs. That's who they ARE, but providing mobile DISCOS is what they DO.

Just had a look at my web stats for last month and the top word searched for was Mobile 11.4 % Disco was third with 10.9 % and DJ 7th with 4.4%.

Looking back through previous months, more people use "Disco" as a search word than "DJ".

Now that is interesting because that is not my experience.

I wonder if I have this view because of how I position my business in the marketplace?

I am a mobile DJ who provides an entertainment service.

Firstly, does that mean that if someone contacts you to ask for a mobile disco, you say "I don't offer a mobile discos, I'm a mobile DJ who provides an entertainment service"?

Secondly, what's the difference between a mobile DJ who provides an entertainment service (such as yourself) & a mobile DJ who provides mobile discos (such as myself)?

I'm wondering if some people think of a "DJ" as just the person without equipment and a "Disco" as the whole package i.e. DJ, sound system and lights.

When choosing my company name it was a conscious decision not to use the word disco. I've tried to steer clear of using the word as much as possible in my website too (apart from 1 or 2 small mentions to help with SEO).

For me personally, the word "disco" is a dated term. It's just a personal preference though. There's no right or wrong answer, just preference.

I'm wondering if some people think of a "DJ" as just the person without equipment and a "Disco" as the whole package i.e. DJ, sound system and lights.

I've never had an enquiry that asked for clarification on that point.

Or various lighting packages? :p Sorry Rob :D  :zip:

My webstats concur pretty much with TonyB although I am happy to interchange "disco" and "DJ" when discussing with clients as no-one has yet convinced me they mean anything different to each other.

When I arrived at a wedding last weekend (evening setup) the guests were out on the lawn and on seeing me the bride called me over and introduced me to her friends/family as "our trendy DJ" Apparently, what she meant by that was the service backing and not just the delivery. And that's from someone with a director-level position in a merchant bank in the City. Made me think I'm obviously doing something right :)

Firstly, does that mean that if someone contacts you to ask for a mobile disco, you say "I don't offer a mobile discos, I'm a mobile DJ who provides an entertainment service"?

That's the crux of my point though, people are not ringing me looking for a mobile disco anymore, they are looking to book a DJ.

Secondly, what's the difference between a mobile DJ who provides an entertainment service (such as yourself) & a mobile DJ who provides mobile discos (such as myself)?

Just the wording.

This isn't about a DJ is better than a mobile disco or anything like that, just the terminology.

I'm wondering if some people think of a "DJ" as just the person without equipment and a "Disco" as the whole package i.e. DJ, sound system and lights.

Possibly.

Dare I say that it appears to me that clients with less money to spend tend to look for a mobile disco and those with a larger budget look to book a DJ?

rob1963
08-10-2008, 02:28 PM
At the end of the day, the words or phrases we use to describe ourselves or what we do make no difference to the actual service (which is the important bit), so it's down to the individual as to what words they want to use.

There is no specific difference between a DJ who provides a mobile roadshow, one who provides a mobile entertainment service and one who provides a mobile disco. They are just different words to describe the same thing.

Steve the DJ
08-10-2008, 02:38 PM
That maybe so but it isn't the point of this thread.

You can continue to call yourself a mobile disco until the cows come home but I am finding that clients are searching for the services of a DJ more and more and many (rightly or wrongly) associate a mobile disco with an old fashioned, dated and cheesy service.

We can continue to market ourselves how we see fit but I believe that over the next 5 - 10 years the term "mobile disco" will become consigned to the bin and it is our clients that will drive this change, not us.

I don't very often use the word "mobile" when I speak to clients, disco and DJ I use interchangably and optimise my sites for both (as well as "mobile", as people often still use this when they search)

yourdj
08-10-2008, 03:22 PM
as you can see by my name i thought about that. i have disco in all my literature and site and it comes up high on search stats. it may be a matter of time until the term is dated so this forum name may have to change possibly too?

Staying with the times had never been easy?

As long as people still know what D.I.S.C.O means I guess ill still use.
To me a "DJ" is somebody who turns up for work with possibly nothing more than his music and headphones to play on the in house equipment like in a club or radio station.

Actually I can kind of go along with that. I even make a joke of the word 'disco' on the first page of my website without really realising why. Whilst DJ and disco are for the most part interchangeable when used in conjunction with the word 'mobile' I do think that 'disco' does have a slightly more old-fashioned connotation but not necesasarily a negative one. It's a bit like Rock bands that refer to themselves as Rock 'n' Roll bands - Rock 'n' Roll is an old fashioned term and Rock is the newer and more accurate one but they kinda get used interchangeably.

I've been wresrling with this for the last couple of months, on the one hand I think that my name "Blitz Discos" says exactly what I do but on the other I do tend to think that the word disco is a bit dated and cheesy in some respects and as mentioned before "dj" whatever implys a dj turning up with music only for playing bars clubs etc
I think what I'm needing is a balance between the two to cover all bases and I can use what ever is approprate at the time.

The word 'disco' will remain for a while yet, I'm afraid.

Why?

Because that's what the majority of the booking public want. They e-mail me, phone me up or (as this evening) knock on the door - but all of them want to book a disco. Not a DJ, sound system and lights, but a disco.

OK - it's an old term, but one that's pretty well fixed in the mind, and I for one am quite happy to continue to use it.

Point taken, JayDeeDrinker, but it actually wasn't as sarcastic as you think.

If someone DID phone me up to ask for a DJ, my initial thought WOULD be that they just wanted the DJ himself, so the first thing I'd do would be to ask them something to get clarification.

Why can't people just say what they mean in the first place?

It saves time & is less confusing!

Because most people don't call up DJs very often so they don't really know what they should be asking for.

Just as if you were to call up P&W Rocketdyne and ask them for a new engine for a space shuttle. They'd probably think you were a numpty for not knowing the correct terminology.

Im guessing but probably most calls are Weddings, parties, clubs where they dont have equipment?

Thats always been my experience--

Even if they phone and say we want a DJ rather than a Disco ill bet most of those are for Mobiles--unless you happen to specialise in Nightclubs--theres one or two here I guess that do that.

Or just a case of look at me I'm big, I can belittle prospective clients.

Don't be so ridiculous, Steve. If I belittled my prospective clients, they wouldn't book me...and 2008 has been my best ever year for disco bookings, and by a massive margin, too.

The only belittling around here lately seems to be that done to me by you.

Or another comment you've made that's turned round & bitten you on the bum because somebody has picked up on it.

Absolute rubbish. I made a comment, explained it & stand by it.

You then came along & tried to suggest I'd said something which I didn't, presumably to try & wind me up or get a reaction.

If you were asking for clarification "With or without equipment?" would be far more suitable

Yesterday you were telling me how I should sell my lightshow to customers, now you're telling me what I should be saying to customers on the phone. Someone who owns & runs a successful business being given advice (which wasn't asked for) by someone who does NOT...unbelievable.

I've just re-read the add-ons split post from yesterday, and notice the discussion was going very nicely until you came along in post #10 to argue the toss with me & suggest I deceive my customers. After that, everything went downhill big time, and we all know how it ended up. Nice one, Steve.

You've already started again today by making stupid comments on one of my posts.

It seems to me that lately you're on a mission to have a pop at me on every possible occasion...and I'm not the only person who has noticed this.

You know it will cause a reaction from me and have a negative effect on the harmony on the forum, so it seems a strange way for a forum admin to act.

Exactly, I provide a professional mobile disco service whilst you just offer a mobile disco service... ;)

No, in all seriousness, the first paragraph on the site includes words such as "mobile", "disco", "DJ", "Wedding", "Surrey" etc. for SEO purposes only.

However I have been rewording a new version of my site behind the scenes for a few weeks now and there will be no mention at all of "disco" in the new copy because all of my web stats and feedback shows that my clients are looking for a "Wedding DJ" or "Mobile DJ", not a "disco".

Again this may be because of the type of potential client I pitch for but I very rarely get a call asking for a mobile disco.

I do get lets of enquiries from people though that would like me to DJ at their Wedding or special event.

Let's not get too pedantic about this, I just noticed from were I was sitting that the term "mobile disco" appeared to be disappearing and everyone I spoke to or read on Wedding forums talked about booking a DJ.

I just thought I would ask what others were experiencing. I guess if you sell yourself and refer to yourself as a "mobile disco" then that is how your clients will find you and refer to you, so of course you haven't noticed a change.

Hi FDDJ,

Thanks for the clarification.

You're right about me advertising a mobile service, so that's probably why people talk about a disco rather than a DJ when making contact.

:)

I think quite a bit of your website needs rewording Steve. You've mentioned a few times on various forums about your objections to sub contracting work, yet phrases like this exist on your own website..

The number of guests at your reception will influence the amount of equipment required which may in turn affect our quotation. Most of the DJs that we provide have a suitable amount of equipment to cater for up to 200 guests, some slightly more.

..all sounds a bit misleading to me, unless you've now decided to run as a multi op?

Indeed, that is another one of the reasons why I have been writing new copy.

I had an idea in my head when I first changed the business name to First Dance DJs of becoming a company that sub contracted work out and the original wording reflected that but when I changed my mind (too much hassle it seemed) I started to take it out, obviously I missed some.

Of course there is a big difference between employing DJs and sub contracting work. The former if done properly works very well, the latter is the way that I perceive to be a "bit dodgy", although not necessarily in your case. I am happy to concede that you appear to have your head very much screwed on the right way and it works for some.

My opinion has formed this way because most of the "dodgy DJ" companies that I know off who sub contract work do so in such a sloppy way to the lowest bidder that the end result is we all get tarred with the crappy brush.

..all sounds a bit misleading to me, unless you've now decided to run as a multi op?

Possibly, as I say I thought I had removed all of those references but it still not as misleading as selling your DJ (or disco service) to a client and then sending someone other than yourself to do the job is it?

Now that is what bugs me and no I am not saying you do this but we all know it is happening.

On the other side of the coin and as I have said elsewhere I think subbing is too much hassle for the company owner themselves for what they get, the risk v. reward is too great, because even your best friends let you down occasionally. :(

I am happy to discuss my thoughts over a beer at Darren's Birthday when your not busy as I don't want you to think I am "picking" on you or your business, I am talking about those "rogue" elements out there. It's just hard to get across what you are thinking sometimes on a forum, just ask Rob...:D

I remember back in the 80s Djs called what they offered as "Road shows"
no mention of mobile disco. For example I ran the "sleepless knights roadshow" back then in a previous life.
Anyway for what my opinion is worth to me a disco is a large building with recorded music being played by "a DJ", a great lighting show, a bar and staff etc.
A mobile disco is a DJ or DJs bringing equipment with them and playing music and entertaining at a said venue.
A DJ is the entertainer/the equipment operator.
I run a mobile disco,
I AM a DJ-or that’s what some people call me LOL.

Even before that young man.
I started in 1970, you went to a Disco, if you had a party you employed a Mobile Disco with DJ (chappy that spoke and motivated), or you hired a Mobile Disco with an Operator (sat there playing one track after another with no speech), then within a few years, along came the Roadshows, these had a full compliment of staff to rig and de-rig (and don't forget to ask if the venue has a 30amp outlet:)), the bigger / better ones did the european tour, mostly military bases. These forward thinking DJs either then went into "local" radio or went to the likes of Julianias or Baccuhas (sp), others started audio and lighting companies, so on and so forth.
In those days "DJs" got on with, didn't whinge and charged what they were worth. The ones that I knew had great customer care, looked after their kit and had it checked over regularlary (sp).
They were the days when Men were Men and boys weren't allowed anywhere near the kit.

Rob, as I've said on another thread, I'm not going to let you draw me into any more of your petty little squabbles.

You are entitled to your opinions as is Badger, but the pair of you seem to have some sort of persecution complex.

All is fine & dandy until somebody questions what you've said & then you go off on one.

If you have such a hard time on this forum there are plenty of others you could try DJU, MDJF, MDOL to name but 3. Some may be more to your taste some may not. Some are ruled over with a rod of iron, some are so free form it's akin to anarchy. Try them out, then we'll see if this forum (& it's staff) is so bad.

For the record, I have NO ISSUES with you, other than your tendency to over react when somebody's opinion differs from yours & they question you.

I'm pleased to hear it, as I have no intention to draw you into ANYTHING.

You are entitled to your opinions as is Badger, but the pair of you seem to have some sort of persecution complex.

With all due respect, that sounds very much like another of your unsubstantiated comments posted with the intention of getting a reaction.

I have no persecution complex whatsoever. However, I object to repetitive untrue comments from a few quarters, which seem to be posted with the sole intention of winding me up.

The "I think I'm always right & everyone else is wrong" is a great example of this. It's not true, I've never said it IS true & yet the broken record continues from certain quarters.

For the record, I can only think of 3 things which I probably know more about that almost everyone else on this forum, and mobile discos certainly isn't one of them.

I will say it again. I do NOT think I am always right and I do NOT think everyone else is always wrong...but I'm sure this won't stop the same accusations from the same few people.

All is fine & dandy until somebody questions what you've said & then you go off on one.

That all depends on the situation.

When people try to tell me how to run my business, and how I should sell add ons, and how much I should charge for add ons in a thread which I started on a COMPLETELY different subject, then yes...I will go off on one.

Also, if someone says I'm deceiving my customers, then yes...I will go off on one.

Apart from that, whenever someone questions what I've said, I will do my best to answer their query & to explain why I have the views I do or follow the practices I do. If I'm not very good at doing that, then I'm sorry.

There you go again...I've NEVER said I have such a hard time on this forum!

Just to clarify, there are a few people who I think DO give me a hard time, and I'm not the only person who has noticed that. However, I have to weigh that up against the positive value of the forum as a whole.

I'm fully aware there are other forums. I've even had PMs from people recommending certain other forums, which they say are more friendly than this one. However, as long as the positive aspects of this forum outweigh the negative ones for me & my business, I will probably remain here.

For the record, I have NO ISSUES with you, other than your tendency to over react when somebody's opinion differs from yours & they question you.

People's opinions differ from mine & they question me all the time, and I don't think I over react at all. I just do my best to answer their questions & explain why I have the views I do, but I'm sorry if I don't do that very well.

I'm not perfect, and neither is anyone else... In fact I'd struggle to find a regular poster who I couldn't say SOMETHING negative about, so let's move onwards & upwards, shall we?

I go back longer than most which is why it is Banana Power TRAVELLING DISCOTHEQUE and always has been. The term mobile disco came anlong and it is the description which most of the public use.

Back in the mid 80's I formed a charity called Disco Aid which ran on a shoestring and raised many thousands of pounds from dj's and discos all over the country. Because it was a success the great and the good of the industry decided to take it over and it was decided that Disco Aid was an old fashioned and cheesey name (this was 20 years ago) and they renamed it the Dance Aid Trust. From then on it continued for a few more years and raised more money but with a higher set of expenses but fizzled out some time ago. I think it should have stayed as Disco Aid.

You can market yourself in all sorts of ways and by calling "A" "B" you may succeed with a particular market or persuade some people that you are worth money. Good luck to you but at the end of the day a spade is a spade and a rose by any other name still smells as sweet.
