what time do you turn your lights on?

Hi All

I was chatting to a friend last night and discussing what time you would turn the disco lights on?

I said for a function 7pm-1 i'd probably turn them on just after the buffet , about 9:30 ish then slowly build them up

IE: turn on just a couple at a time till eventually when the disco is in full swing all the lights are going.

I was just interested to see what everyone else does

Depends on the event.

For primary school gigs, i don't take much anyway so i usually have them all on all the time. For birthdays with buffets, i do the same as you.

Every gig is different, depends on the talking / dancing ratio.

I set the mood early on with simple stuff and then add the moving lights and mad stuff later on when the party is really starting up, if it's a wedding it's usually after the first dance.

As for getting bored???..... Do many people really take that much notice of the lights when they are dancing around? I doubt it.

If they arent taking any notice of the lights then why have them ? lol

I change the lights to suit the mood of the music.
Low level lights for slow songs and lots of flashing lights for fast music.

Most people are having a dance. Flashing colours are all they see. The lights from the dancefloor are totally different to what we see from behind the decks etc...

I can't imagine many people dancing and thinking "Oh, come on Mr DJ, I am getting a tad bored with the patterns you are using..." and so on.

I dont like discos with loads of flashing lights as the light just ends up as a mush of light. I think its better to cycle the lights and be able to see the patterns on the floor and walls. i.e. Impossibled for a while then my triple derby light for a while. UV cannon on only for a slow song etc etc

Too right. the best gigs i have done have been with two lights only.

At the start of the evening I have the lights set on a slow moving oriantation and then build them up as the night goes on. For the 1st dance all the lights are set to slow moving pink colours.

I don't believe in having the lights going at full tilt when everybody is just getting into the venue and talking to each other as it just become an annoyance and then ruins the wow factor of the disco later on in the evening.

I turn 4 lights on at beginning of night then an extra 2 when the clients coughs up an extra £75 :D :D :p :D :D

As others have said I think it depends on the gig.

I dont really use any lights. I may use my par cans and get my roadie to play about with the colours. That soon gets people looking and pointing and going oooo, ahhhhh. You get the picture. lol

I do mostly weddings.

No lights until first dance.

Pinspots on slow sequence for first dance(s).

Other lights on straight after that when I speed things up, which is usually somewhere around 8.30pm to 9.00pm.

I rotate my lighting dependant on people on the floor None of this coffing up for extra lights stuff. I also kill lights for certain types of music R & B being the most obvious. Dancing in the dark is best whereas top tunes would kick in the laser even smoke at certain venues

I tend to stick them on a couple of tracks before the first dance, just on a slow patterm.

Unless of course, they pay extra for a couple of scanners, in which case I can program them to move around the room and the ceiling, highlighting certain parts etc. But most people won't pay extra for a couple of extra lights :bag:

Childrens Party i have my lights on full from the word go.

Most other gigs i will put 1 or 2 lights on "static gobo" to set the mood at the start of the night and bring the others in when the party starts to build up.

Most of them all of the time(exept the strobes only brief flashes every 5 mins or so. People moan about aching eyes)

I tend to have static lighting at the beginning of the evening and once people are up for dancing I will start to put more on and start sound activating.
