Northern Soul??

Just had a client meeting to discuss music and they threw this into the mix! They had been to a wedding a couple of months ago and the DJ played a Northern Soul set and they loved it. I said it was no problem as to act the professional but truthely i have not got a clue!!

Please can somebody help me?? :confused: :confused:

There are some real classics out there and there are people on here better educated on Northern Soul than I am. You can always find Northern Soul boxsets quite cheap. What I did was go on to I-tunes and look at the most popular ones and I got them. 'Out on the floor', 'Do I love you, indeed I do', 'There's a ghost in my house' are 3 that spring to mind but as I said, one of the other guys will be able to help I'm sure.

It's always nice to be able to do something different. Have a good one.

The North of Watford albums are a great start. I think there's a Best Northern Soul album also. Oops, sorry, it's an Ultimate.

I'm merely competent In Northern. Compared to the true followers, I know nothing. It's a great style of music, go with the classics, and you can't fail. Don't forget to use Tamla to get in and out of the set. Quite a lot of of the Tamla output is classed as Northern. :D

Although, purists might not consider some of those to be true Northern Soul, so best to check with the client or requester. I rarely get asked for it, and when I do it seems to divide the crowd with at least half not even knowing the tracks!

I've got more than one gig this year wanting NS... an ask to a new acquaintance of mine - the President of Cambridge Scooter Club, who also does a bit of retro DJing for them - and they are more than a little partial to Tamla / Northern - has sent me on to this 2 CD set, which has just about every track mentioned in this thread... :D

The Best Northern Soul All Nighter - Ever! - although the one I got 'only' has 23 tracks per CD.

Got our first Northern Soul night next Friday, tickets sold = 78 out of 130, the gig is for 4 hours and only got about 2 hours worth of tracks..:eek:, the landlord of the club has asked us to bring plenty of "talcum powder" :confused: must be a traditional ritual or something?????

There has been quite a bit of interest and talk about northern soul on here, even in the short time i have been on the forum. This is a genre I particularly love and play as much as I get the chance (or find someone to pay me to play it that is) :p

I found this rather useful link to the 'Northern Soul Top 500' compiled by non less than the highly regarded and respected Northern Soul DJ 'Kev Roberts'

It's not a new list - in fact it was published in 2000 - however although there are 'new discoveries' and changes in poplarity of certain songs the Northern Scene does not 'update and renew' itself in quite the way other music genres do

So IMHO this info is still relevant and valid as of today

Here is a list of the Top 500 Northern Soul songs according to Kev Robert, followed by another 100 'bubbling under' tracks

And finally there is a list of 20 CDs that are commercially available and contain between them most of the top 500 songs on the list

I hope this is useful to any of you interested in learning more about, or playing, this genre of music

Take a look at the following two albums:

Move on up - Volume 1 (The very best of Northern Soul)
Move on up - Volume 2 (The very best of Northern Soul)

That should give you a pretty decent guideline of what to put on a NS playlist. As has already been mentioned you won't go far wrong with adding some Tamla Motown in there as well.

I did loads of NS gigs back in the seventies and those albums have a decent selection on them.

Also, might be worth watching this to help you get a feel for it ;)
