Celerons are the cheapest and nastiest. Go for a Core2 Duo. And with over 2GB ram if with Vista. and you should be fine!

Vistas ok when you get used to its little niggles. To me its faster than X. Some will disagree. The one that Dave has pointed out seems to be a good one.

If you go for this, make sure that the USB ports are NOT next to the fan as this will actually burn the connectors off the motherboard.

I recommend this dell.

I wouldn't!

In my humble opinion, Dave's link is better, but I'd be inclined to add an external HD, as the 160Gb may not all be available for storage. Mine isn't.

has your experiance with vista and xp, been on the same machine with same amount of ram and processor/clock speed ?

if not then its not a "fair test" :D

i find xp better than vista and yes it was a fair test.

most probley just a trial, if you just using it for broadcasting buy something off ebay with xp on, and 1gb ram, as you dont need to run major programmes, well when i was broadcasting on shoutcast when i were younger i was running a show from a machine with under 1gb ram with pentium 4 processor

Ill rather buy new with a warranty etc, my pc anti-virus is almost up so ill buy a 2 pc disc.

If it's just for broadcasting I'm sure the original one would be fine. I, however, use mine as my main playout system so personally wouldn't get a Celeron processor, for me it's got to be dual core intel processor. I also have 4 GB RAM and free Sophos anti virus from work. :D

Just for the record, I have a work Laptop with similar spec to my own Laptop. Work one has XP and home laptop has Vista. I can't see any difference with performance speeds and having used the Vista Laptop for over 6 months, have never had a single problem :D

Im going to be using it for: website editing for my sites, broadcasting dj shows and just to store some music on, nothing to clog it up, just gunna read some reviews on it.

Ah! My external HD suggestion was based on using it for MP3 storage, so not relevant. Sorry.

talking of laptops anyone know of any that do extended desk top where you can open something on the main screen and drag it accross to the other screen

All of them.

Vectis

All of them.

Just to add a little more depth...

The majority of laptops have 'extended desktop' capability.

If the device has an external video port (VGA, DVI, DisplayPort or in the case of Apples the mini-DVI (but NOT S-Video)) then chances are it'll support extended desktop.

In Windows, go to control panel -> display properties and choose the appropriate options. In MacOS click the monitor icon and then 'Detect Displays' (but if it's connected it probably found it already anyway).

Job done.

Most laptops allow dual screens. That's the easy bit as they just go into the mode when you plug in a screen. If you wanted it to mirror the screen then that's the hard way. You have to change a lot of settings.

Dual Core is the older version of the Dual processors. Core 2 Duo is the newer models.

You def need 2gb RAM.
My Vista PC was much faster with the extra memory.

Having 2GB of ram at poor speeds is worse than 1GB at good speeds. (ram Clock speeds)

Not if the PC is having to swap out programs/data to a hard disk !
