Hya whatever you do don't buy an "advent" they are absolutely rubbish.
I bought one for around £500 last year and the build quality is a joke, i.e. keys keep coming off had 2 new motherboards, new ram, the power supplies get really hot and pack up and the system itself has big issues in getting hot.
I used to find that when typing you would get to 4-5 lines worth and the cursor would jump to the beginning so started typing back at the begining of the text, really irritating.

It's fair to say though that Advent is a budget brand. The specification in question will be fine for web surfing, emailing, writing up the odd document etc. but it's no powerhouse. It won't cope well with graphics-intensive work and the screen probably won't be up to it in either case. It's not a gaming machine nor is it likely to suffer the rigours of life on the road too well if you're thinking of DJing with it, although it would probably run the lower-end software packages quite well it would almost definitely need an external soundcard.

There's a lot of competition in the Circa-£300 bracket; look out for a respected brand and ideally a CPU that isn't a Celeron and you'll be laughing.

If its for music playout I would look at USB players personally.

Otherwise I would look at Acer.

I bought one for my son about 4 years ago and its been all round the world ( mainly China) abused and misused but its still going strong.:D

I have an Acer I bought a couple of years ago for music backup only---thats been perfect although not used a lot.

Comets, Tescos, Currys all sell them.

Hya mate I don't give that kind of statement unless its on good grounds.
As it happens it was my Mrs. who actualy bought it me for chrimbo last year as I was originally going to use a laptop to DJ.
I new as soon as I opened the box just how crap it was but there isn't much you can say when its a gift :o

Being PC/Laptop technician I know how to look after the kit, but honestly even with minimum use things started to pack up and fall off.
You will find loads of parts on eBay for advents as everybody has the same problems so when they eventually die completely there rest gets stripped and sold on to try to recoup some back.

Next time your in currys/pc word have a look at them and you will see very thin keys that do pop off and after putting back on a few times if not carefull the minute clips on the back of the keys snap of so unable to fix them on then and requires a new key, but the rest can only really be seen by using one.
Mine was one of the top of the range at the time so I dred to think what the more budget ones are like.

I got an Acer, and while I've seen better machines( which not surprisingly cost more money) it's fine for what I paid. With hindsight, I perhaps should have paid a little more, but hey ho.

I'd go for 2 Gig of Ram.

The laptop was not for djing.....it was simply for email, internet and for me to use to save me using mine as i use mine for djing.....

I will just keep looking...wasnt sure if it was a good deal or not and hadnt heard of advent before....

To be honest, if you not going to do any hardcore gaming but just simply wish to use it for internet, email, and some word processing then go for it. :)

I'm looking for a laptop too, for general use. Not looking to pay that much though, as I only really need to browse the net, use MS Office and such like. Although it will need to be compatible - USB, XP etc. Any suggestions, write them down there below... :)

Some of the phone companies are now offering laptops.......then charge the phone to the business (I think you can do that)......jobs a good un.

There is one slight problem with that. From one shop I looked at you are paying £25 a month. Its a contract for 24 months. That makes it a £600 laptop which is not all that great.

Much better buying a cheap £300 laptop and leave it at that.

OK....but then how much is the cost of a phone as well.....plus you can make calls as well.:)
