Possible new job but....

... I need some books.


I am thinking about taking a new career in becoming an electrician. It's time to move on as my current job is a dead end and not worth doing no more (as in my day job).

I have already got an appointent book up for friday at 12 mid-day to have a chat about what direction I could take.



My question is.

Are they are any good books that that are worth getting. I really want to get a head start with some reading.

Any help would be great. :)

I started an electrical course about 6 months ago-Learn from home in your own time with tutor support.They supply all books and you go on 1 week training sessions at a centre which has an exam at the end of each week.It cost £6500 for whole course which is a fair bit of cash but you a fully qualified at the end of it.They also do a installment scheme but my advise would be to get a personal load from a bank as their APR is high.Well worth doing.Company I use is Electrical Skills

They send a Rep out who will do a short test.Then give the sales pitch.
They have been pretty good with me so far.


Books are supplied with course, But if you don't want pay for a full course and do it in parts when money available teh books I have to use at the moment are:
17th Edition wiring Regs
17th edition onsite guide
CITB essential electrics
Brian Scaddon electrical installation work 5th edition
and Bpec Part P defined scope
Bpec Part P Full Scope
Part P buliding Regs

That's the same company I have decided to go with.

I knew it was going to be expensive but didnt know it was going to be that much. :o

Do they offer a payment plan or is it the whole lot in one go???

Hi Tom You can pay in installments.It's a loan but I found the apr high.I did agree to the loan from them but shopped around and got aloan for 3 yrs from TSB with a lower apr I currently pay £227 a month.The course takes as long or short as you like depends on time you have to study and how quickly you can take things in the recommend 2yrs max but some I know have done it in 9months.

I did have a look at this but tbh I dont think I can do this. I need to earn a certain amount of money a month to pay the bills. Even if I miss a day, that can throw of the whole month and the next month. :(

There is no way I can get a loan atm. Just taken one out a few months back to buy myself a new car. And when I even got that I was given the most I could get. :(

Not quite that simple. :)
Each revision book has self assesments in which you have to do and email results to a tutor.
Once a Section has completed(which can involve 4 books) you have a 1 week practical at a test centre which has an exam at the end of it which tests on the theory you have read at home and the practical at the test centre.
There is a lot of reading involved as the theory is very important and you need the qualifications before you can go out alone and actual do the work.That is why I have gone for an electricians mate job to gain some field experiance whilst doing the theory.

Had the meeting today and it went very well.


They have offered me a loan to fund the course which is a nice £170 a month.

I have accepted and should be receiving everything in 10 days time. I'm so excited. I can't wait to start learning and change my life around. :D:D:D

yup.. good to hear, then all you need to do is get a job.

how much is examination fees ?

The whole course costs £6950. Everything in the course from text books to exams are all included. If I need help I can phone them up for help and and advice on anything I need during office hours.

As for getting a job. They did say, give it a year and then apply for a job within the electrical industry. As I would of been learning the job for a year, I can prove to them that I am worthy of taking me on, if you get me. :)

I said that my other halfs uncle does all the domestic electrics and that's what I wanted to do so he put me on the professional course of that. The full monty really.

I was thinking about taking the PAT test course but I think its something like £1000. We will what happens when I finish the course. :)

Little update.

Should be getting my books this week so I can start learning.


Also on my confirmation letter it does say that when I pass the course, I will be able to pat test equipment. Just need to buy the machine. :D

Free pat test for me and a good deal for my buddies on here. ;) :D
