Hello everyone,
I've been lurking on the MDD forum for a little while now, and found some interesting topics that have really hit home the importance of such a place to communicate ideas and thoughts about how to conduct a professional mobile disco business.
I'll give you a little background to my life, and how i've ended up becoming a mobile DJ.
it all started about 5 years ago, when i went to university. i had always enjoyed music and playing around with electrical equipment and gadgets. I had the fantastic opportunity to join the university Entertainments Crew - which was tasked with running events in the Union - be it in the 1100 capacity venue, or in one of the smaller venues. This meant i got to play around with very very very expensive and state of the art lighting and sound rigs, with the knowledge that I was learning important skills. One of my roles was also "Djing" (CD Changing to you and me) but i gradually got good at it, and knew what music to play, and how to carry a crowd and keep them dancing from 10pm until close at 1-2am (cheese cheese cheese and some chart - oh and quite often a bit of Chesney Hawkes). I also quite enjoyed getting drunk on a thursday night and singing my heart out at Karaoke - i would be there from 7pm an hour before it started and hog the karaoke until close
Upon Graduating, I tried desperately to get a job with a big lighting or sound equipment hire firm in Edinburgh, and failed miserably. After a year and a bit i was still wanting to tinker around with expensive equipment. so in March I decided to start my own mobile disco and Karaoke business. and here I am today, starting out and slowly getting my name out there. I wanted to do it properly, and i have fully PAT tested equipment and PLI insurance.
I had to economise with some of my equipment, (buying a PA system i could afford rather than a nice HK, D&B or Martin audio one - but that will be my next purchase in the new year) but all the money I currently make goes straight back into new equipment. I know good audio and lighting equipment when i see it, and have spent more money than i care to remember lately on new equipment, such as a Le Maitre Neutron Star Hazer.
i hope i can provide the perspective from a NEWBIE into the mobile scene, but also provide my expertise with DMX, DIMMERS, MULTICORES, XLR, or any other knowledge i have.
