Stolen Identity

Justy got a call from my bank to notify me of suspicious purchase activity over the last few days - none of which were by me. As I'm naturally suspicious about these kind of calls, and I didn't trust that the phone call was from my bank, so I terminated the call and called back the official number on their website. It turns out the original call was from them.

I'm usually EXTREMELY carefull when using my credit/debit cards. I never purchase via online forms on websites, instead I always call up the company to order through a sales rep....yet someones still managed to use my details for fraudulant purchases. :eek:

Anyone ever had their identity stolen?

Yep there's some bloke on T4 masquerading as me & the Welsh number 11.

Seriously though, a mate of mine had one of his cards cloned & his account emptied. Loads of purchases made in Barnet & Watford. It was easy enough for him to prove he wasn't using the card however, because he used it 3 times in the same period......

My other half got her card cloned and she apparently had been helping the farmers......

Sorry to hear about this, Shaun.

To be honest, I think you're probably safer ordering online through a secure server (with an address that begins https), rather than phoning the company to order stuff...where there could easily be a cross line or where the person could make a note of your credit card details and sell these sell onto someone else.

I'm pleased to say this has never happened to me, although I believe it's the fastest growing crime at the moment.

Some banks offer insurance policies against this for around £60-£80 a year. A word of advice: Don't waste your money on them, because if money is taken from your account fraudulently the bank HAS to refund you anyway.

I am in the process of changing banks now because of this. Without online banking, these people would of taken all my money from the bank. :( :mad: .

Yesterday my friend went to by a Sat Nav from halfords and his credit card was declined, So he tried it again and it still declined and this was a new credit card. He phoned up Barclay's who told him that 2 transactions had been made one for £27.00 which had been processed and then another one for £14 which had been declined.

He is now opening a dispute with Barclays and the fraudulent team are now investigating.

I went to my bank and opened another account just for online/phone orders,
I told them to put a note on the account that no transactions were to be paid unless i had transfered the exact amount into the account up to two days earlier, with online banking it is easy to do your own transfers,
and it protects your main account

All my cards were stolen over a month ago :(

Haven't reported it yet though, cos whoever's got them is spending less than the missus !! :D :D

Did you use your card while you were at DJSN?

Prepaid debit cards are starting to become more popular. With one of these, if your card is stolen then you only lose what you loaded onto it.

The only down side with this is that it takes up to four days to top up via online banking. Topping up in a shop is immidiate but there is a small charge (in my case 3%).
The one I use is 'Splashplastic'. There are a lot of different providers available at the moment and some may be better suited to people who use their card a lot ie. some have a higher annual charge with no transaction charges.
