Speaker stands

time for me to look like wally but please remember im a newbie. why do you use stands and is it worth while getting a pair for my 15" cabs.

YES! it is worth it. Sound is directed at peoples heads and not there feet and it looks better.

Hya Dean, speaker stands are one of those items that are best to have just in case.
I don't tend to use mine like I should, basically as am not confident in just using the tops I have at the moment without the bass bins, so always try to fit the bass bins in.
Once I eventually upgrade the speakers ill tend to just use the tops on the speaker stands in smaller venues.

Most people seem to put tops high up and bass on the floor.

Or NO if you're Theo, or using my big cabs. ;) :D :D

This is a huge subject, guaranteed to polarise opinion, and cause huge rows. ;)

As to why, to have them on the floor means that you loose all of the sound into the mass of bodies and its absorbed. If you put them up, like others have said then the sound can go over the top and you dont have to drive your speakers so hard (or invest in more powerful ones).

But very low frequencies dont get heard but more get felt through the floor.

A bass speaker works better on a floor as it gives a better impedance matching to the air, and the ground and so better efficiency.

subs allways on the floor and speakers on stands or on poles mounted on top of the subs!!

Yes very good that's the ones I use, have a look at their other stuff as well the mini deck stand looks a good buy , although not all the savings are not as much as they claim, nether the less worth a look.

Stands everytime, unless you are space limited. How would you feel when a punter puts a pint on your cab? Or as happened at my new year gig, coats, hats, gloves, etc...

My speakers sound and look better up on stands. They do lose a little bass compared to floor mounted but that's where a sub comes in, ;)

Yeh I agree they are quoting inflated shop prices but decent prices on the deck stands etc. just bought the carry bag for the 4` stand

I was always told that ideally, the highs should be at forehead level and the lows at er....crotch level.
I have JBL's which are full range so they are too big to go on stands so it's nice when there is a stage to put them on. If there isn't then I just deal with it. Sometimes I use the DB tech's and put them on stands.

Agreed.

With speakers on stands the sound can be at ear level, which seems to make sense.

Also, speakers on the floor look really naff IMO.

Rob, depends if they are speakers that are supposed to be on stands. Full range JBL's are floor speakers anyway...
