New Year's Eve

So come on what are we all doing for New Year's Eve? Where are we all going? Anywhere interesting or just to the local down the road? Is anybody going somewhere peculiar or doing something a little unique?

I will start off: I'm doing a private house party for around 80 guests. I have been told they have budgeted £1000 for fireworks!:eek: so should be fun:) Plenty of Motown and cheese so I'm sorted :D

I'm actually looking forward to NYE this year, as I will be taking my family with me. I'm working in a pub which is attached to one of my regular Hotels and they have a licence so that kids can be there, as it's covered by the Hotel. The manager told me that some of the staff will be bringing their families, so I asked if I could bring mine and he said yes!

I also have 2 x bookings in Hotels and 2 in golf clubs.

I'm doing something VERY unique on New Years eve...for the first time since I was a teenager I'm not working.

I will be driving over to my Mum & Dad's place & spending the night with them & my brother. I'm also staying the night, so I can drink, and I'm really looking forward to it.

My parents are in their late seventies & not particularly healthy, so it might be my last chance to spend New years eve with them. Sometimes it's not just about the money, even if, like me you DO work full time in the entertainment industry.

Whatever the rest of you are doing, and whether you're working or not, have a fantastic night.

We are going to a buffet/dance in the village hall with some friends. It is only the 2nd time in 38 years I have not worked. Good job I have already paid for the honeymoon as usually NYE pays for a weeks holiday.

Like Darren I am fortunate to be able to take my family this year. I am in a local golf club. Not great pay but free food, drink and taxi home for the three of us so am very happy. Can also setup early and pack away the next morning. Also have 2 in hotels and a village pub. Going out for less this year than last but the 'package' suits me more :beer1: :D

I am working at my local from 8pm - 2am and it is a James Bond themed night. Now, that may not sound that interesting but it will actually be great because everyone is getting suited and booted so there will be loads of Punks, Indie Kids, Rockers etc all 'poshed' up for the night in their local with great music. My missus will be there too and it should be a great night.

Where abouts in Battle? I used to live there when I worked as General Manager of The George Hotel.

I'm doing 9-1 at my local hotel. Not looking forward to it, to be honest. The crowds for most of the Xmas parties have been pretty small, and many of them have been very hard work. NYE is always pretty low in numbers for their dinner dance, so I dread to think what'll happen this year.

I'm doing a bar with a good friend of mine so it will be good fun and also a change from humping all the gear around. I have a few friends and family coming down to the bar so it's going to be great to spend the new year with my family and friends.

Im at my fav pub - Old Nicks in Horncastle - Pays not good but I get plenty of bookings there and if a band lets em down im there 1st call they make to see if im free. great landlord n landlady and excellent staff - they know how to make ya feel special

Got a nice local one this year only about 5 miles from my house in Moorwood Moor. Very nice up market pub / bistro type affair. Crowd are all 35 upwards so been told to give a good 70's / disco night. Looking forward to it as it could lead to some more work next year.

In fact I think I'll pop up there tonight to say hello and have a pint ;)

Im working in one of my regular venues 8pm till 2.The good thing is that i am not required to start untill just before the bells because its the celidh band on untill around midnight.
I have agreed a reduced price so that i can bring my family along.This will be the first time in many years that i can say that we are all going to be together at hogmany.

I haven't done NYE since 2000. Me & a DJ mate held our own 2k gig, so it wasn't exactly working, so it was the year before last time I gig'd.
I seem to recall charging around £350 then. It's less than £200 this year:eek: :eek:
But it's a place I do the odd gig in in the town centre. Nice pub, no real problems, know the gaffer quite well and it's normally a good gig, so NYE should be great.
Only decided about two weeks ago to do it. Kept umming and arrring about it, but thought "what the heck":D

Taking this year off; original booking for NYE folded due to lack of ticket sales (shocker!) and the only other enquiries have been pubs. I don't do pubs, especially NYE.

So this year we're getting the whole family together and taking over one corner of a really good Chinese restaurant locally and having the feast of all feasts washed down with copious amounts of the golden stuff :o

I’m doing a gig for a local ish pub, I’ve done a few Christmas parties for them this year, many of them have been very hard work with very few people due to lack of advertising.
I'm hoping NYE crowd will be more than last week, 4 people! :)

Well I have just done my new years mix.

Big Ben Chimes, and for the last 10 seconds a man's voice counts down 10 seconds over the last chime.

Then it breaks into Auld Lang Syne with Noddy Holder shouting "Happy New Year"..followed by Land of Hope and Glory..and then by Rule Britannia and then Do the Congo. All mixed together with a few effects so all I have to do is hit play!

BTW this is not my choice...its what the lady has requested. A bit over the top if you ask me:)

Interesting how many are doing the 'local pub for not much money' thing.

yep im in a small pub holds about 70 people and doing it for £60.00 - why you may ask - they book me a lot midweek and if bands cancel im there 1st port of call.

also my drinks are free and a nice 2 course meal is provided if I want it. and a bed as well if i feel to tired to drive home.

i can earn a lot more and have turned down loads this year why - because im with my friends, i feel as if im wanted and the crowd make sure i have a good time as well.

after i finished xmas eve i was advised that there was 20 pints on the slate for me which customers had paid for, because they felt i was doing a good job and often play there requests promptly. as a nice bonus outa the 27 bookings ive had there this year i have picked up 9 full price bookings for 2009 :):)

I'm Back at my local labour club for the 7th year' love it there can't go wrong 7'30 til 1 usually a couple of hours with the kids for party dances and games and then the rest of the night a good mixed bag from 60s to present day' The place holds around 450 and it's usually full by 8pm' It does get very hot there though.

Back at one of the only 'pubs' I accept work at in Rutland. The owners are fantastic people, the regulars are a lot of fun, never seen any drunks falling out at the end of the night, we always feel totally welcome, we get fed and 'watered' throughout the night and will no doubt be back again next year.

It's worth the hour and a half drive to be in such a great place with such a friendly crowd. Been booked since April after a great NYE party last year and a St George's night - landlady booked us without asking 'how much'.

Amazed that so many people are working for reduced rates. Well, I will admit I've done a couple of private gigs at discount rates during November and December just to keep working and keep the name out there.

Not that amazing, surely. :confused: Many of us are foregoing the big earners, and doing local gigs with bonuses like taking family, or a bed for the night. In my case it's a Social Club which gives me a lot of work all year round. I think lots of us don't want the hassle of a long travel and setup for an unknown venue. ;)

I know what you mean. It's good to be able to look forward to the event without arriving at an 'unknown venue' and finding it's going to be a tough gig. Yes Rob, well as I'm working tonight, then jumping into the car for an hours drive to Sheffield tomorrow for lunch with my daughter and her Outlaws, then dash across to Hull to "assist" Twinspin with a karaoke in the afternoon, and a drive home, you'll have to have an extra drink for me :beer1: :beer1: , as for the first time in years I shall be sober on New Years Day. ;) ;)

Well mine went well at a local pub / bistro type affair. Managed to set up in the afternoon then went home (cue the your kit wasn't insured replies ;) ), went back at 9pm for a 930 start.

Alas they were still eating.......until 1045pm :eek: .. All the better for me as I just played some background swing stuff. Kicked in to "disco mode" around 1115pm then through until 130am.

Nice crowd, not your usual pub as they'd paid £65 per head just for the meal :eek:

Landlord helped pack the rig up, load the wagon and was home for 2.15, hopefully pick up some more work from it as a few cards went out .

One bloke said he'd defo book me for his wedding if I played "Club Tropicana", so made him wait right til the end , actually my encore tune :D :D

Mine went really well - was a 'bring your own food and drink' event - so had a bunch of youngsters trying to drink as much Fosters as quick as they could. Security kept an eye on them all evening and they vanished in time.

Only hilarious moment was when I had a girl who had been quite polite all evening towards me came onto the stage and said "Play some Madonna" and I said "after midnight" as I was working my way up to the NY countdown. She came back onto the stage after midnight and said "Play some Madonna" and I asked her if she had any manners. She begrungingly said "....please...." and I decided I wasn't going to play it anyway as I was in party track mode after midnight to bring in 2009. Also I'd played Madonna earlier anyway.

Was leaving the venue and heard her saying "He was a cr*p DJ as he didn't play Madonna" and I heard someone reply with "Oh shut your mouth - he was brilliant as you danced to everything he played since 10 o'clock and you wouldn't know a bad DJ from a good one anyways....".

I just laughed as I drove off the carpark.

Booked for NYE 2009 already!
