i need a break

Just lately i havent been enjoying discos that much. Ive kept thinking to myself sell up and move on. But ive said that many times but never did.

So ive decided I dont want to sell my equipment. So im thinking get January out of the way and then take a break from discos for 6 months.

in the last 8 days both gigs ive done have been a nightmare. I had one of my speakers damaged on christmas eve and not getting a payout from insurance company wether i get a payment out of the venue under terms and conditions is another matter.

New years eve. All a bunch of snobs who look down their nose at ya some wanted smoochy music some wanted dancy music couldnt win with either crowds.

I've had a few like that, always seems to happen in December which is quite strange.

Just go for smaller jobs to remind yourself how intimate DJing can be and how much you are appreciated - should get you back on course for the meaty stuff.

Hi John sorry to hear of your problems with speakers ect.
Im sure that at some point in our dj carrer we have all felt like saying to uorselves i am not enjoying this,It does not help when you get one bad gig after another it does dent your confidence.

Please dont rush into a decision about quitting to soon as you will regret it.Your phone\emails will soon be coming in with bookings for you,my advice would be to pick and choose the gigs that you want\the ones that you have repeat bookings from will be the good ones,this will hopefully get your confidence in your dj ability skills back to where the should be.

I am sure that whatever decision you make will be the right one for you and your family.

I'm not going to quit with the discos. I think i just need a break from them. So if i take about 6 months out or so. Then come back to it later this year.

I think last night kinda annoyed me because the hotel staff were rude and arrogant at my residency.

Tbh i really didnt want to do it. But i cant let them down.

and i asked them a question of what course is been served at the moment just to give myself a good idea of when i will be starting. They were very sarcastic towards me. I didnt say nothing to them. But i felt like it though.

Most of the staff are somewhat ignorant you try to be friendly with them but it doesnt work they just dont want to know.

The General Manager Neil who is probably the only one in the entire hotel who you can have a laugh with. Not to the point where it disrupts either of the work we are doing.

But he walked out hiself last night at 9:00pm. He sent a fax to the head office telling them he's had enough and he's going.

Now we didnt start while half past 10. So we was downstairs in the reception. When the general manager come through and i said to him. Your not doing a runner already are you Neil.

He then told me that he wont be back he's just handed his notice in. He then told me that he thought all his colleagues were the most miserable staff he's ever worked with.

I can back him on that. My notice goes down today when i pick the gear up. They havent got another function now while 14th february. Im happy so say i wont be there for that.

I understand you taking a break if i'm honest.

Take a few months out, see how it goes. If you're raring to go again, then great! If not, maybe take a bit more time out? Or as previously mentioned, start doing some smaller gigs, that way it'l get you ready for the bigger gigs again. It's a bit like what i've done/am doing.

I feel your pain, twinspin. My residency has been a pain in the arse this year. Great staff, great venue but pretty small crowds for the Christmas party nights and for NYE (when they also had a casino in the next room, so found myself playing to less than a dozen people at one stage), so each one has been pretty hard work.

My only advice would be not to burn any bridges. The arses you kick now may be the ones you'll have to kiss later!

Also, having been a hotel GM myself, I know that the company will want to know why he's quit like that, and will investigate and act accordingly.

at the moment ive walked out of a hotel residency. thats not whats peed me off. i feel better about that. But at the moment i dont feel better about the disco job because i was put on at that residency. I did everythng to help that hotel. yet they never helped me once with anything. Also i got sick of going into the hotel and dealing with arrogant staff every night.

the job at the minute is making me miserable. so its not a go back off word this time believe me or not

I think this may be a key phrase here. You have said similar things in the past (you're in danger of becoming the boy who cried wolf).

I also recall something about you not having any bookings for the first part of the year.

If it is genuine then I sympathise, but remember some people do have a long memory & it is easy to find previous posts made on a forum.

Keep your chin up & maybe go out with some other local DJs (mentioning no names :sj:) on some of their gigs. You may get the passion back sooner than you think.

I'm sorry to hear about your situation.

From what you've said, it seems the reason you feel like this is partly because you've treated like crap by the staff at your hotel residency and partly because your last couple of gigs didn't go well.

It sounds like a good idea to have a break for a few months.

Now just hang on before you go wading in, knowing nothing about the situation or John. I speak to John everyday on MSN and he is always having these little dramas and most of them are not even true. He said the same thing a few months ago and was definately giving up, then suddenly was spending a few grand on new gear.

Sorry, but at the moment or shall I say, over the past few weeks, Darren seems to have got the big 'grump' on?? Not sure why and it's none of my business either but as a casual reader of the forum...that's what it looks like to me. Don't get me wrong, I like this place and I have chatted to Darren on the phone and he seems like a nice bloke, pretty much thought that it was a clone of me if I am honest and I just think that lately, the niceness has disappeared?

There are two sides to DJing.
One is the fun of doing it and the other is providing a service to a customer and being paid for it.

When both sides line up then things are great.
But in real life we get awkward customers, people who wont dance and our gear gets damaged occasionally.

You just have to take the rough with the smooth and accept it, or move on...

The comments have been made on MSN time and time again as well as forums. I won't go into the complete truth as it will upset people, but suffice to say, there are many members on here who know what I am talking about.
