happy new year everyone!
I just wanted to raise this issue I'm having and maybe some help!!. I have done flyers myself on my computer using publisher and got buisness cards from vistaprint.I have got a add on thompson local and yellow pages free listings and iv used a number of free listing that iv found on the internet. Iv even put flyers in shop windows for a quid a week.I dont use my local paper as its £20 a week and when i did that a few years ago i didnt get a responce.I did get alot of work from another dj mind you but i felt i was not getting the benifits and only making him look good on my djing skills. So guys! what am i doing wrong. I dont seem to make my phone ring sometimes i think i should just give it up! I know its not about money i love music and i'm good at what i do. I'v done a number of discos and always got good quotes from the customers' and i even get a tip after. But like i stay i cant seem to get my disco name about any ideas to start off a fresh year! and get my phone ringing again.

I use a paid for advert in Yellow pages and get a lot of work from that.
It going to be a hard time in early 2009 for people having little money to spend.

The question you have to ask is where is the place you would go to look for a disco?
Personally I would look in the phone book and/or Yellow Pages.
Once at the phone book you would probably ring the first one you came to.
Thats why I call myself "A Rocking DJ Disco" The "A" gets me nearer the start of the listings.

Your next job after a website is to get it submitted to the search engines.
I use submitexpress.
http://www.submitexpress.com/submit.html
This is a free submission so will take a week or two to come out in the searches.
Thats why I call myself "A Rocking DJ Disco" The "A" gets me nearer the start of the listings.
That would get at the top yes, but only under the people who have paid for a listing so you will be under them.

As far as I am aware Yellow Pages dont do free listings.
I know they do online.
I pay £10 a month for my Yellow Pages ad and claim it under my tax.

Keywords are used by the search engine
i.e. for me...
Rocking DJ Disco Carlisle Cumbria hire etc etc
Have you put a description and title on your website ?
Heres mine from my web page:
<META name="keywords" content="rocking,dj,disco,hire,carlisle,cumbria,penrith,ken dal,rock,pop,soul,wedding,gig,party,parties">

thank you nigel but thats stunned me i'v not got a clue where to start with that lot but i have a read up and see what i can do thanks mate
There are companies out there that will do the coding and meta tags for you and guarantee 1st page on Google for a number of search criteria. It cost’s a couple of hundred pounds a year so it’s like doing one free gig! Yell dot com is good and they will build you a site for about £200.00 if you go with their top package, I cover 3 book areas though so they wanted £600.00 and it’s just not worth my while!
Best way to get work is to go out and find it! Make appointments with local companies, social clubs, wedding venues, youth clubs, schools etc and pop in to visit them with a box of chocolates. Try out the local supermarkets too as they often have canteens where they do parties for the staff’s kids!
I get loads of work this way, but then I do visit in full clown costume with balloons, sweets and all my CRB, PAT test etc in a little info pack, so it’s hard for them to forget me! I also do my food shopping in costume!

I prefer to do my own website.
For the sake of £30 for a piece of software it is well worth it.
It also means you can change your website when you want and not get charged for it.
My website comes at the top all searches anyway on Google and Yahoo.
Ok my website isnt the best in the world but it gets me work.
If you want a fantastic looking site then you probably need to go the professional route.

I have done a website.
Hi Marc,
Why don't you post a link to your website in the website help forum & ask for peoples comments & suggestions on how they think it can be improved?
The question you have to ask is where is the place you would go to look for a disco?
Personally I would look in the phone book and/or Yellow Pages.
I think most people will look online these days rather than a phone book or Yellow Pages...which is probably why so many people seem to be cancelling their Yellow Pages ads, because they simply don't bring in much work these days.
As far as I am aware Yellow Pages dont do free listings.
Yes they do.
I've just checked my local Yellow Pages, and there is a listing for my business there. It only has the business name, address & phone number, but it was definately free.

Nigel,
As far as I'm aware, when you put a free ad on Yell.com, they automatically give you a free listing in the paper version of your local Yellow Pages as well.
That's how it worked in MY case.
To be honest, I'd rather not have an advert in the paper Yellow Pages, as I've found it to be completely useless. In the year I've been listed in there, I've had one phone call requesting a booking...but the lady in question never returned the booking form.

JUst keep plugging away, at any bookings put some of your cards out on the tables, just one or 2 per table (I aways collect the good uns back at the end of teh night). if theres a notice board at the venue stick a few on there (make sure you have some drawing pins in ya repair kit).
goto google and type in free wesite searches, i do this every 6 months or so, ok you have to have a small pic or link but not an issue at bottom of ya home page.
websites mines got to big - review it every year - if ya wanna change programs/style you want to use do it in Jan - March when theres not a lot of work out there. Also have an update list on your home page and update stuff on your site weekly or every few days. Thsi does help as with my .tk domain name they send traffic reports and i didnt do anything for 1 month and traffic dropped some 90% ! - so I try n update every 3 - 4 days if I can.
But the most important area for getting more bookings is at bookings you do and from word of mouth. 2 very important areas. For me this counts for 0ver 90% of my bookings
Ok it takes longer for your name to get around, but what better advertising.
Oh and teh most important thing - is when you DJ be yourself !!!!

grand total for the year is £7850 + vat.
give's you an idea how many stinking drains i need to clear before i start to earn some Penny's
i always ask where people get my number as its a lot of cash to pay out for unknown results.
you can get a free listing but its restricted to one per address.

Initial impressions,
Graphically it's an attractive site.
Contentthe content is almost non existent it needs much more relevant content
Construction The site is constructed in 'Flash' which is not the most search engine friendly method of building a site.
Links, there are no inward bound links, and only two outward pointing links, plenty of good quality inward links are essential for high page rankings.
Location There's no geographical info either visible on site, or in the Meta tags, how are people supposed to know where you are based? Most people will search for a disco in their local area, if the search engines don't know where you are, you will be competing nationally for position with thousands and thousands of other discos, instead of the dozen local ones.
In its present form you are not going to rank well in the search engines, if at all.
Here's a quick analysis of the Meta data of your site.

Right ok thanks for that may i ask what do you think i need to do to make it better. Im not very clued up on website building and just did that as a first time. I am going to change things on the site so advise is very welcome and im sorry to bug you all im sure you guys are busy!. And very thanks to pe7e for taking the time to address the issues cheers.
First thing to do is to make sure your meta keywords and Meta description appear in your content pages (either choose different keywords, rewrite the content or a combination of the two). Shorten the Meta description a bit, I've done a rewrite of this below, feel free to use it if you like it.
Starlight Discos of London, provide music & karaoke to suit all events, ages and taste of music. If you're planning a party or special event, you can depend on Starlight discos to make your party an occasion to remember
Don't depend on a website to fill your bookings, it won't. The best source of work is the people at the gigs you do, get loads of business cards printed and hand them out to all who want them. Word of mouth and recommendations beat all other advertising into the ground as far as getting new bookings is concerned.

Mine does.
The vast majority of them, anyway.
Mine does.
The vast majority of them, anyway.
How strange, I get about 80% of mine through recommendations and returning clients. I do get quite a few enquiries from my websites but the failure rate from the web enquiries, through to confirmed bookings is quite high, and usually just after the price is mentioned  The web does provide the majority of the DIY equipment hires though, but even that is starting to come in from word of mouth now. Are you using paid for listings or add words in your marketing?

How strange, I get about 80% of mine through recommendations and returning clients.
My main market is weddings, so there isn't too much scope for returning clients (well, not in an ideal world anyway!).
I do get quite a few enquiries from my websites but the failure rate from the web enquiries, through to confirmed bookings is quite high
Maybe that's partly due to your website, the way you market it or possibly the way you respond to enquiries?
My conversion rate is low, but that doesn't concern me too much as I get loads of enquiries in the first place...so I still end up with enough work to keep me out virtually every weekend during the wedding season (April until October). I also have to turn down around 15-20 bookings a year due to already being booked.
Are you using paid for listings or add words in your marketing?
I use listings (some paid for & some free) on around 40 different directories.
Most of these are wedding directories (as that's my market) but some are just general mobile disco listings.
I also review my webstats, so I know which of my listings are bringing the most people to my site, and I record this information in a word document. That way I can cancel ads which aren't working & spend the money either on new listings or on upgrading those which are already doing well for me.

Mine does.

Same here.
I've not got any up-to-date stats but I suspect I'm getting about 70% of leads through the website, 29% through word of mouth and the very odd very occasional person ringing from an old YP or phone book (who almost invariably turn out to be tyre-kicking anyway).
My conversion rate for web enquiries is very high; last time I did the stats it was well over 80% and that's not changed recently.
My two target markets are weddings and teens.

we have acctually built up a reputation for good discos and reliability. It has been done over several years and found there was no quick fix. We started with a small ad in the local free paper (where we still advertise) now use business cards and website (not quite what we want but has contact details). Apart from that just hard work done over the last 5 to6 years

Thats been my experience for some years---high enquiry rate due to good Internet exposure and low conversion rate dictated by pricing=reasonable amount of work.
However in 2009 the enquiry rate will im sure drop down compared to previous years due to Economy worries, job security, diving house prices and investments and the conversion rate may well drop as well due to price pressure.
I very much hope im forecasting this wrongly for everybodys sake
The response to quotations from October 2008 to date in my business suggest this may well happen---

The other 10% of my work is birthdays (usually 40ths, 50ths & 60ths).
In an ideal world, 100% of my work would be weddings, though, as they are my favourite & most enjoyable gigs.

As Rob is ignoring me, I'll make a statement to qualify my question that I asked him.
We do mostly weddings, but as a consequense of doing some of those we have gained bookings for 30th & 40th birthdays, a couple of aniversaries (parents of the B&G & 1 first aniversary), more weddings (usually brothers & sisters of the original B&G & in 2 instances booked via the original B&G) & a family Christmas party. So I think it is folly to say that you don't get repeat bookings from weddings.

Dead right! (But then I think that Steve and me must have a similar business attitudes as I've noticed that I tend to find myself agreeing with him!)
As a wedding specialist, we've had anniversaries, birthdays, retirements, engagements, more weddings, christmas and seasonal parties - all out of initial wedding bookings. And yes, we've also had (looking back through the booking system!) 3 divorce parties where we've worked a wedding originally (although not necessarily the same bride and groom!).
Mind you, we've also done 2 funerals out them as well (both karaokes).
In case anyone is wondering how I know these things, I believe knowledge is everything when it comes to marketing. One of the first questions I ask potential clients is "How did you hear about us?" and these answers are recorded in our bookings database.
I think the key is building a good rapport during the wedding preparations. That way, the clients start to think of you as a friend and, providing you do a good job, the potential for further bookings is immense!
I've done a couple over the years, some were 'I'm free again' do's, rather than actual divorce parties, since they never married in the first place.
Here's a short play-list, since no one else has bothered yet.

Here's a short play-list, since no one else has bothered yet.
Why would people post playlists in a thread someone started to ask about advertising?

Simple, it must have got boring and drifted off topic over 10 posts ago. and no one, including myself, noticed.

In case anyone is wondering how I know these things, I believe knowledge is everything when it comes to marketing. One of the first questions I ask potential clients is "How did you hear about us?" and these answers are recorded in our bookings database.

spot on - if youre going to invest time, effort and money into advertising you should definitely spend time and effort measuring its effectiveness. This can help you improve your advertising, see what works and what doesnt, and invest in future advertising wisely.

I couldn't agree more.
I have a word document detailing all the sites where I advertise.
For each one it has the website address, cost, renewal date, and most importantly the number of hits it's brought to my website (which I update every month).
This way, I can see which adverts are working & which are not.
Needless to say, those which are not will be cancelled, and those which work well will continue or may even get updated to a premium listing.

I'll have a long wait, but in the grand scheme of things, it's pretty irrelevant. I won't lose any sleep.
Hope he's not holding his breath. ;)

Hi Marc,
I dont use any booking software as such, just a few sites that i advertise on - plus i get a lot of work off google adwords - just google "adwords" you can set your financial limits so you know what you are spending - i think you can spend £5 a month if you want, and stop it whenever you want so you are not tied in. This will help your google ratings and show your website on other related peoples sites, thus improving the chances of reaching people you normally wouldnt. And it has its own free easy to use stats so you can see how effective it is and which adwords are working for you.
