View Full Version : Oh what a Night x ONE MILLION
Charlie Brown

Oh My God! What a night....but what a night x one million! 200 children (same lot who were at my Notts County party) but without security! I arrived in a mini bus as Dad couldn't take me so that was £90 of my hard earned cash already...whether is what hard earned or not I don't know, you can decide for yourselves in a bit;) Setup for 7.30pm and my rig was looking rather neat for me I must say.
The hotel I was working at was called "The Rutland Square." http://www.rutlandsquarehotel.co.uk/The name and website say it all:) They were very tight on PAT testing etc. I managed to speak to you guys just before 8.00pm. There was a lot of hanging around involved until the party started at 9.00pm. The girl whose party it was is called "Suni" and it was her 16th. She didn't believe she needed security and her parents hired two 17 year olds to sell tickets on the door. Very dodgy setup if you ask me.... Everyone started arriving by 9.00pm and they were only around 120.
The hotel was very shocked at how people were behaving and weren’t expect it at all. For me it was just the norm. I had a full dance floor until I the manager comes up to me in a panic... "There is a girl being sick outside, can you please call her friends on the microphone to go and help her" I do a quick shout on the mic and everything is fine for around 10 minutes. The manager then comes back up to me and says "The mother is on the way and she didn't sound very happy but I will keep you posted" I have a paid roddie tonight so I'm able to go off and see what’s happening. I go outside to see a girl lying in a pool of sick and her mum shouting at every living thing in her sight. I can immediately see what has happened. The girl has drunk too much and her mother doesn’t like it. The girl then all of a sudden sat up and the mother ran over shouting; "My Darling Kate what have they put you through..What have they made you do, they are :Censored:s" The girl then tells her mother how her drink was spiked and she became very dizzy. The mother believes her which is crazy! I have to take a step back to see if I’m imagining things or is that woman really naive. The next thing the mother pulls out her mobile phone and calls 999. She SCREAMS down the phone shouting at the operator explaining that her darling little daughters drink has been spiked. I was furious and was contemplating taking the phone off her and speaking to the operator myself. The manager was there. I'm a professional guy so took a step back and didn't comment.
I went back to my set to make another announcement. I played an air raid siren and then said "Boys and Girls we have The Bill drama coming to Nottingham, so can we all be on our best behaviour.” There was as lot of booing and laughter and I carried on the music. The next thing I know the manager walks up to the electricity point and yanks out my two plugs. Amps, laptop etc all cut off. I’m not best pleased at this as he could have politely said “can you please cut the music off, were closing down the party.” I ask him if I can plug my equipment back in so I can explain to everyone on the mic what is happening. On the mic I ask everybody to leave the building to the the doors on their right.
The next thing I know some sort of riot takes place. Boys charge into each other and smash into the girls. The girls then pick up this huge wedding cake (which is for the wedding party next door) and they start throwing it around the room. They then get some more and more! The next thing I know blood, cake and people are flying around the toom! It was absolute bedlam. I have never witnessed such behaviour in my life...especially from “clever high school students.” I simply can’t put it into words. I then come back on the mic and explain that everyone must leave the building now. The next thing the fire alarms start going off and sprinklers start on the toilets! I simply couldn’t believe what I was seeing. The manager looks like she is about to faint. There is no security. No parents. Just her, one bar staff and 120 drunk kids. I try to help clear people out but don’t get too involved for my own safety.
Eventually the animals are outside. The hotel has to shut the automatic barriers as kids start throwing stones and pebbles at the windows. I start packing down listening to the sound of 120 kids. I then hear the police. After 20 mins of the packing down my rig I can’t help but to go and have a look what is going on. I missed most of the drama but managed to grab a video of boys jumping on cars!
Crazy crazy people....if only I had a video for the wedding cake fight....sprinklers....and the uproar outside.
Sorry for the bad English and grammar. I’m in a rush as I’m trying to learn French verbs...but I had to let you know.

And this is the point when I get shouted at and abused....I wasn't going to say :o but as of yet I don't have PLI. I will do in six months when I turn 16. If I did have it I wouldn't be covered. Who's name would it go under? Sometimes I go by myself...sometimes dad takes me...sometimes mum takes me. I literally had the debit card in my hand but the lady at DJ Guard kind of put me off....I didn't expect my little hobby to turn into a small business....so maybe now is the time to invest in that. Don't get me wrong, its not that I don't want it or think I don't need it...or can't afford it....just whose name does it go under?

I agree on the video.
I can hear you saying that the police are coming. Others in the video dont really care about being on camera.
If it was me I would of stayed out the way and not interact with the children. Let them play and get told off. You are better than that!
Also I thought you had to be 18 to hold PLI???

Charlie, I pointed this out to you on this forum last March. You can't be "Mr Independent" - you are a CHILD. It matters not whether you are earning money from your hobby, the point is you have no insurance which could have EXTREMELY serious LIVE CHANGING consequences for you and your parents if something goes wrong.
Until you become an adult, your activities and PLI should be in the name of a responsible parent or guardian and they should be present at all times (assuming this is a condition of the Insurer, which it is very likely to be)
Charlie, I will make no apologies for being hard hitting with this, as it is for YOUR own sake and that of your parents. If they own a house, how would they feel if they have to sell up and rent a flat for the rest of their lives... because their son worked as a DJ with no insurance? That's how serious it COULD be. Sort it out.

Does this seem reasonable A1. Would this cover me?

Not wanting to sound like a boring old :Censored: , I agree.
If these things go on at your discos, you need to have a good long think if you intend making any career of this. Whether its your fault or not - the reputation will stick.
i only believe the story as I have seen this sort of thing happen in hotels I used to work in, however the DJ would without doubt have a bad report afterwards.

I'm most appalled that the hotel took the booking without parents or security as a prerequisite. The 'smarter' kids are the stupider they tend to be, by comparison, on alcohol.

Charlie please dont take this the wrong way, but I think the way you handled the announcement about the police coming by playing the sirens and the bill theme kind of made a mockery out of what message you were trying to get across and probably fueled the atmosphere of the kids who generally would of seen it as a comical situation which was the complete opposite of the intention in the manager which I would not call very professional.
As Djs we really need to think before we talk.

OK, let's keep the criticism constructive please.
Charlie is young and inexperienced and there are some situations where he has made the wrong choice, but let's not forget his age. In other threads, he has showed a remarkable maturity in handling situations and let's not forget that these unfortunate circumstances are not his own doing.
He will take advice on board I am sure and I do not want this to turn into a mud slinging contest.
Charlie, you need a responsible person with you, to look after you if things goes drastically wrong. I was 15 when I started and suffered from a few problems like you and understand what it's like so do sympathise. (There you go, that's a first from me!)

I agree with Darren, when i joined i didnt even realise how old he was, his posts are far older than him. :)
Its a lesson learned and his approach with the police would have probably went down a lot better if he done it in a pub, full of adults who (mostly) know how to behave. Im sure everyone can think of at least one occasion where they could have handles a situation differently (maybe not a disco situation). I do agree Charlie that your best bet, regardless of the age of the punters, is to stay with your gear at all times. Ive had stuff knicked in "a old mans pub" (sorry to the older ones on here but even you can probably think of a dated pub with the 90yr old bitter drinkers!) so age aint important when folk see something they want! :)

It really doesnt matter about age, I know a DJ locally who is 35 and believe me Charly shows a lot more maturity at 15 than him. It surprises me that this guy has not ended up in hospital the things he says at times and is totally unaware of the way things sound snd the consequences that could occur.
At the end of the day if no one points out how it could have been the wrong thing to say how could charlie learn and one day it may be something a lot bigger and both he and his gear could be at risk.
This forum i am sure is a huge help to Charlie, there was nothing about like this when I started and I like many others here have had to learn the hard way.

Can I just ask one or two things here - with Charlie being still new to the game he might benefit from the following:
why did the manager pass on all responsibility to Charlie here?
there was a girl being ssick outside - so he asked Charlie to announce it or for her friends to go and help her - instant reaction from the crowd no doubt is "whheyyyyyyy !!!!! " followed by a big cheer.
then the girls mother coming is nothing to do with the DJ - why should he keep the DJ informed? - shes irrate at either her daughter or someone at the party - IT IS NOT the DJs job to sort out troublesome guests or guests parents. OR to be TOLD announce this or announce that.
Its the managers job to oversee and sort the trouble or stop it at source.
Charlie, my advice to you - and I know its hard when youre young and have to speak back or disagree with adults, especially those in authority (and who should know better) but dont let managers shirk their own responsibilty and pass it on to you - you are there to entertain, not manage and especially not get involved in 'sorting' trouble out. trying to stop it or difusing before it happens if you can maybe, but not sorting it. despite this not being your job - it could also be very dangerous should you get mixed up with the wrong crowd.
if you feel a manager is putting on you or making you announce or do things you feel could comprimise you, your gear or your safety, then explain to him why you feel he would be better doing that himself.
ive wittered on a bit there, and youll probably only understand what i mean with a few years more experience as you may take the managers actions to be the norm, but hopefully this might help you stay out of any awkward situations before you get put into them.

Did you use a contract for the booking Charlie.
I always do, and it states in my T&C's :-
8) The client will provide adequate supervision of guests (especially children) at the venue, and will be liable for any loss of, or damage to, our equipment other than that caused by general wear and tear.
I've never been questioned about this and would probably have refused to play until an adult was present.
Easy to say in hindsight but maybe something you should consider in future.
I wouldn't dwell on this gig too much and put it down to experience - it's these kind of things that make an experienced DJ just that, experienced!
Good luck with your future bookings mate :D

I would restrain the culprit, using the precise amount of force necessary. If they struggle you increase the force.
A few weeks ago I returned from the toilet to find somebody messyng with my rig. I was able to approach without them seeing me, I tapped them on the shoulder leaned towards them & said "you'll regret it". In this situation that was all that was needed to extract a most sincere & heartfelt apology. Sometimes a little more pressure is needed, that's all I'm saying.

Once upon a time the police would've turned up, haulled the little knob off the car & given him a clip round the ear. He would've thought twice about doing it again. It belongs on Jeremy Kyle or Jerry Springer's shows not on a mobile disco forum.
Those idiots jumping on the cars really deserve the owners to be built like a brick outhouse with a short temper . If I caught anyone jumping on our car they wouldn't be able to jump again for a very long time.
You seem to revel in the fact that this sort of thing happens at your gigs. This sort of behaviour (apart from the legal aspects) is just plain idiotic.
It might be an idea to pass on that video to your local police, I'm sure the owners of the cars would appreciate anything that helps identify the perpetrators of the damage to their vehicles.
This is a sad indictment of the state of the world today
Showing your age Steve. ;) :D
whilst the original poster may seem mature at times, i fear this thread is just an example of immaturity shining through. Why were you even outside as the girl was being sick, why were you outside as the police arrived? Yes thats right, you got excited and didnt want to miss any of the gossip. Id have stuck with my equipment and started packing down
Not sure that's fair.
I don't think it's a good idea for posters to infer they'd use violence if they found someone jumping on their car.
Two wrongs don't make a right.
Totally agreed.
So you'd just stand there and applaud their contribution to society would you!
No. But I wouldn't ( as I'm sure nobody on here would either) threaten violence on a Public Forum. ;) I might very easily have a quiet word in their ear, and attempt to show them the error of their ways however. ;) Discreetly. ;) Firmly. ;) They usually come round to my way of thinking.

Right well, here I go and please ignore the mound of spelling mistakes-I think I have deleted word on my computer. I always have to copy and paste it into word for spell check!:)
Just got back from a french exam at school...all I could say is "J'ai habite dans un masion" and then sat there for an hour, whilest all the other clever sods scribbled away:( I don't know if you can remember when I first came on the forum I always used to blame my dyslexia for spelling things wrong....it's obviously come back with that french!
Right please let me explain with the "bill are coming to nottingham" and myself going outside with the cammera. Incase you arn't aware the people attending the party are nearly all from my school and a good 80% I'm freinds with and a good percent I'm very good freinds with. This and freinds are my enjoyment in life, espically when home life can be :Censored:
For years now I'm known as the "guy who likes a laugh" "easy to get along with" and although it pains me to say it "drama queen." I knew it was safe for me to turn the music off and speak on the mic to all my freinds and say "The Bill are coming to Nottingham" because I knew the reaction I would get. They all laughed and said "thats typical of Charlie, always has a positive view on things." At that time there were no cake fights etc, because the police were simply coming to "investigate the mothers claim," and NOT shut down the party. Believe you me I would not dream of saying that if it was a "private" doo (with people I didn't know) because YES its dam right un-professional and YES it could provoke problems. I have been with those people for years and I know them all well enough to be able to have a joke with them without it turning out into carnaige.
The cake fight and "riot" happend around 15 minutes after I expalind on the mic about "The Bill coming." They all started booing and fighting when the manager bursts into the room, turnes on the lights and pulled out all my mains leads. That's when the trouble started-not before! The people involved in the cake fight were not from my school-and I dont have any dealings with them.
I had to deal with the girl who was being sick because I'm held responsible for these parties, even though I didnt't organise this one. I know of her, and whoever it is I dont mind helping out. I would be a ignorant prat to simply say "No" and not help her. I was probably the only sober one at the party too.
I went outside to video the incidents outside because my roodie was packing down and a lot of my freinds were out there. Again I wouldnt dream of videoing it if I didn't know the clients. The vandals jumping on the cars-again I dont know. We do get one or two other schools come, which is normally half the trouble.
Yes I made them sign my terms and conditions and booking form BEFORE the party started because I had a gut feeling it was going to happen.
Yes I will do them again actually. They are very very good money, but a night (although its mayhem) I quite enjoy. I love taking control, looking after people, and sorting out problems. I sell most of the tickets for these events etc.
I post these threads on here because it gives you guys a little insight of what I'm up to. If it's "damanging" the forum then I wont do it in the near future. Don't get me wrong I much prefer 50ths and 60ths and do a lot of them....but I leave you guys to tell us about those parties and I will tell the "out of the ordinary stuff." :)
I have the rest of my life to be "Mr Serious DJ" and I know that the petty comment I slipped in did not start/cause/was the effect of what happened that night.
Those who may think I like a goss or that I'm immature, or that maybe I shouldn't be doing the amount I am doing because of my age. Thats fine and we all entitled to my opinion and I respect that:) There are a few things I would like to say to some people-but I dont rise to them because they probably know best....coughsoundtrackercoughbouncydancefloorcoug h.

Charlie, I've done things in the past and learnt from them the hard way. I won't go into them all on here right now as it's probably not worth it but I am thought of the same way as you really...in that I mean that people know I like a good laugh etc etc.
One thing I will tell you (and this only happened about 3 years ago) was once I was DJing at a venue in the town centre. It was one of my regular Indie nights and it was at a venue that was free entry. It was a very popular night and always busy and most of the time it was packed with punters that loved the music but every now and then you would get one or two idiots in. Obviously, the doorstaff and myself didn't know they were idiots at the time until it was too late. Both of the following incidents happened on one night:
The first one was early on at around 11pm. A guy came up to me and said "Play something decent mate"...I got on the defensive straight away and asked him what he thought was 'decent'...He replied by listing a load of RnB & Hip Hop tracks. I laughed at him and told him to open his eyes and read the posters...He didn't like that and I watched him walk off back to his mates and when he got there he did the 'knuckle shuffle' sign in my direction. I got quite wound up at that but decided to put a track on for them which happened to be 'Gay Bar' by Electric Six (someone had asked for it earlier). I said over the mic that it was for the guys at the bar and pointed at the guy who had given me the sign earlier. He steamed over on a mission and went for me big time. He missed me when he went to punch me and within seconds the doormen had them out the door. On that occasion I should have just ignored them but I am not the type to ignore idiots like that and he should've remembered that I had the mic. I learnt a lesson then in that I should be careful what I play and what I say sometimes.
The second incident that night was along the same lines. I can't remember why to be honest but for some reason I had my West Ham football shirt on whilst I was DJing (bad mistake). It was gone midnight and everything was going well, loads of people dancing etc etc and from out of nowhere, this guy comes over and taps me on the shoulder. I turn around and he grabs my arm and says "West Ham scum" right in my face and then proceeds to show me a Man Utd tattoo on his arm. He won't let me go and as much as I struggle, I can't get away from him. The doormen noticed and 'escorted' him out but as he is on his way out the door I get on the mic and shout "Up the 'Ammers!"...He hears me, struggles with the doormen and tries to get back to me. Luckily he didn't make it. I learnt from there that I have to be careful what I say and unfortunately...what I wear! I was innocently wearing a football shirt...but to some people, that is a red rag to a bull. I haven't done it since.
None of us are perfect Charlie and we've all done stupid things in the past (if we're honest)...simple as that really.

Just got through reading this topic.
Charlie, you're a good kid with a bright future in this game if you take on board all the constructive critism.
The venue has to accept a large proportion of the blame, as does the hirer for not supplying adequate supervision. I can also understand why Charlie went outside, he's young, was with a group of friends and peers, but I think he realises that he was wrong to go outside and video it. He should have kept inside with his equipment.
Charlie, a few points for you to take on board:
1. Look into getting some PLI
2. Make sure you have a clause in your terms & conditions stating that there must be adult supervision for youth events.
3. take on board all the comments in this thread, even if you think some are harsh. I don't think there's anyone on the forum that doesn't like you, although some comments might seem a little harsh to you, they have valid points.
Anyways....onwards and upwards. Good luck for the future.

All I can add is that it does seem wierd how many 'stories' CB seems to have (including one I remember where you turned up with all the kit on a bus)....
However if these are all genuine I suggest you need to go under the wing of someone with experience of the business for a little while (many of the other post replies have already picked out the issues you need to learn from in how the evening 'turned out') - and the video really is not one to be proud of.

i agree with some of the comments about the video, really is in bad taste and can be interpretted as you glorifying in what is happening even if that is not the case.i also think the police announcement was wrong but you can move on and learn from these mistakes.
the last thing i would say is ,if you are going to do more parties like this i would insist on them hiring door staff or not take the booking, leaving you to do what you do best and dj (you can't dj ,organise manage be door person and first aider and all round good guy at the same time)

Charlie Mate, I started at your age and had my dad come along with me. Actually Im now 32 and my Dad still comes with me sometimes.:D The fact is if a situation like this occurs at my gig I just keep my head down and dont move from my post.
If the Venue decide to end the performance I have a piece wrote in my Terms and Conditions stating that as an Entertainer the Venue can request me to end the performance earlier then scheduled if the audiance/guests are breaking the venues terms and conditions. If this is the case I am not liable to for the hotels decissons.
Also stated in my terms and conditions I state that it is my companies policy that at any party for minors (under 18) the must be either Door Staff or appropriate adults who will supervise the guests. When I take the booking for 18th etc I clearly state this. Many parents actually take my advice and book proper door staff as they are as little as £60 each for the night.
I recently done an 18th where I stated this and the parents hired 2 door staff along with both parents being present and at the end of the night they was grateful for my advice as many things like under age outside drinking etc happend and the door staff sorted it out quickly and without causing any inconvinence.
The Hotel is to blame as they should always suggest it as well to the booking person.
As for your PLI, take the advice from others. Try and get some before you do anymore gigs, as you never know when you may need it. I have a mate whos son is a DJ and what he did was set the company up for his son and then showed his son as an employer. As your 15 you can have a part time job.....and well as your Dad or Mum as the owner as long as they are present and you are an employer for them you will be covered.:D
Right advice now over and keep up the good work at your hobby/business as you obviously have a passion and DJing is all about passion to the music and the talent to entertain. Treasure it mate as it only gets better:)

You know what Rob....that has just put the biggest :D on my face.
Thank you sir...and thank you very much to all who have helped and commented. I will certainly learn from mistakes...but it's got too much now, so can we say the thread is closed:)
If anybody has anything to say that hasn't been said then thats cool.
But I think I'm kind of getting the picture:
Get PLI
Don't take the "mic" or make a mockery of a serious situation
Don't video or antaganise a serious situation (will only fuel it and make it worse)
Don't be responsible for other people's problems...look after yourself and your kit THEN others (just like in a plane crash):)
Don't post any more threads on parties that have gone wrong.
Dont upload video's of people commiting a crime (it may give the impression that I'm proud and love this kind of violence, because thats the kind of person I am:( )
Most of all carry on with what I am doing....take on board all the critism and positive feedback and use it to develop my skills and business furthur untill one day, when I will rule the world:D :D
Thanks again People.....MDD ROCKS:)
