TomTom One Satnav question

I bought a satnav yesterday.

Is there any way of knowing how charged the internal battery is (like you get on digital cameras & mobile phones)? because for the life of me I can't work out how to find this information...and it would be useful to know.

Yes. When it gets low it flashes a battery sign. When it's flat it don't work. If you're in a vehicle, plug it in, cos it'll go flat very quickly. As far as I know, there's no battery indicator until it needs charging. IMHO, the TOMTOM is the best on the market.

Tap on the bottom right of the screen when you have a satellite signal or when you have a route planned and it should show you the amount of battery power and satellites being used on the right hand column at the top.

Have to agree here. I got Emma a TOMTOM XL for Christmas and even she can use it.

To quote Emma " I like the way it puts me back on the right road after I turn down the wrong one !"

I had a Tomtom Go300 which I have upgraded to the willy waving top of the entire range Tomtom 940T. It has all sorts of very clever things on it, which now that it is working properly are fantastic!

Tom Tom Ones also flash up a battery bar when they power up (or at least the version we have does), but if you keep it plugged in to your cigarette lighter when in use, it's not an issue.
(unless like me your cigarette lighter doesn't work)

You can always plug it in to a spare USB on your rig & give it a charge while you're gigging if the cigarette lighter option is not available, I've got back from Devon using this method & it only died when i turned off the M25 towards Barnet (long after I didn't need it anyway)

might help to say what version youve got? Especially as the V3 are being cleared out at the moment and the V4 is the latest version, yet they are quite different!

Ive just got the V4 and the battery symbol is bottom right (like mobile phone bars)

V3 does not appear to have a permanent display of batery level (or not that I've noticed anyway)

Should have bought a Bose system--no I mean a Garmin like me---

Battery level top right and signal strength top left when you switch on:thumbs_up:

As Steve says the battery lasts ages when charged up---

I tend to plan my own route from the Internet and then bring in Sat Nav when getting near the destination for an easy cruise in to the destination--

Common sense will tell you good and bad routes--remember Sandy reported her Sat Nav took her through the middle of London to get to Sarf London from up here ( Peterborough) :eek: :eek: :eek: when the M25 would have probably been the no brainer for those---er with a brain---:confused:

Sat Nav is brilliant used with common sense--dont rely on it totally or you will end up a dead end or stuck in a Ford--thats as in water crossing not a Dagenham Dustbin:)

The only advantage of having Sat Nav on during the journey is for speed cameras---unless you like the company of a females voice of course.

Overkill of course---naturally none of us ever break a speed limit---:cool:

Actually driving late at night its helpful to keep your concentration doh!

It had been on my list for a while, and I'm already spending a load of money on double glazing this week, so I thought another £99.99 wouldn't make any difference!

It's largely for when I do discos a fair distance away in areas which I don't know & which aren't covered by my London or Surrey A-Z.

At the moment, I have to print out loads of Google maps & mess about trimming them down & sticking them all together. Nightmare...although not any more!

Totally right, I had a DJ last summer follow his Satnav to a post-code in the wilds oh Herefordshire, he ended up totally lost on a single track in the middle of nowhere, about five miles from where he should have been! Luckily my good lady had the presence of mind to ring her Dad who used to be a rural Postman to "Talk him down!" He arrived half an hour late, and as normal was greeted with "There not ready for you yet,its over-running by about an hour!"

I wouldn't rely 100% on this anyway.

That's why I always allow stacks of extra time when gigging out of my local area.

You chaps must have cheap rubbish then. Try the new Tomtom with IQ routes. This is intelligent sat nav. It knows what time routes are going to be busy and which way too send you. It also has live traffic updates and Google search, should you wish to find something that isn't a POI.

Right, there are two mapping systems for Satnav, as I found out when I went blindly into Halfords to get mine. I wanted a top of the range Sony, as I've always had great service from their gear. I asked for a demo, and we typed in my postcode. My suspicions were aroused when it came up as the wrong Postal Town. It then directed us to a place which is only two miles from my house. Across a river. Where there is no bridge. :eek: :( :(

It's not infallible, but it's very good. I gather the new one, which my son has just got, even tells you which lane to take. :D

That's one of the great things about the internet...you can do most of your research before even going to the shop, because like you, I knew virtually nothing about Satnavs beforehand.

I spent about an hour doing just that, and having read a number of reviews etc, went for what is apparantly the top selling Satnav in the UK at the moment.

When you buy a Tomtom, you get the latest map update and can update map correction etc too.

That's what I did.

I downloaded the Tomtom software & connected the satnav to my computer to discover there was a more up to date map available than the one already installed, so I dumped the latest version onto my Tomtom.

I believe that after the initial one, you have to pay for further updates, though.

When you buy a Tomtom, you get the latest map update and can update map correction etc too.

But a 700, not a 900;)
You can share corrections with mine, never tried to update my maps. must have a go.
