Another sign of the times ...

Doing my quiz last night and chatting to the landlord who tells me all the Greene King pubs around the Dorset area have been told to stop having Friday night entertainment, no discos, karaoke or anything. I don't do any work for them so it doesn't affect me.

Our top Wedding Venue closed its doors for the last time on Tuesday, Luckily I haven't got much booked there anyway this year, but it will hit my mate hard as he does about 60 a year there! Infact he's talking about retiring completely. Looks like things will get worse before they get better!

It is a lesson though isn't it and that's not to tie yourself down to just the one residency.
My local is cutting down on it's entertainment and having just me there twice a month from this weekend. That suits me as I have regular nights allover the place. I agree that I think it will get worse but I don't think it will be forever. I was speaking to a lady on the phone yesterday who said that she rang me because I did her friends wedding last year. The friends of hers are also friends of mine (I don't know her though) and they'd mentioned that it was best to call me quickly and early in the year because I am always fully booked up. She thought that was a good thing....and it is.

I only have 2 in Feb at the moment, 1 was from last year and one recent booking.

I have been asked to do a friend of my step-daughters wedding in October, said I'll knock £50 off and do it for £225, she seems keen so will be hassling her for the NRBF in the next couple of weeks :D

I think that's the way some people will do things too. I know loads of people on here stuff like "No, stick to your price.." etc etc but I would rather earn slightly less and earn something than nothing at all. Ok, agreed...IF it can be avoided then obviously that would be ideal but I think some people (including myself) may well have to take it on the chin and do the odd discount.

In principal, to a degree I agree with that, however in reality I don't think life is never that easy.

Scenario .... You've got little work, bills are coming in etc. the pressure is on, you take a booking, say in a pub as a one off. The landlord likes you and offers you every other Saturday at a reasonable rate (not pertinent really to this discussion). So you would say what?

1. "Sorry but I don't do residencies"

or you think, heck this money will help with my bills, upgrade my kit etc.

2. "Yes Mr landlord, I'm your dj!"

I feel it's far too easy to make judgements like this when the order book is full, than when you are struggling.
