Panic cancellations

Due to a sudden spate of cancelled bookings already this year, all with the excuse of money. I wondered if anyone else was having these problems as well.
On Saturday I turned up to a booking that turned out it had been cacelled 2 days prior without telling me. My booking for the 17th of this month just cancelled (and unfortunaly hadnt signed contract yet as well) .
And after being ill over christmas and having to pass all my work on (which as you can imagine has hit me quite badly anyway)

Funnily enough, I had five phone calls enquiring about discos enquiries today, which is probably the most I've ever had in a single day. The trouble is they came at the worst posible time, as I was having all my windows replaced, so the computer was unplugged & I couldn't get to any paperwork, as everything was covered with dustsheets. Nightmare!

Yesterday I had a couple who had booked me for wedding photo and disco in a local hotel. They phoned me to say they would have to cancel the photographs and now having a very small wedding with an evening reception at a social club. They are still using me for the disco. The reason is one worked for woolies and the other has just been made redundant from Nissan. I fear this is a sign of things to come.

I am looking more into pa hire as I can see more and more ipod weddings coming up.

I have now signed a contract with my hotels which indicates that any bookings cancelled prior to the event within 60 days will incure a charge of 70% of the booking fee.
I am also taking non refundable larger deposits from privatte bookings just incase of cancellation as i know we arn't the cheapest Discos around and the credit card machine is definately on the way'

Why wouldn't they? I think you're confusing 'booking fee' with the total cost of the booking, but I suppose it all depends on how high a percentage of the total cost, the booking fee actually is.

Anyone who doesn't know you could take that statement as fact, which most of us know it isn't.

In reality you do weddings using a digital playout device using iPods as your storage.

Please stick to the facts, as the iPod wedding joke is wearing as little thin.

I offer IPOD docks and PA for hire, I launched it with the intention of aiming it at ****tail parties/dinner dances/BGM and occasions where a DJ would not be required.

However an increasing number of Wedding clients are requesting information/quotes on this service to replace the DJ!

Morally it may be wrong but I'm in business to make money and the client is offerered information so they can make a balanced decesion.

Suprised at you Nigel. I would have thought, knowing how wary you are of everything, you would not take any bookings incase they cancel. Is this not how you usually work ?? :p

I take a £20 deposit that is none returnable on cancellation.

At first I just got the money on the night but got caught out with someone who didnt cancel until the last minute.

The deposit sorts out the good clients from the time wasters.

Any bookings I take will require an immediate credit card deposit of £50 to secure the slot, as I have a lot enquiries for that day - whenever that day is. Should have been an estate agent.:eek: :beer1: :party1:

Just out of interest, how do you get them to read and agree to your terms & conditions over the phone? Surely the client would want to know what they're agreeing to before handing over any money..

There's also the distance selling regulations which if I recall correcly, allow the customer 14 days to cancel and have any money that they've paid refunded, so that method is not entirely foolproof.

Well...you could have your terms & conditions on your website like I do, or maybe you could email them to the client.
