Guys,

Been approached by a company who has offered us a 2 month trial for a text to screen system which apparently is PC based, we used this system in the club which was well taken to but I don't feel 100% that there's a market in the mobile sector, is there any guys who have tried this system out on mobile?

Didn't Vectis have something like this?

I totally agree, Nigel.

Any other ways of obtaining requests I just see as a gimmick.

I know some DJs stateside that have used this as an upsell with great success. For School and youth events I can see it being a winner. For all other events I can't see any point.

You need to speak to Paul Arnett. he has done a lot of work on this and has quite a smooth system running for this.

This.

Also it'd be very distracting if people start texting all manner of random comments/insults etc. while working.

a friend hosted an under 18's ball

it was all on a big screen on the stage
a photographer walked around taking photos
the photos went on screen with a code next to it
people would text the number with the code number and theyd get sent the picture to their phone

they could also do test messages to the screen!

i thought it was a good idea

edit: i presume you can put some sort of delay on messages appearing, say 30 seconds? so you can edit out the naughty ones!

There was a company called Screenfly who were doing this a few years ago too.

I have been looking at this again and maybe it has some merit in a fun sort of way, but these systems are not cheap.

One's that I came up with are:

Iwall (integrates with Virtual DJ)
Firetext (planned to integrate with Virtual DJ)
T2S Mobile
Message Station
Text Demon (doesn't publish prices)
Textfever
Textlive

I would be interested if anyone else has any other suggestions or recommendations for software.

I tried this about 4 years ago - OK there was a manual step involved - ie the customer texted a PAYG mobile and I keyed the messages into a scroller overlay on R4 - but soon abandoned it when I realised that about 90% of the messages were either totally unsuitable (ie swearing, mickey-taking) or were kids at weddings pleading for Rap/R&B when the floor was full of aunts soaking up Abba.

Depends on the gigs you cover but I really can't see this being an upsell in the UK. Don't be sold on the whole 'aftermarketing' thing either - what we sell isn't a commodity product so there's little or no benefit to building a contacts list when 99.99% of them will never ever convert.

This system was installed in a nightclub in Leeds called Baja Beach. Although the system is great in there for people to text messages to be displayed around the club such has "happy birthday Joe" etc but I cannot see this working in a mobile disco situation and if I was to do it myself I would look at getting somebody in to operate it for me as I would like to give my 100% effort into Dj'in and not sorting through the text to screen messages.
