You might find folks are more willing to help if you introduce yourself in the Newbies Section http://www.mobilediscodirectory.co.uk/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=32

Indeed so Steve.

Sounds unusual, unless you're meaning the voiceover facility? Every time you switch the mic on, the music level drops, allowing you to speak over the music. There should be a switch on the mic channel saying "Off/on/talk". "On" would be easier to understand.

My initial thoughts too Pete, but he does say the amp cuts out, so I'm stumped.

That's what he says, but does he mean the sound level falls, as we both think? ;)
If he means exactly what he says, then I too am baffled.

Is it a corded or cordless mic. I am assuming corded but if it is a cordless mic it could have electrical defect ? More info needed.

First things that spring to mind.

Have you tryed different cables? My first thought was that the mic or mic cable might be dodgy which would then send a dodgy signal through the mixer and in to the amp, causing it to cut off.

Is the amp faulty? Have you tryed using a different amp to see if thats the problem???

another possibility is the switch sending a 'thump' down the signal path causing the amp's protection circuit to cut in.

Or, but I doubt it, the gain is waaaaaaaaayyy to high, again causing the protection to activate, but that would be proceeded by one hell of a feedback:eek::D
