Guys and gals.

As you may know I am starting up this year. despite many years on radio I have no experience of Mobile DJ'ing and would welcome any offers to 'tag along' and of course lug the gear around and set up etc, especially a wedding or two (yes I would wear a suit if needed). Although I am getting on a bit (Mid 40's), I am not above being told what to do by a 20 year old, so don't be shy!

I am in Nottingham and can travel pretty much anywhere within reason. I don't want paying at all, I am getting much more value than money can buy just by watching/listening and helping out. I don't need or want to do any actual DJ'ing, unless of course you just want the next track on during a toilet break etc. I am mainly after the experience of what you do, how you do it, where you put lights and why, what you say, how you are reading the dancefloor/crowd etc.

Late finish is no problem and of course, help you pack everything away again.

PM me with any details or just post on here. I am particularly available on Saturday nights and Sundays. Working during the week and most Saturday mornings still.

Just added Coventry to the tour 9th May so might be useful as its not only Barn Dance, Line Dance and Disco but a bit of Strictly including Latin American etc:D

woodie do you have a local supplier of disco and djing equipment? You may find they hire out discos and in which case you can use their hire kit, earn money and not have to worry about overheads apart from national insurance.

Thanks Decks.... Gear is not the problem. Getting some insight as to how discos are run now is. Hence asking to tag along to gain knowledge whilst lending a free hand to whoever is kind enough to offer a space.

What a good idea - I'd be happy to have a "free roadie" tag along.

I'm serious, If anyone would like to put themselves forward I would be happy for a "newbie" or someone starting out to tag along for a gig or two.

I wish that was on offer when I started back up after many years absence.

It certainly would be an eye opener as many people think DJ'ing is a breeze!

So anyone local to me in the Northamptonshire area who is presentable, fit and likes hard work pm me! :D

Absolutely Darren.

When I do start this it will be done the right way. Every track I play i will have the original of on CD. All equipment will be PAT tested. I will have produb, PLI and accident dameg insurances/licenses. I have spoken at length with PRS etc. My vehicle is already insured for business. I will most likely be VAT registered from the off.

There are ways of doing things and ways of doing things. It would be so easy for me to have a go with my own gear next week in a poub somewhere and start off with a bad reputation from day one. Or do it right and start of properly from day one. :D

Unless you are buying shed loads of gear or think you will go through the threshold, I'm not sure why you'd bother?

Not being nosey at all Darren. I already run a moderately successful company (driving instructor training) and am approaching the threshold for that now. It MAY make sense to by accountant to run this all under one umbrella. Otherwise, I would rather not do the VAT part as I have been there before.

For example, £250 for a disco is £250 to the customer. Once you try £250 +vat, THEY pay more. £250 including VAT usually starts with 'can you do it cheaper for cash?'.

Been VAT registered before so know the ropes. As you say, apart from fuel VAT recovery there is very little I could gain from it.

Just a thought.

Learn by doing my friend. Does anyone in your family have a birthday coming up? or an event? Do it for your friends or friends of friends etc... This way you can charge em just drinks or even for free if you want and this means you can make mistakes and it wouldnt be the end of the world. You'll learn loads which you can as a "bedroom dj".

I was taught on my first day by being shown how to use the record decks and then they left me to get on with it.
After that I would watch the other DJ's and listen to what they were saying.
I picked up a few lines that way.

I tend to say very little these days other than introducing myself and a few announcements then goodnight at the end. I tend to concentrate on playing the right music by reading the crowd and taking requests.

If i havent DJed for a while I sometimes play the gear at home and set it up in the dark with my reading lamp to simulate a real gig.

I must of read it millions of times even when i was a bedroom dj i read about sections about pirate radio, contracts for doing gigs aboard etc... It takes awhile for things to sink in but once you can link stuff together it'll teach you plenty of things you can use with mobile discos. Granted its abit dated (tips on rizla papers to mark cue points on 12inchs) it drums into you the joy you can get out of djing. When you have a night you can just read the crowd and you "take a chance" on a record and it pays off its amazing feeling! Never would of gotten this far without this book!

Yep, they are nice guys in DV got a good deal on my P5000s in there (although not as good as the one Darren got me on the replacements when they were nicked)

I wouldn't expect anything else down Mays Lane (full of chavs :sj:, isn't it amazing how you can have one of the most affluent areas of London & one of the chavviest within the space of a mile or so of each other)
