High everyone.

In another thread on here, someone put a link to a site that finds the IP address of an email sender, this gives you the rough area of where the email was sent from, so thanks to the person who added the link.:)

I have now used this devise to check a couple of email enquirys i have had.
One of the enquires i had was a lady asking for a quote for her wedding, the Wedding is going to be in the grounds of her house, so she added her post code to the email.
I then cheked her address and it was legit.

Now here is the strange bit.

When i checked where the email was sent from, it was sent from America.:eek:

Her email was a Hotmail email address i dont know if this makes a differance?
as i am always a bit warry of enquirys with hotmail email addresses.

Any thoughts?:confused:

Because Hotmail is web based and they have many mail servers based in the US. What the script is picking up is the authentication handshake from the US servers and your ISPs server. You could be anywhere in the world using hotmail, the "front-end" web interface you're presented with will almost certainly be based in the US, so when she clicks the SEND button the US server sends the mail.

I wouldn't read too much in to it.

I have now put her name and postcode in the bt online phonebook search bar, and the same surname is comming up at that address, so looks fine.

No, its just that the lady in question first emailed in December and i sent her a quote, then heard nothing until 2 days ago when she asked if i was still availible, so i emailed her back saying that i am still availible and i have heard nothing more from her.

Also i have been a little bored, thats another reason.:D

I use several email addresses but even my own email-forwarding from my own web domain isn't registered to me. It's registered to my web designer (although this will change when it expires this year!).

Therefore if anyone looks deep in to my email code they'll still not find out where I'm from.

Gaza, people who know me will know that I'm up on scams. I gave 11 years of my life to Royal Mail and I knew every scam that there was in the postal business. These scams are easily transferrable to email and telephone. The biggest defense against scams is knowledge and I make it my business to know all I can about these things. As you seem a bit worried that your emails might be genuine, I'm thinking about putting a guide together to teach people what to look out for in scam emails, phone calls, letter. This might help people be more aware when they do receive these things and genuine enquiries are not treated with such suspicion.
