View Full Version : Amp purchased

I took peoples advice here and sought out a reasonable amp, secondhand. I didn't have any particular amp in mind as long as it is reasonably powerful, or put another way up to the job without pushing boundries.

I am an avid fan of Ebay having multiple ebay accounts and running one of my businesses on there for 7 years. Yes, you can get your fingers burned, but I get more than my fair share of good fortune.

Anyway, this week I bought a 'package' from a chap in Newcastle, where I have just come back from. I was after the amp mainly, but the very badly worded listing actually had a lot more there than you might think at first glance.

What I ended up with is this:
2 x Marshall 125W 15" speakers (alright, bit low powered, but nice speakers all the same)
2 x ARK 15" speakers (nice but no idea at all the wattage)
1 x mcGreggor RS1000 amplifier (Very nice indeed)
Numark CDN22 dual CD deck (almost new)
Numark CM1000 mixer (almost new)
Flight case for both the above (new)
New Acme Boogie light
New Acme Firebird light
1 x mushroom light (works)
1 x 4 bulb traffic light (like new)
1 x 1/2 moon light (perfect)
1 x 12" mirror ball with power motor (brand new)
2 x Very strong but lightweight light stands with T bars, as new
HUGE bag of cables, speakons, XLRs, 2 x Mic, 2 x good headphones, spare bulbs, extension leads, gaffer tape, cloth (not star :( )
CD's are 6 originals and about 100 Pirates (straight in the bin they went) Originals are compliation, 70's party hits etc
Request books (bin job)

Considering the Numarks and flight case are worth about £250 on their own, I am QUITE happy at £435 the lot.

Now, anyone know anything about ARK speakers? Where oh where will I find out what wattage they are? I will take some pics and post later if I can.

Somebody tell me I did good please..... I am feeling a little light on the pocket, but suitable impressed with the amount of gear I just fitted into a standard Focus hatchback!

I thought you were just after an amp? While on one side you might have got a good deal i do think you would of been better off spending the money on a peavey 1500 amp (about 320 brand new) and suitable case for it too. Money talks with disco equipment and the best way to save money is buy quality.

You tried the speakers yet? despite the power isnt everything heard some good (but rather low volume) sounds coming out of a 125 but terrible ones out of 500's!

Well, just been playing. The Marshalls are spot on. Yes, they are only 125w RMS per side, but they do have a good kick in a 10ft x 7ft spare bedroom LOL.:D

Amp is excellent. I obviously won't crank it through these speakers.

Haven't decided yet, but I will probably keep the Numarks for a back up set and sell the Speakers on. The Amp will stay for certain, even as just a good standby/second one. I will do some calculations later. The speakers are floor standing, both about 2ft x 20" x 12". Not big by any means. Again, useful as spare gear if nothing else.

I will keep the lights and stands. Mix and match time.

I agree about that Peavey Amp.

Wait til you get to a small venue like a village hall..... Then when it gets full of people as well?

Out of interest why did the guy sell all this stuff? had he given up?

Yes, he was about 20. Working full time. dad had a stroke - met him too, nice chap. I think he was under pressure from family to do a 'proper' job. Shame.
I will want speakers of around 350w RMS IMHO and an new amp to support that. All in good time. In the meantime, if anyone can enlighten me on these ARK speakers I would be obliged. NO information on them anywhere. I may have to opne one up to find out.

My mistake on the mixer. It is in fact a Numark DM 1090X, which I think came out in 1999! Looks exactly like teh Numark CM1. Works perfectly though so not worried.

Main thing I have gained is a nice portable complete CD/mixer unit that will definitely be in the van for spare.

Now, if anyone has a hammer I have a minor adjustment to make on a CD entitled: HAVEN PARTY album with...... BLACK LACE!!!!!! :bang: :Help:

If its a Haven album check it does not have Rik n Nik on as well, as they do a lot of work for haven caravan site and go down well with kids - provided the cd is legal of course.

I think a lot depends on how honest the seller was. My experience of ebay and "nearly new" usually means worn out and only good for the tip !

My advice would be to try all the gear now and if its faulty get it sent back or negotiate a discount.

If the speakers arent marked on the outside what wattage/ohmage they are then you might have to take the back off and look on the speaker itself.

My experiences with ebay amps is they arent up to the job, the real output power doesnt match that on the specs by a mile.

Hopefully your luckier than me !

Thanks Nigel. I talked at great length with an engineer at McGregor before buying. this amp was discontinued 4 years ago, but was in his words 'the best amp they ever made'. He didn't try to sell me anything at all and told me it would be a great amp - of course if it works, which it does.

I have checked everything and it all works. I have been buying from ebay for over 7 years and very rarely get a bad'un. The only fault I have found is one of the T bar stands is broken. Not even interested in them TBH, will be using a 4ft prolight stand with overhead light bar anyway.
