Laptop screen smashed during club brawl

Was at my residency on saturday night, got to 2am, 2 guys started fighting infront of my dj booth, the fight got bigger as always, doorman arrived, but someone threw a bottle into the fight, missed the fight, came flying past my head straight into my laptop screen, smashed it. It kept playing though, trouble is i couldnt see through the cracked screen so i had to do the last hour on a few spare cds i had. Getting the club to pay for it isnt really an issue because i am covered for accidental damage, its just the inconvenience of not having it while its being repaired.

Dont you have a second laptop as back up.

I always have 2 cortex units on a gig and I also own 2 Laptops.

Dont usually get bottles thrown at me though--certainly have had bread rolls flying though;)

I dont have a spare laptop, in hindsight I should have one, i carry a back up of cd's to get me through the night, which i used. Just though i would share my problem with you, its getting picked up tomorrow for repair. Just a bit gutted about it really, the bottle was thrown at the fight but the guy was obviously a bad shot!!! idiots

something i thinking of doing is i have a laptop with a broken screen already knocking about
so my plan is the mount a flat screen in the flight case lid then its protected and it's nothing extra to carry as if its done right you could just close the lid with it still mounted better still mount a touch screen

Hmm I think as soon as fight started I would have turned the music down or off. Obviously I do not know the place you were in but I have that clause in my contract for private gigs as well as pubs and clubs.

As far as the laptop goes a second one has already been mentioned so I will not go onto that except to say a second hand low spec laptops are cheap to pick up and would be enough to get you through an emergency.

Failing that a metal cage surrounding you sounds a good idea :D :D

when i used to do mobiles i would turn the music off but ive never done it in a big club, normal procedure is to do a security announcement and let them boys do their job with as less fuss as possible.

A metal cage is on order lol

In the mid 90's, I had a residency at a cracking little indy club in Derby, and the DJ booth was surrounded by a floor to ceiling cage, with a full size cage door lockable from the inside. Never saw the point of it at the time...perhaps I was wrong!

Not quite on the same scale, but on Christmas eve I did a gig and most people had been on the bear all day, so by the time I started at 7.30 most people were well sozzled.
It was actually a good night with no real problems, but one fella was obviously looking to wing somebody up and was just pestering everybody all night.
He was doing some kind of drunken dance to some girls and he dropped his pint in the middle of the dancefloor.
First thing I thought was :Censored: this isn't good as quite a few people were dancing, so quick thinking I dropped the music volume and asked over the mic for everybody to move away from the dancfloor so staff could clean the beer and glass up.
Had no problems but when all was restarted one of the staff left a wet floor sign in the middle and asked them all to give it 10 mins to dry fully.
The same buffoon thought it would be a good idea to pick the sign up and started dancing with it.
A couple of staff tried to take it off him but he kept tugging it back, the 2 door staff came over to him and tried to get it off him but he just sat down in the middle of the floor hugging it tight and telling them to :Censored: off.
I could see the bloke getting a bit out of hand so I shut the music off and announced to him over the mic, if he didn't give the sign back then there would be no more music, he had a bit of a mumble and gave it back, to which I said thank you much appreciated and asked one of the staff to get him a new drink from me.
He was perfectly fine after that and thanked me for the bear and shook my hand, it could have ended up being an ugly situation.

I did sort of think after did I do the right thing in getting involved, but at the end of the day it resolved the issue.

Years ago when I played in a Band in the 60s it was quite common for fights to start--usually the client said--keep playing no one will notice:bang:

Yes, in a club you normally keep the music going unless told otherwise by security.
Turning the music down will only draw attention to the problem and potentially make matters much worse and make the security teams work harder.
In the club I used to do, the only one's aware of a fight were those close by, and anyone who got in the way when culprits were being dragged out:D

Mind you, if it had been me and equipment was damaged I would have switched off and gone home, to me that level of violence / disturbance would be enough to warrant shutting the place for the rest of the night:mad:
