My First Cancellation of 2009

Well its now the 27th January and tonight i found out that my gig this Saturday has been cancelled.(I had to phone the customer up again as they did not return my call on Sunday).I did send out a contract with my t&cs which they signed and returned.I have only got the deposit that they paid at the time of booking,so i probably have very little chance of getting my full ammount as the t&cs state.

I hope that this will be my first and last cancellation of the year.Worst thing is that last week i turned a booking away for that date!

Why do you say that? Send them an invoice, if it's not paid within 30 days then file a small claim. Business is business, my gig this Saturday was cancelled too, but I asked for full payement as per my contract, I still have bills to pay!

It was a charity fundraising night with the ticket sales going towards paying me.I do find it strange that when i called her tonight she said that she was going to phone me later tonight.I asked as to why it was cancelled and was told somethings come up in the family(Personal i think),so if this has genuinly been cancelled why was i not told before.If any tickets had been sold will they get a refund now that its suppose to be cancelled???????

The venue and area where it was taking place is not the area where you want to ruffle any feathers,If you do then you may just get your van smashed in\tyres slashed ect.

So i dont think i will be chasing them up for a cancellation fee.

Only had to chase up payment the once, very recently too. I didn't have to do much chasing though. When the client called to cancel I reminded him of the cancellation policy, and he sent the cheque to me within a few days.

Three times I've used it (not always for disco debts) and three times I've banked a cheque (with fees refunded) without even going to court.

I have. Twice last year. Once just by sending an invoice and covering letter and the other time I used...

Got a cheque the very next day that the court issued the paperwork and as Martin says it also covers the £25 it costs to use the service.

This is not a one off, we are in difficult times.

Fundraising functions scare the hell out of me--the organisers are invariably well intentioned disorganised people.

I go out my way to put them off booking--by explaining the problems of selling tickets in a recession and that I will want my money if they cancel under 30days---keeping the NRBF just isnt enough:eek:

Im currently expecting a problem with one transferred from a date in October to February --if that happens Ill be going for my full fee within 7 days of sending my invoice---I had to turn away a booking for twice the fee on the same date--:eek: :eek: :eek:

People organising fund raising events often just dont understand the economics of running a function--let alone a business like ours.

A common problem is people booking a disco for charity then not selling enough tickets.

Thats why I prefer birthday parties, engagement parties, pub gigs etc.

Still no reason to be negative--seems to be plenty of people with money to spend booking Weddings and the like---we dont argue---just take the bookings :D

i'm a firm believer of keeping positive, very difficult when the media is doing exactly the opposite, doom and gloom!


so what i have no bookings? i'm getting lots of enquiries now, and they are finally at very nice venues!

seems i just started out in the wrong area of the marketplace and a switch in focus has helped.

That's sods law.

I often find that if I only have one booking for a particular month, the next enquiry for that month will be for the one date I'm already booked.

Fortunately I've never been in that situation.

I did have two cancellations last year, but they were both cancelled more than a month before the gigs, and under my terms & conditions I can only request full payment if a cancellation is made LESS than a month before the gig.

I hope my run of bad luck isn't rubbing off on you Gary:D from the cancelations I had in December I got paid from the ones that had returned the signed contract and deposit, there was a couple I didn't get paid for as they only booked 1 or 2 weeks before the date and never returned the booking forms.

You could always offer them a sweetner by telling them you will give them a discount for a future event within 6 months, up to you how much you offer and could be handy if you get regular gigs off them.
If it was a one off and not likley or bothered about repeat bookings push them for the full balance, like a few have said before you still have bills to pay:(

Would you believe it i have yet another cancellation due to poor ticket sales.This time it was the slimming world peoples party but they have only sold 20 tickets and as a result decided to cancel the party.My gig last saturday was cancelled for ther same reason and now this is for next saturday.Probably not much chance of getting anything from them either because it was the ticket sales that were paying for the disco.

I did have to turn work away for next friday because i said i was booked out.Probably not much chance of getting a gig now at this late date.

Depends if his contract covers him. Charity or not, I'd be following this up and requesting full payment (as per my contract) if the event was cancelled this late in the day.

Security - they book you then at least they know the have a disco. I had a gig not too long ago that booked me, payed deposit and still booked a second disco. Both of us turned up :eek: The other guy did not take deposit etc so you can guess what happened.
