Most Unusual Venue ?

Following on from a Gallery thread about 'Kitchen DJ's' whats the most unusual venue or location you've ever played ?

Mine has to be a 'portaloo' style temporary kiosk on the riverbank for Charity Duck Racing. :)

Probably a Dental Practice reception area - that awful Dentist pong for 2 hours!!

1) An island in the middle of the Thames, access being via a "ferry" which was actually no more than a metal raft which was propelled by turning a handle.

2) A toilet roof.

I used to play at Clearwell Caves, 100 ft underground, halloween party. Equipment used to covered in clay and mud, absolute nightmare get in, walk down a tunnel then just a massive drop, used to take 2 hours just to get the gear in the venue. I also did a silent disco on the eurostar train going through the tunnel. It was being filmed for an advert for the train to show corporate clients they could hire a carriage for conferences and meals and even a disco.

I have two.


In november 2007, I was asked to provide a mobile disco for a corporate company. They then told me the venue.

It was a luxury ship, which was going to be in West Germany. Lol. Took the gig with expenses all paid. One of my best gigs ever. :)



The other one was for a school fair. Not much of a disco, but to play lots of music for the kids to enjoy. That was in the back of a horse trailer. Did smell a bit but hey, got on with the job and turned out to be a great day.

My strangest location was in Cannock Wood, for a team building event, all the guests were camping out that night and they decided to do singing around the campfire with a karaoke system.

They kindly put up a 6ft x 6ft gazebo with open sides, it then proceeded to pour with rain for most of the event so there was me, small table with mixer, monitor, speakers tucked under the table, running off a generator, which was too small (even though i told them what size i'd need).

At the end of the event, i had about 75m of woodland to negotiate in complete darkness.

That said, it was quite fun and completely different!

We got put in a tiny room in a hotel once.
I reckon we could get about 10 dancers in and the room was full !

In the middle of a local woods, in a gazeebo with a generater...Thinking back it was probably illegal, but heey i was (am?) young! :)

Couple of places actually:

Tescos in Blackwater. It's huge and they were having a staff party many moons ago.

Carpet Right in Guildford. I was set up inside and had to tell people of the new deals etc. It was a one day job....and boring.

As for proper private functions - A farm. I was DJing on hay stacks and there were chickens running about.

I do a job every chrismas for Progress Group (Power Distribution). They turn their warehouse into a massive function room and line it with the innerads from a marquee.

i had to DJ in tesco canteen at xmas, they would come in for their dinner and then sing on the karaoke, and then go back to work haha

also got hired to setup in booker cash and carry in the main aisle, had to announce special offers etc

for several summers i dj'd on a riverboat, 2 hours up the river and 2 hours back down!

Two that spring to mind , one was in the grandstand at Reading speedway stadium now gone alas , the other was in a ladies sexy underwear shop next door to my shop in Henley on Thames during the day , that did have it's bonuses :D

The 02 shop in Hull. An open day for them which resulted in full payment and also a good discount on a mobile phone.

Also the deep submarium in Hull. We worked in the twilight zone that night with all the sharks and that swimming over. It was fantastic. The only problem was the job was an awful lot of messing about and i undercharged them not knowing what the access was like and also how much the staff messed me about with the setup.

Well it was quite funny my dog popped round to see me , after about 20 mins one of the girls came in to tell me Jessie had disappeared, but then saw where she was .
Although I did have to fit watch batteries between tracks :eek:

I had a weird one the other week inside the metro centre. It was in an italian shop which would have been ok but they wanted us to play in the outside eating area. This was in a 'village' which purely contains eateries. Being such a large place we found the sound travelled really well, the whole area containing about 12 eateries turned their own music off, due to my sound travelling so much, and there were claims a french restaurant 3 doors down had people dancing. I actually had an enquiry from them but was met with the 'How much' quote. A lot of attention was also gained from shoppers returning to the car - I did not realise the advertising potential.

Have done many shows, especially shop openings, literally out of the back of the van also.

I done one for the RAF in their massive hangers before they went out to Afganistan. It was a very moving, but fun evening! Those boys know how to party!! Also, there were Apache GunShips either side of the Rig which looked very cool!

Once did a 40th Birthday Party in a Indoor Swimming Pool(not in the pool but poolside)it was a hotel with its own swimming pool the client had to purchase all rooms over looking the pool as the function finished at 1am.

A couple that spring to mind.....
In an equestrian centre, setup slap in the middle on an agricultural flatbed trailer. It had a disconcerting lean and bounced slightly at one end. I had the goalpost set up on it.
Had to buy a roll of flex and make 2 x 40m extensions to get power from the err.... commentry box which was somewhat elevated.
Enjoyed that one, it can be quite refreshing to do something a little different venue wise.

Done one in a Maccy D's. Took over an area of raised seating. Free Maccy D's all day, not especially a good thing, but hey, it was free:D

Local children's home once, set up in the kitchen and peered through the serving hatch.

So i squeezed 2 speakers on the floor facing me, with amp and cd player on top, with cd case leaning on the top of the twin cd ( numark wooded one with 3 inches of wood at the top) and the wall, but the music cant be too loud, but they must be able to hear it around the corner out of sight!!!

Oh yes!

The toilets were in a restaurant with a very high ceiling, and the toilet roof where I set up was about 15 feet above gound level & only accessable by a ladder!

When people wanted requests, they had to climb the ladder & I would see their head appear at the side!

Did you have angle brackets fitted to the bottom of the gear so it could be screwed down to stop it bogging off to the other side of the boat?:D
Vinyl would have been entertaining........;) imagine trying to cue up when the waters rough? WAY HEY!!!
I rekon it would be like DJing when your completely hammered, except it's not just you staggering around:eek::D
