Personally,

I wouldn't bother. There's so many other DJ's in there chance are the only calls you'll get is the "hey mate, how much for a disco" calls who are only after a £60 disco.

But there again everyone to their own.

Yellow Pages has been done to death on here several times and the general consensus is always that it's a waste of money UNLESS you're happy dealing with tyre kickers and working for under £100 a night.

Save it, spend your money on web advertising!

Ask yourself how you get numbers for services, if you're anything like me, my computer finds me everything I need.

Whilst personally I do not find YP beneficial (apart from the free listings) I do know of others who do well out of it. Like everything its what works for you. Many people recommend spending on web advertising. Again personally this does not work for me. I spend very little on advertising, prefering to get out and meet people ie venue managers etc. I also ensure I follow up all gigs with customer satisfaction questionnaires and build up a rapport with customers and venue owners, which in turn brings a lot of repeat bookings.

When i advertised in YP, each year, they came up with another reason why it didn't work and that we should spend more money on getting it right.

It was something along the lines of:- yr 1, make your advert reversed out, yr 2, take a bigger one, yr3 go white, yr4 change the wording, yr5 change the ad, go smaller, yr6 go full colour, then went for a small presence incase a previous client want's to make contact, but has ended now.

It seemed as it was a different rep each year, with a different excuse why it didn't work.

IMO YP is a dead duck now if a PA to the MD wants to book an event, i can't see them finding the book and then making the calls, they are more likely to google you, if a bride and groom want to find a DJ, they'll go on the internet or go on a reccomendation from friends or their venue.

I wonder how many people actually pick up their YP book and use it now????

Yellow Pages can be quite effective.....

Well I can only say that I am one of the ones that does very well from YP. My ad is one of the the regular square box ads and I certainly am not a sub £100 DJ....My average fee ranges from £300-£500 and I get get most of my new work from YP. 1 gig and the ads paid for.

I think it also has a lot to do with the quality of the ad there are a lot of very poor ads in the YP especially in the dj section, dont rely on YP's designers (cough) they get allocated approximately 10mins per ad to design.

If you want it to work, pay a professional they know all the tricks.

My local council run recycling centre now accept the Yellow Pages, they didn't used to. I'm amazed that they still bother to print them, I haven't used one in years.

I think Yellow Pages should cut out the middle man & just deliver all their books to the recycling centre direct from the printers.

But then the pikeys would resort to other means, like t'internet, and we'd have to deal with them all again

The proplem with dj's is that shall we say 80 to 90% of bookings are for saturdays. So if you got a wide coverage you'd have 5 or 6 people ring in a week but all after the same date? Bit different for other buisnesses because they can spread the work out. Like been said before google is your way forward because......

*Can set a budget so your in controll of how much you spend
*You can cover whatever areas you want.
*Going on holiday? not a proplem just suspend your ads
*Like myself i just secured a saturday night slot at a nightclub so cut the budget right down. If i had a yellow pages ad i'd be working at the club to pay off the ad thats getting me calls that i cant do! haha

You need to think about how much work you would expect for this amount of outlay. That is more than my total advertising budget for a year.

I've just completed my advertising review for last year and it makes interesting reading with regards to YP.

Total cost of advertising in YP - £598 inc for two ads in one directory (one in Discos - Mobile and one in the wedding section). Both ads are white on black and stand out a mile.

Total income from YP referrals (people who saw the ad in YP) - almost £4,500.

Worked for me!

Incidentally, I believe that the guy I sometimes sub for spends around the same as your quote, Flatliners. He's a multi-op with about 7-8 rigs and he does really well. But he hasn't got a web presence so YP is his primary advertising channel. He's been advertising there for years.

Roughly how many gigs would that equate to Dazzy ??? Just wondering if uiries are the lower paid gigs but higher volume or if you do get higher paid gig enquiries. I know of quite a few local lads who swear by YP.

Im having a go with the sponsored online advertising this year, but wouldnt bother with the book.

An awful lot of people still don't have web access (especially around here!) so the YP book is still a highly viable marketing channel. Everyone with a landline gets a free YP book - that's one heck of a potential customer base.

More folk use the website than the book these days.

Who told you this? A quick look at the Yell Group Annual Report for the financial year ending 31st March 2008 shows that, whilst internet usage is on the increase, books still form the most widely used Yell product here in the UK (and the rest of the world for that matter). It's KPIs show that printed products were over 4 times more profitable for Yell than it's internet products. Businesses wouldn't spend this level of advertising budget if it didn't yield proportionate results. This report was compiled by Price Waterhouse Cooper for it's shareholders and the financial markets so it has to be more accurate than your assumption.

I've just had a look at my bookings for last year - forgot to add in a couple of shows I did in November so the total value of bookings from YP is £4,880. This is for 25 gigs ranging in value from £100 (kids party) to £295 (wedding disco). Higher value wedding bookings came from the wedding fayres we did in 2007.

Ouch, I just signed up for another year.

It is just a small ad at £100 for the year.

Its time to start asking clients where they got my number from.

I can better that.

Total cost of all my online advertising on about 40 different sites: About £150 less that your one Yellow Pages ad.

Total income from online referrals (people who saw my ad on various online listing sites): A five figure sum.

because it got me thinking yellow plage were trying to sell me somethin there they put discount coupons in the front of the yellow pages and a star on your add to let people know that you have an offer
then i had thought of putting in my add say a 15% discount for people who quote yellow pages when they ring then all i do is up my price a tad to cover the 15%.
then you would know who used the yello pages
they also mentioned giving me a free 0800 number or something and they could monitor the calls i am getting
might either do the newcasatle one or cumbria
still not sure

DeckstarDeluxe
28-01-2009, 11:31 PM
the 0800 is a number they put in the ad and it diverts the call to your landline number. This way they can monitor how many calls you get.

I think you should be able to bargin a good price ive cancelled my two ad's recently because of the downturn and prefer google. I think now only older people who want a wedding dj will look in yellow pages otherwise most people use internet now.

When i told the yellow pages rep i was on google she said word for word

"thats good, i cant argue with that so we wont discuss a listing on yell.com"

Your basing your post on the assumption that my post was an assumption. :D

I also got the same report, directly from Yell, with a more detailed breakdown of the "Disco - Mobile" classification of Yell.com. Whilst i cannot say for certain with regards to the rest of the country, the Yell.com searches in Cumbria, were gery high and warranted the expendature.

Granted for folk who dont have the Internet, the book will be invaluable, but for those who do...who is going to spend 10 minutes looking for the right section, then searching the lists/boxes for a "local" disco when they can go on the website and type "Mobile Disco" "Workington" (for example). Do you have a web presence with Yell Daz. If you dont, it will be interesting to see (as a social experiment) if your bookings/takings through Yell drop off year after year. Not a pop, would just be an interesting effect of the internet in society :)

i think the charges for yell.com are very very high

anyone can be listed in the yellow pages for £90 (4 lines) or £150 (8 lines), yet its a minimum of £300 for yell.com and more if they sell you the addons

Up until now I have always advertised in YP but for the last 3 years I have ended up reducing the size of the advert as I am fed up with people phoning up looking fpr, sixty quid sid. When I give them a price they generally reply "as much as that" but then I exhibit at a wedding fayre give the client the price (not the same person) and they reply "oh is that all" you can't win :bang:

Mine did progressively, over the last 5 years.

Now NO enquiries for 6 months at least-cant remember the last one.

Cancelled it but got a call today to say do I still want the free ad?

Free ad--I dont have a business phone line:confused:

A friend who is in my business ( Barn Dance) and runs a full agency has cancelled his YP uk wide coverage which used to cost thousands.

To quote him--everyone has moved to the net

Those who can afford a Barn Dance that is.

BTW Rob I prefer Tescos own brand---its a better read:D :D :D
