Lighting: Fill the room or the dance floor?

Ok guys and gals, what do you do with your lighting?


Do you either:

A - Full the whole room with lights. For example lighting shining in all directions?

or

B - Keep lighting strictly on the dance floor?


I usually keep all of my lights programed on the dance floor apart from the dot lights as they have a wide spread. I feel like it invites people to come up and have a dance.


What do you do???

Main concentration on the dance floor with an impossibled or stormbird filling the room with a little light but not too much. Each venue can differ according to room layout though, and of course what the customer wants.

impossibled or mystics pointed towards the floor. Kam cluster at ceiling and other lights to add if venue requires it.

most lights cover the whole room as they are scanners.
mirror ball also covers the whole room.

i dont think you can really answer this as different venues lend themselves to different types of lighting so what works one week might not work the next.

OK, Serious time. ( How I hate doing that. :( :( ) Some venues have little or no ambient light, it's all on. or all off. In such venues, you have to light the venue. In the better venues, tasteful lighting around the edges, allows you to concentrate on the dancefloor, always a better option where possible. With the more basic effects, like the Geni XTC et al, the difficulty was always lighting anything other than the floor immediately in front of the deckstand! ;)

Depends on the size of the venue, i tend to have 2 acme boogies pointing up to fill the ceiling, (as most men when they dance look at their feet or the ceiling!!! :D :D ), an impossibled on the floor which also by it's nature fills most of a medium sized room and 2 scanners which as pointed out will rove unless dmx'd to stay on the dance floor area.
It's up to how i feel, if there are alot of not so young guests i will reposition lights to avoid upsetting them, other than that, why not let everyone benefit from the lights....!!!:cool:

The answer to this really depends on what you are using and the size of the venue. Moonflowers are easy to position on the dance floor by their very nature, but scanners, barrels and moving heads aren't unless you DMX them.

I was in one of my regular Hotels last night which has a very small dance floor in a very small room. I used the EFX500, 2 pars and a Nebula laser, which covered the ceiling, dance floor and part of the other walls.

The Vorma has 3 off 300 watt halogen lamps inside it.
They rotate in time to the music.
There are about 60 coloured lenses on the front.

I dont offer 50% more lighting, I just fit into the venue what I can.
