Ever been heckled before? if so what did you say back?

I always associate heckling with dodgy comedians.

If someone tries heckling a DJ, it's unlikely they'll be heard over the music.

However, although it's not quite the same, I'm sure we've all had drunk/rude people come up & accuse us of being a crap DJ etc.

On the occasions when that's happened to me, I've found the best thing is to agree with them. They are expecting you to disagree with them, in which case an argumnent is likely (this might be what they're looking for anyway), so agreeing with them tends to leave them surprised & speechless.

Not heckled as such. I had an amp die on me and the crowd all whooped and hollered. The spare amp was in the rack case so the music was back on in seconds.

I didn't say anything. No point in drawing further attention to it. :)

I do similar, without trying to sound too cocky. It's the same as when they as the immortal 'do you not have any decent music', to which I reply 'no, I only play rubbish'.

Have never had an occasion when a majority of the crowd has turned on me (apart from when I won't play on :p ), although have had occasions where one individual has tried to bad mouth me to the whole crowd. They will never learn that preaching that the DJ is rubbish to a crowd of people dancing does not work.

One occasion was a christmas party when the manager of a local ASDA had too much :beer1: :beer1: and rubbished me to everyone present. Whilst on my way to the toilet I politely informed him that I shopped at ASDA and would be in the store first thing on the monday morning to give him an appraisal of his store in front of HIS customers. :D

I've been 'heckled' loads of times, but people always find out that it's a big mistake to heckle a man with a mic....

Funnily enough, I went to Jongleurs last week and there was big signs up everywhere saying stuff like "Don't heckle the comedians". They'll be signs up saying "Don't enjoy yourself" soon....

Some comedians i know thrive on hecklers and rely on them sometimes to get things going! I expect there are 2 different types of the hecklers at a comedy gig, the heckler who shuts up after being put down and then theres the drunk man/woman who wont shut up and ruins for everybody else!

I experienced heckling once, it was a christmas party joiner night in a hotel, about 150 people, it was 10 pm and coffee was still being served but there was 3 tables of people itching to get dancing, i was playing an xmas compilation cd, as i walked to the decks to get the night started some bloke shouted out really loud for the whole room to hear 'for god sake put some decent music on'. I grabbed the mic quickly and said 'thank you sir, i bet you wish your wi**y was as big as your mouth' (the joke wasnt that old 9 years ago) to which got a massive laugh and a cheer from the crowd.

Thankfully the bloke took it as a joke and didnt try and punch my lights out.

I got heckled by drag Act i was working with. them using my system because i played the wrong track for his/her :confused: set, right at the start.

Soon shut up when they realised i had a mic and it was their dodgy track listing, it was a usual xmas gig for me so im on really good terms with all the guests and could get away with more than he/she could!

I've been 'heckled' once (only time I have ever heard it anyway) and it was last year when I was in a town centre venue. I actually recognised the guy who was heckling me and let's just say that we weren't big fans of eachother. I didn't even know he was in the venue as it was packed...it was only at the end when the lights went up that I saw him about halfway down the venue stood by the bar with women around him. He is a DJ too as far as I know and I was told that he wanted to DJ at the same venue but got the thumbs down as he was no good. For some reason he decided to shout out something to me which was as follows:

"Second rate DJ!! Second rate DJ!!"

He should have known that I had a microphone with me because I really embarassed him and got the girlies around him giggling when I replied with...

"First rate :Censored: !! First rate :Censored: !!

He's been in since and hasn't dared say anything...

Funny really never been hecked but last sunday i did a gig at this pub ive been doing for nearly two years. The ads all around the pub is for a "cheesy disco" and naturally thats what i played with some rnb and dance as its a young crowd. As one song was fading out (as I was putting Reef on next) this one guy shouted "play some decent music". Course dancefloor was packed at the time and hands went straight up in the area as soon as reef came on. I did grin somewhat!

I expect there are 2 different types of the hecklers at a comedy gig, the heckler who shuts up after being put down and then theres the drunk man/woman who wont shut up and ruins for everybody else!

The latter description is by far in the majority and most heckling really does spoil the show. I DJ at a comedy club occasionally (In competition with Jongleurs in Bristol), and heckling generally derails the comedian (even those that deal with them successfully).


As for heckling, once, at a corporate Christmas do, I'd just taken the mic back after the CEO's speech and this idiot in the front piped up, "why don't you learn to DJ properly!", to which I replied, "Sir, why don't you learn to dance to the music that everyone else is enjoying." :D Cheers all round :D

I love a bit of abuse. Thats why i turn down five star hotel weddings for 18th's sometimes for a change of scenery. They are actually more fun than the posh ones and more understanding of any problems that may arise.

Im the man with the mic so i always win anyway.

Had someone run off with my wireless the other day so i just plugged in my other mic and took the :Censored: out of him. he soon brought it back.

While doing an 18th, I was asked to announce Last Orders - while doing so a lad in front of the speaker shouted "F:Censored: off you W:Censored: er", so (without missing a beat) I said "And the jolly same to you Sir - would you like me to get Security to help you with that?"

(Cue lots of ribbing from his mates as security come over for a Word with him...)
