As far as I know they do. One of the TA lads has applied to be a "Special"

very true.

i think becoming a special is either a way of putting something back into the community or trying it before applying for a full time role.

the pcso is a different role.

I used to be a "hobby bobby". It was a bloody nightmare. The regulars hate you because you're nicking their overtime and the public treat you with the same contempt as they treat the regulars. Furthermore, if you've got it in the back of your mind (and in my experience, most specials do, myself included) that being a special will aid an application to the regulars, exactly the opposite is true. The police virtually never recruit new PCs from the special constabulary - why start to pay for it when you're getting it for free? I'm sure you already have given it loads of thought...but I'd give it a little more.

I used to be an army cadet and at a county show one year I was put in charge of the coach park at the pipe band competition. My role was dead simple. To direct the coaches, from all over the country, to where they should park.

After a couple of hours the coach park was full. A coach full of people from a scottish police force pipe band (somewhere in highlands if I remember correctly) pulled up. The driver asked where he should park and I told him, as the coach park was full, he should park at a public car park down the road. He wasn't happy with this (he'd had a long drive and was "miffed" to say the least!) so he called over a special and, after a little chat, decided that he was going to squeeze in. I told him no he wasn't but he said the special told him it was alright. I said I was responsible for coach parking and not the special and he said "Tough!".

The result? Two other coaches ended up damaged by the plonker trying to squeeze in and a complaint lodged to the local Chief Constable about this special (special case if you ask me! :D). The following year I was back in charge of the coach park with no specials in sight! And everything went great that year!
