my first gig this friday

well we took our first booking and its a kids school disco for 2 hours
were doing games etc

any advice on the playlist??

im thinking keep it simple with the likes of s club7 vengaboys cha cha song etc

What age are the kids? 8-10yrs or older they are gonna also want some commercial RnB, Dance etc. They are a bit more savvy about 'tunes' than you'd think, my 8yr old's favourite tune of the moment is 'Akon - Beautiful' so don't underestimate them! :)

Which school is it? Can give you some pointers on best loading places/etc if you want. Like Tony said, it depends on the age/year group. If its Secondary then Barbie Girl/Vengaboys etc goes down well. But that will be fairly lost on primary kids who will only be into music from 2-4 years ago, upto the latest stuff.

High School Musical, Mama Mia (make sure its the OST, i got cauglt out playing Abba...which apparantly is different :) ), Camp Rock, Miley cyrus/Hannah Montanna etc for primarty kids too.

Hey Mate,

Keep them active, and if you do play any games with them keep it quick so that those watching do not get bored.

Music wise, Chart stuff they know + all the action party dances (if you do them)

Do not touch Bob the Builder with a barge pole. It doesnt wash, trust me. 5 year olds are into Ben 10/mama mia/etc. Trust me ive a 5 year old boy who would kill me if i made him watch bob. :)

Yes, 5 years will want different to 11yrs.

To be honest, i cant understand the school having one disco for all of KS2?

I also work for the Cumbria County Council, mainly in primary schools and you can guarantee that the school splits the activities down into blocks. I.e. Yr 3 & 4 and Yr 5 & 6 because the 11 year olds dont want to do activities with the 6 year olds.

Are you doing one disco Leigh? or are they splitting the ages down?

Same here, they want completely different music. Young ones want Bob The Builder and older ones want Lady Gaga!

its not ideal numbers but the school is doing a charity thing

but my mrs company has split everthing down with games etc under 7's over 7's etc
also one of her clients who does puppets is going to do a free 20 min show
to help her out

games will be i think just waiting for confimation and a running list

statues, space hopper races,limbo,balloon race and dances such as cha cha superman

ive been gven a copy of hgh school musical 3 dvd was thiking of giving it to a child for best dancer or something is copys ok or do parents get funny about it?

I'm now in the same boat as you - I've done quite a few kids parties before, but tommorrow night I've got my first Disco for the local Junior school - lukcily they're breaking it into two 1hr 15min sessions, one for yrs 3/4 and one for yrs 5/6 so I can tailor the content to the audience a bit more, but I'm very concious that this is a whole boatload of kids in each session (estimated at between 60-110!!) and not an easy audience either.

However, apparently they've had a "average" DJ (not my words) for the last few years, so hopefully I can't be any worse!

Veo Veo is amazing, they ALL know it! I tried it as a one off a couple of years ago and it had the place bouncing. Any kid that has been on a package holiday with Kids Club/Kids Disco in the evening will know it.

My daughter informs me that Nick Jr. have a radio applet that has all he songs she wants for her birthday (She'll be 5 in two weeks). Dora is also on there with Celebration & We are family, worth a listen to be honest.

we mixed it up with bumps,statues,chairs,balloon games

dance songs were cha cha,music man,superaman,

i tempted fate and put a song called big fish little fish and it went down a treat:eek:

we got the kids to do the raffle

the kids looked like they were in to HSM so we focused on that with tracks by same diffrence alphabeat hairspray
and ended the night with them all dancing to were all in this together

would like to thank dynamic discos for some cd's and everyone who give us advice

i took some pics so ill try and upload some time

No problem pal. Glad to help you out and that you enjoyed it. Its worth putting a few letters out to schools aswell pal, as headteachers get together every now and again and have a chat about all sorts. Its the best way of getting your name round schools. Its how we do it with projects in the day job. You will soon get known in the schools if the head rated you, and from that you can generally get alot more coverage with parents.

It is round here... I find the best way to get the parents involved is to tell the children to go and get them. If you ask the parents to get up, nothing happens usually. Child pressure is a great thing.

I like having "dance-offs" to the party songs.

First play a couple for the kids - age dependant of course - then stop the music, give it the old "who's best, kids or adults?" spiel, then tell them no more music until there's at least half a dozen adults on the dancefloor, then hit 'em with YMCA or similar.

Then a kiddies one. Then another oldie (timewarp, oops etc.). You can usually go round the loop 3 or 4 times before declaring the kids the winners :beer1:

Always good to get the older bones moving.... ;)

A dance off is something else I do like you VV.

But I play one for the kids to show the grown ups how to dance nower days and then get the grown ups to dance to something like YMCA to show the kids how the mums and das used to dance in the olden days - Very Funny!!

your goalpost is quite easy to h ide cables (even if in a hurry) as it has the big knobs on each side of the top bar, so you can hook each cable onto it before it goes down to the floor parallel to the vertical pole

If you want a hand showing how to tidy up a bit, give me a shout. Ive plenty of ICE connectors and can show how to lengthen and tidy propery. Maybe even prewire it, which makes putting up and taking down so easy.

thanks, we dont tend to use magic tricks but we do use puppeteers etc or is that not good enough?

I do Kids parties and School Discos and everyone seems to enjoy them.

I do a School Disco for the same school about every 2 months, so I can't be doing to bad.

If you can do kids discos do them, like me you may prefer Dance music or whatever but at the end of the day, a Job is a job.
