Charity Events

Hi All,

I was booked for a Charity Event and the deposit was paid, but I have received an E-mail this morning informing me that they want to cancel as a Commercial Radio Station wants to do the event for Free.

It is a good cause, it's to support a Cancer fund, but I can't afford to do free events at the minute as I am an 18 year old student and I am also training to be a pilot.

EDIT: However, I did quote loads less than I usually do

So, I was wondering, do any of you do Charity gigs? If so what do you charge (if you charge) and has anything like this ever happened to you?

I was also asked, if I can refund the deposit, so it can be put back in to the funds, which I will probably do, being the kind hearted soul I am ;) :D

Think of all the punters that will be there....Is it worth doing a charity gig for nothing with the prospect of ALOT of business as a result of it?

I do a couple of charity gigs each year but only for charities of my own choosing. Anyone approaching me can pay normal rates.

As for the deposit, don't return it. Make a charitable donation for the same amount and give them permission to collect Gift Aid on it. You can also put this down on your books as a charity donation and make it partly tax-deductible. :cool:

I don't pay tax at the minute as SJS Discos has only just started it's second year as a business, so money from discos is still going towards paying off equipment.

Do it for free, businesses get alot of respect for doing charity events, go their equiped with loads of business cards, flyers, maybe pens, or even a nice slideshow on an lcd screen, these type of events are full of protenital custom.

OK, but you'll be registered as a business and therefore liable to submit tax returns right? Therefore you can submit a loss statement and carry this forward to future years when you'll be able to offset it.

Don't ever listen to the 'you will get loads of bookings from it' quote. As Daz has said every event has potential custom.

As far as charities go, I have 2 charities which I have chose to support and provide my services free of charge, although they always consult me with dates and generally choose midweek dates. Any other charities get charged full rate. You will get a lot trying to make you feel guilty so a lot depends on how you can deal with this. I don't feel any guilt as I actively support my 2 chosen charities.

Like Vectis said, claim your deposit back then donate it to the charity. That way they will get more and you know it will go back into the charity.

I had a good discussion with a fellow DJ last night about charity work and how a lot of people do it for free together with the pros and cons. If doing it for free you would still expect something back - the publicity the radio station get will no doubt be higher that what you would achieve so may work for them.

There are some good people out there and if you get in with them they will reward you for your efforts. There are also some pillocks who will exploit you so ask them all the right questions.

I did a fashion show for a pompous man. I spent all day working my :Censored: off and at the end they all went in to the hotel bar drinking. not one word of thanks or any offer to help me pack up (I HOUR PLUS) after 12 hours unpaid work. :Censored:

I did however do a local environmental centre open day. very nice. I had a letter of thanks and get invited to functions now. Met alan titschmarsh and david belamy. woo!

Just use your gut feeling and meet with them before, but definitely do some free gigs as what comes around goes around and all the most selfish people are miserable. :p

No I'm not, I do speak to him sometimes though. He's at Oxford Aviation Academy training to be an Airline Pilot.

I'm at a Tatenhill Avaition in Burton, training to be a private pilot. Hopefully I will be doing the same as Sam, as soon as I have passed my Private Pilot's Licence.

As Martin has already pointed out, you are a sole trader as opposed to PAYE, therefore you must submit a tax return.

As far as "paying off equipment" goes, you cannot offset the full price in year one on capital purchases, so take advice on this from an accountant.

Anyone wanting to write down 100% of up to £50k worth of new capital purchases this year really should be talking to an accountant.

Sadly it's not applied retrospectively, so anything on the asset register prior to the change continues to depreciate under the old rules. :o
