What is the price for good sound?

So...I have now got the sound system i'm happy with - Mackies and Gamma's.
They do what I want / need and am really happy with the sound quality.

I did use Warrior / Class D and it worked really well for my needs but have moved on.

During last nights gig a gentleman - well thats what I thought.....came up and complained that the music was to "Boom, Boom, Boom." and had given him a headache.

I do two sounds checks at every gig....low / high and hit the middle when we are going in full swing.
I don't push things and never had....take that as you feel.:)

I think it's one punter (who had a bad night)....sorry to use this term but as he lowered the standard I feel no problems in using that term for the way he spoke to me. Everyone else including the organiser had a good time....I've been told that they will be booking me next year.

The question is - How much is the cost for good sound?
One punter is unhappy....how many will he tell?

At gigs I've always noticed that Granny's take the seats nearest to the speakers. It's a fact of life!

I can only imagine how often I'm complained about next time they are at bingo or knitting meetings. :d

sound is personal,how many times do you find someone ask's you to turn it down and someone else ask's you to turn it up:bang: ,and those that hate the loud boom boom boom always sit by the speakers,there thats off my chest
what i find funny we can have a party for 200 people and get one comment like that,and that is what we remember most not the other 199 who have had a good night

I can't answer that.

What I can say is that the more I have upgraded my kit to better systems, the less complaints I get and more compliments about it 'not being too loud' and 'a nice sound'.

I agree daz, cheape systems do seem to be more boom boom, whereas more expensive systems are clearer and generate less compaints, imo.

If lots of people said that the sound was to "boom boom boom" then I would of done something about it but if it's for one person then sorry....tuff.

As for sound, you could go a bit ott and get horn loaded speakers with a narrow dispersion. Just position the speakers as you please. As for bass, well, just turn it down. lol.

Nice sound is where I'm coming from.....and not being ear bleeding!
The chap was sat mid-way to the right, not at the front. He also said he took out his hearing aid. Out of 135 people....that was the only complaint.

A bit of a generalisation but I now very rarely take subs out. As such never get complaints about being too loud or too quiet and in fact have picked up some good bookings for elder birthdays due to not having much boom boom. Saying that am out tonight with my new toy (2 mackie swa-1501), doing a rock night (my roadie having a go at moment), and the whole room is shaking - sounds brilliant and about 70 here enjoying it.

The Mackie 1501 is more of a harmonic bass and not a trouser flapping chest thumping bass, so you'll get a nicer sound and less complaints about 'boom boom'

Have quite a young hardened crowd tonight and must admit pushing the subs quite a bit (running with c300z tops) but the sound is crystal clear - but :Censored: loud. :D :D

Not going to wade into the great debate but prefering this setup over class-d, :sofa: even though still unsure about active.

i read the original post and thought maybe the customer was complaining about the music itself, not the sound? Ive had people complain im playing boom boom music, when they just dont like the newer music (or dont know it)

either way, this gentleman had a hearing aid, whether in or out, his hearing wasnt perfect and what was he really expecting?

Speakers ive had before... have been too toppy with not enough Mid range. this is where the RCF gear is fantastic they have a good balance of frequencies which is just right and not painful to the ear.

Ive never had anyone tell me to turn it down not since ive used RCF.

Some old people will complain but if they are sat right next to your speakers then what do they expect? It to be quiet. Its a mystery as to why they sit near a djs speakers.

I do check the sound levels by going out front and checking the volume i play at... and then adjust the volume accordingly.

Good point, Bouncy I was also thinking something similar.

When an older person complains that the music is too "boom boom boom" I think without talking to them, it's hard to know if they mean:

1) The type of music being played is too "boom boom boom" for their taste.

2) The sound system has too much bass in their opinion.

3) The music is simply too loud for their liking.

4) Any combination of the above.

We have no way of knowing which it was in this case.

had a woman sitting directly in front of one of my bose L1's on sat night and she had no bother talking to the people next to her,went to the back of the room and the sound was still loud enough and crystal clear,could never have done that with the hk's.

I think this is more correct on reflection.:)

I think the gentleman in question may have also thought that as it was a Ball that it may have well been more "lovey dovey" than a disco.

You could spend £10,000 on a sound system and the 2 or 3 whiney :Censored: would still have a dig. Its easy to think too hard about why a certain person complains about something whatever it is, due to the fact we want to offer the best service possible. But 9/10 the :Censored: moaning does the same thing wherever they go.

Laazats dont count :p because they are the venue from H*ll when it comes to the volume. they dont like anything above background level in that place. As soon as it goes above background level they will kick off.

or they might just install a nice sound limiter for you to plug into.
