iPod Discos - Anyone Provided Kit For Hire?

Out of interest has anyone here supplied a PA (with or without lighting) to a client who wanted to have an "iPod Disco"?

If so...

1. How much did you charge?
2. Did you set it up and break it down?
3. Did you provide a microphone?
4. What kind of deposit did you take?
5. What did you do about insurance (i.e. PLI)?

Any feedback gratefully received. :)

4. Approx 25%, but it is easier now I have a card machine

use a ampilifer with far less power than the speaker, or use a mixer in an lockable flightcase with a wire coming out for the ipod.

To be honest, I have only been hiring very small systems for background music, not really as a 'disco' system as such and I have a blanket policy for hire.

1: i charged £95 locally - only did a few though I think over £150 is a bit steep for two speakers as your not really doing much other than setting them up. Maybe OK near London?
2: yes - only took 5 mins with active sppeakers and two lights

5: Covered if on premises, but i went down the pub.

good business if you get different insurance and you back yourself up with paper work. get a cleared deposit and passport or something. that will ake the party person really paranoid about the equipment.

If your leaving your gear put a great big table between your speakers and the crowd.

also lock your equipments volume if poss.

- easy work - especially if you get 3-4 on the same night in close proximity.

- get speakers that have lighting brackets on top and charge extra for lighting. All you need is a couple of impossileds or something light. I use Gemini GX 450's as i can screw the light straight in.

- do not supply mic for younger parties as they will be mcing down it all night. ok for 30th upwards.

I've supplied a few but I send out my full "Junior" rig (minus playout) complete with my roadie as 'sound tech'.

T's & C's clearly state hirer operates only the source device, sound tech will handle volume, lighting etc..

Plenty of disclaimers about correct licensing for source material being responsibility of hirer, hirer being 18+, no drinks near the gear etc.. Set them up on a small table adjacent to the rig so they don't actually need to come behind and/or touch, keeps the PLI simple.

Quite successful evenings actually. I charge more than I normally would for the same rig + DJ.

There are a couple of hire firms locally sending out "Complete Disco" packages for around £50-75 per night and I'm deliberately not trying to compete with those. So for £200-250 you get a pretty decent rig.

Whilst I can see the 'easy money' side of this service, I can't help thinking its a bit of a downer for us DJ's.

So the client gets to hear their music choice, and the Ipod doesn't run the risk of doing something 'Silly' (unless instructed by its owner). And, I know that the Ipod will never replace the DJ.

But sometimes... It would seem that the the IPOD undermines the DJ who has to go yet another step further to prove that he/she is the best choice for music on an evening.

Like yourDJ pointed out, the work is great as you could do a number of gigs per evening.

In the longer term I think DIY Discos will do good DJs a lot of favours because an iPod cannot compete with a good DJ.

An iPod is an infinitely better solution than a cowboy and/or rubbish DJ who does our general reputation no favours.

Talking of £175, someone else on another forum informs me that he offers a basic set up for hire for that figure with the client having to pick up and return the kit.

This service is very popular in his locality, which is Hull, where others tell me you can't charge more as a DJ than £120 - £150 for a Wedding as no one will pay it.

Not sure what that says about DJs in Hull really... :p
